I dont care that Canada won the gold...that was their moment. But nothing comes close to the Americans beating the USSR. That was the greatest moment in sports history...It was an impossible game to win. I mean the soviets crushed the NHL all stars. And a bunch of college kids who had NEVER played with each other before beat them? Just think about it...it really was miraculous. And it represents what our great nation is all about.
@gmenfan48 Actually Canada could not use NHL players until 1995, but yea its true this is the greatest sports moment of any sport. Of course as a canadian i gotta root for team Canada no matter what but this moment was and is still great and proud to be usa's neighbour.
@deathontwolegs1961 Well yeah the NHL is a mix of canadians and americans with Canadians holding a slight edge...but it is their sport I will give them that. Id say only the northern half of the US is interested in Hockey. The southern half barely even has ice to skate on!
@deathontwolegs1961 but while Hockey is by far most popular in the Great Lakes region of the US and gets the majority of NHL players from there, during the olympics EVERYONE watches sports they dont follow.
Lol... I'm loving some of these comments. Red sox over the Yankees was bigger? Really? Are you on pills? US sports wise this was the biggest moment in sports history hands down. Ask anyone with a brain. World wide, who knows?... but I'd live to hear of one bigger. And Lake Placid is an amazing town on top of all of it! : )
@MrSaberq well its true man. no one cant deny that. if your not american you wouldnt know. we make the world go around. when things are good here, the other countries dont to good to. thats how much other nations rely on us. i am proud of being an american
@MrRogermaris What the fuck does that mean proud to be an American.......My father is an American and my mom is German so I kinda get your point but proud????......Be happy dont be proud...Another thing you are so full of it my friend....America is not the center of the universe....Dont get me wrong I adore America I think it is the greatest country in the world but not for the same reasons you think.......Like this movie for example...Great movie but greatest moment in sports history?????
@MrSaberq proud: feeling self-respect or pleasure in something by which you measure your self-worth; or being a reason for pride. It means the same in this context as it does in the context of "proud parent". Not a difficult concept. Yes it is the greatest moment in sports history from the American perspective. If you don't think so, your country can make a movie about what they believe is the greatest moment in sports history.
@MrSaberq Thats not what I said. Don't incorrectly paraphrase me. I said from an American perspective this is the greatest moment in sports history. I meant that. I didn't say in American history. I said in sports history, meaning all of it, the world over. This isn't a difficult concept. I will not trust you man because you haven't offered up what you believe the greatest moment in sports history.
@Brett9897 Honestly this comes pretty close.....The greatest moment in sports history in my mind is Red Sox's 0-3 comeback in 2004 ALCS against the Yankees.......
@MrSaberq How does a team that has the 2nd highest payroll coming back down 0-3, something that has been done several times in many other sports compare to a bunch of unpaid kids beating some of the best adults in the world at the sport?
@Brett9897 Actually it was never done before in MLB.........Never and against the Yankees..........This is cool but not the greatest....Also hockey sucks........
@MrSaberq how can you not like hockey? its fast, theirs hits, fights and its all skill. not to mention the stanley cup is the oldest and hardest trophy to win. Best sport in the world
@MrSaberq you are an idiot.....I hope you fucking kidding....this wasn't just a hockey game, this was in the heat of the Cold War. Two rival countries. A team of college kids beating a team of the best hockey team in the world. Yankees vs. red sox doesn't even hold a damn candle. Do yourself a favor and pick up a history book and watch the movie.....you mentioned payroll...these kids didn't get paid....it meant more than money.....i really hope you were joking. Don't really be this retarded.
@daveTHEcougar1 First of all an American telling someone to take a history book is SOMETHING.....Second MLB,NBA,NHL,NFL are not the only sports where we need to look for inspiration for greatest moment in sports history....There is one more sport you know like the most popular FOOTBALL which has probably the greatest sport moment in it somewhere....I told you what I think is my greatest moment for me a huge Red Sox fan.......
