The problem with Kozlov was that he never used his sambo ability asd a part of his wrestling style (plus Santino actually had a manager, something which could have REALLY helped Kozlov). Watch Kozlov's match in IGF (Inoki Genome) and you'll see REAL wrestling
WWE needs to give Santino an amnesia gimmick like TNA gave EY. Santino acts like this and it leads to his tag team partner Kozlov being confused as hell.
santino says it himself that he wants to be funny as well as kick ass like he can. he could be the whole package. he even says since him and randy orton are good friends there is actually a chance of that happening. i hope so cuz if you look closely hes slowly using his skill in the ring.

Imagine that, a member of one of Mexico's greatest wrestling families reduced to wearing a turkey costume and dancing a jig with "Mean Gene" Okerlund at a WWF PPV.

Santino is, unfortunately, going to turn out to be a lot like Terry Taylor (the "Red Rooster") in that his comic relief gimmick will overrule anything he did in the past and make it impossible for him to get over anywhere else with any other gimmick. Taylor was a star for Bill Watts' UWF promotion in the early '80s, then he came to WWF, they gave him the "Red Rooster" gimmick and it all went down the shitter. His career was virtually through after that.
@elc1960 yep. That wallstreet Terrence Taylor stuff in WCW didn't really do much to rejuvenate him either. It kind of sucks for a quality wrestler. Its like the urkel effect, once you are typecast as the comedy wrestler its hard to shake. But on the bright side, Santino is still employeed and making good money. This MMA type gimmick might not have gotten over. Look at Terkay and Kozlov. Marella is better but the fans decide ultimately
@bkstyle82 It also didn't help that they broke Santino in on TV the way they did - beating Umaga with help form Bobby Lashley and all that. It made him look weak and his Boris Alexiev character was anything but. What hurt Koslov and Terkay was that they had no personality - just big destruction machines. After mowing down everybody Koslov was demoted to the midcard. Terkay was viewed as nothing but Elijah Burke's henchman and was never given any kind of a push beyond that.
@elc1960 Thats true. In hindsight, I would have preferred to see this gimmick since I kind of like the MMA style wrestlers(Taz ofcourse in old ECW, Shamrock-an actual MMA guy in the WWE). But at the same time I am happy that Santino essentially can collect a check with minimal wear and tear on his body. Lol. He's getting paid without really bumping and taking a beating.

Taylor was a star for Bill Watts' UWF promotion in the early '80s, then he came to WWF, they gave him the "Red Rooster" gimmick and it all went down the shitter. His career was virtually through after that.

@elc1960 yep. That wallstreet Terrence Taylor stuff in WCW didn't really do much to rejuvenate him either. It kind of sucks for a quality wrestler. Its like the urkel effect, once you are typecast as the comedy wrestler its hard to shake. But on the bright side, Santino is still employeed and making good money. This MMA type gimmick might not have gotten over. Look at Terkay and Kozlov. Marella is better but the fans decide ultimately

@bkstyle82 It also didn't help that they broke Santino in on TV the way they did - beating Umaga with help form Bobby Lashley and all that. It made him look weak and his Boris Alexiev character was anything but. What hurt Koslov and Terkay was that they had no personality - just big destruction machines. After mowing down everybody Koslov was demoted to the midcard. Terkay was viewed as nothing but Elijah Burke's henchman and was never given any kind of a push beyond that.

@elc1960 Thats true. In hindsight, I would have preferred to see this gimmick since I kind of like the MMA style wrestlers(Taz ofcourse in old ECW, Shamrock-an actual MMA guy in the WWE). But at the same time I am happy that Santino essentially can collect a check with minimal wear and tear on his body. Lol. He's getting paid without really bumping and taking a beating.

The reason of why Santino become a jobber after a great push that he receive, it was because in Italia the WWE tv programs was cancelled. Vince it's really resentful ............... and there you have the reason of "Santina Marella" and Santino Marella an excellent jobber to the actual WWE. =/

the thing i'm disappointed about is that they don't even use his true potential, like he is really really good and not a lot of people know that. i love his comedy, he's as funny as he is a damn good grappler. they could use both. sorta like the old festus gimmick, big doofus until the bell rings and he goes crazy. they outta do that with santino. maybe they should have him trip fall and hit his head. sorta like when goldust was electricuted and developed tourettes, instead santino develops skil

This is true and a shame. He started off great though when he was the IC Champ. He's still great on the mic though, but they make job to too many stars. When he fact, he should be a star!

Err. Santino is one of the best on the mic, but Jericho has him beat, and yes... Like him or not, Cena is better ON THE MIC as well. In the ring? No, but whether you like the man or not he can work the stick.

Jericho? Probably so, I'll give you that. Honestly Jericho is likely the best overall guy they have right now. But Cena? He can be very funny on the mic, but generally ruins it with his SUPER SERIOUS BUSINESS routine.
But, I'll admit Santino hasn't quite been as good lately. But this could be because he's been reduced to 30 seconds of talking to the guest hosts.
I still think a repackage of Santino as a goofy face who -when pissed- becomes a technical machine would be amazing.
