I was in Oahu, Hawaii in 1988 on a 6 week surfing holiday at the time and was planning on flying to Hilo on the Big Island. I could've been on that plane. However, rather than fly that week I decided to stay on the North Shore Oahu for another week as I was enjoying the surfing too much. A couple of days later a Hawaiian surfer I knew was making jokes about 'flying a convertible airplane'. It's like playing russian roulette.

an't knock Boeing for this one - maintenance pure & simple. But if I had to pick the one commercial aircraft that I had to experience a major malfunction in and hope to survive, it would be the Lockheed L1011. Even with all her quirks, she was one tough bird.

I dont know if you guys saw "crashes that changed flying" but it actually wasnt an explosion...the riveting system on the outer shell werent repaired properly.Basically one little crack had too much and once it caught resistance from the wind it just peeled that whole section away. Rest assured they corrected this problem with a tool that can sense cracks without taking the plane apart..now required by law to use these for inspecting the riveting system. This never happened again!!

@peaceout707 ANY airplane will eventually break down with poor maintenance - even an Airbus. Blame it on Aloha Airlines for not repairing their birds properly. The fact that the plane even held together with its upper half ripped off is proof of why you should ALWAYS pick Boeing - they're made to last and bring you safely onto the ground.

@DrStrangebomb1993 You are right. I flew many times with Boeing! No problems ever! Only a slight delay because of the airline. I flew 2 times with an Airbus. From Germany to Egypt and back. Before the flight the captain said there is a problem on Engine 2, something with reverse thrust engage. As we left the airbus again and had a 2 1/2 hours delay, I thought, Boeing is the best!
