Responding to the comment "older musicians expressing disdain for Charles Lloyd," I wonder who they are - I have heard Ornette, Herbie, Elvin, Jim Hall, McCoy ( all of whom have played with Lloyd ) express high praise for him and his music. To quote Elvin Jones from a 2002 press conference in San Sebastian Spain, ' Charles Lloyd is one of the greatest saxophonists today. Thank God he is still here." If Elvin didn't know what he was talking about, then we are all in trouble.
Jason Moran is freaking brilliant. I saw him at Birdland back in January, and needless to say, it was one of the greatest sets I've ever heard in my life.
Got to talk with him after, too, which was even greater.
that's strange to think of him playing with Charles Lloyd-- then again, I was surprised to hear Geri Allen was playing with him. I've read interviews of some older musicians expressing disdain of Charles Lloyd-- as just channeling Coltrane, not really saying anything of his own.
I have heard the same views expressed by older musicians, some of whom played with Charles. Apparently he is a more business-minded person than a music-minded one.........it takes all kinds I guess
i like some of jason's stuff but this just sounds like total clutter until it gets to around 1:30, at which point it goes into something kind of cutesy, those kind of tunes I'm not feeling so much. Dug his first record on Blue Note and "Facing Left". Maybe this was a suite form and the free jazz part was at the tail of end of something, I don't know...
problem is the constraint on total time for YT - until someone shows me how to get round as some people seem able to it limits what i can record and then put up here - he is touring with Charles Lloyd soon which should be great
