@secretgecko... You are clearly correct. Nothing should/can be placed upon the flag. In a situation like this,a small table should be placed to the side of the casket and all items should be placed upon it.
Was there also a military funeral ceremony? I noticed the U. S. Flag draped on the coffin. Military ettiqette states that NOTHING should be draped on top of the flag - draping the Masonic Apron over the U.S. Flag is akin to flying a Masonic Flag higher on a flagpole than a U.S. Flag! Out of respect - It is just NOT done.
That is why the Masonic Funeral Services should always be preformed prior to any military services so that the Flag is the last thing draped over the coffin.
@secretgecko As a funeral director, I have to agree with you. Most fraternal rites are held the night before or anytime prior to the hour of service. The flag should be the last and only thing draped over the casket.
Im not sure where you get that information. Im afraid you dont understand what a 33rd degree Mason is or how it differs and does not differ from a 3rd Degree Master Mason. There is no degree higher than that of a 3rd Degree Master Mason.
@scoopandrachel ...... how do they say; You come in as master mason and you go out as a master mason. There are ceremonies for many degrees but none as popular as the third degree;
@yancyman every mason is raised to the third degree , all other degrees are called "SIDE" degrees . nothing is higher than a third degree mason no matter what he joins afterwards.
@cjzzzzz.

Do you have a video of the Eastern Star Burial Ceremony? It's a beautiful service that people should witness.