@MrSaberq wow just reading that reply made me question my sanity. You contradicted yourself and apparently don't understand that this was the biggest moment in American sports. Just like Al Michaels mentioned in the movie, people who didn't know anything about hockey was at the game and involved in the moment. It was a major statement to beat this Soviet team. Develop an actual argument before you respond and sound dumb. East coast people constantly prove their arrogance/stupidity.Just think man
the only reason why the soviets where so good is because the canadaians did not have there best players to play in the winter games thats why they won if the canadains had there best players would win the games every time
@RyRy9109 Didn't they beat your best players when they beat the NHL All-Star team? Granted Canada did beat them in other world hockey competitions they just hadn't at the Olympics in a while.
The game wasn't televised live, I can remember listening for updates on the radio.; everyone went crazy when the final score was announced. A bunch of college kids beat the mighty Soviets because they worked their a****s off. That work ethic isn't practiced nor is it recognized in this country anymore.
wrong name it was no miracle. they beat an great team but so typical american movie yes they playd 2-2 against sweden but sweden is a land whit 9 million peoples and we have done alot more for the world then the us
@xlHawkeyelx yeah thats awesome and i dont hate america i hate the people that makes usa look stupid and i dont like this movie and thank you you are the first person to no write fag in the end :)
You're entitled to your opinion, but saying that Sweden has done more for the world than the United States of America isn't even an opinion...it's just stupidity. There's a reason that the United States is the most powerful nation on earth, so pay the Stars and Stripes some respect, cause without it Sweden, along with the rest of the free world, wouldn't be around anymore.
made me cry, honestly. the only things that make me cry are funerals of people i actually know, truly inspiring american moments in history usually done through film, and onions from hell.
this is a truly inspiring american moment in history
it must frost Canadian's asses that the greatest moment in hockey history can never be topped....it's not possible, unless Uganda enters a team that plays without skates, and can win a gold! LMFAO
@thug4christ21 i saw this movie in the theaters also and i can say its the only sport movie ive ever seen where the crowd in the theater was cheering like it was a real hockey game
im 26 yrs old and i wasnt alive when this game was played i only know it through watching the tape of the game and through stories my grandpa told me about it and through playing hockey of course i dont think theres a hockey player who doesnt know this story to this day i cant watch this movie without tearing up USA HOCKEY!!!!
@azkodagama Aside from the fact they used PROFESSIONAL players against collegiate players (Therefore basically had a built in advantage), the Soviet Union broke up and died. I guess THAT'S what counts the most.
This is not 'the greatest moment in sport history'. ANYTIME someone, or a team, digs deep and finds 'the game behind the game', the game that can never be won - or lost - THAT is another 'greatest moment' in sport, regardless of the outcome.
I remember being six when this happened in real life.Being from the US South hockey to us was like a sport from another world. We had no idea what the rules were or what icing was or any like that. But I can recall my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all getting togther and cheering the US team on.
@MVGplusplus because this moment united a dividend nation. This was the best team in the world playing against a bunch of college kids and we did the impossible. If you lived during this time you would of realized this was a miracle.
@MVGplusplus This was in 1980. Since no professional players wanted to get injured, the Olympic American team were just a bunch of rookies. On the other hand, the Soviets pulled out their top dogs. The Soviets won every gold medal since 1964. When the US won, they didn't just win, they showed the Soviet Union who's boss.
I cant believe i havent seen this. ive seen the rocket, mighty ducks, slapshot, youngblood and even the tooth fairy ( horible movie btw), but i have not seen the greatest hockey movie of all time......what the fucks wrong with me.
@rachelx1129 It's hard to top The Rocket and Slapshot! I only seen Slapshot for the first time this past month and let me tell you, it is hil-fuckin-larious and The Rocket just amazed and wowed me from end to finish, I've seen it 6 times. I'll deffinately watch Miracle one day and then we'll see what the greatest sports movie is! Mine is The Rocket, for sure!
@MVGplusplus Because it's called hollywood marketing, if you took everything they said in the trailer so seriously as the real deal, I think you should get your brain checked. Get over it. It's not the end of the world. The team of scrappy college kids won over the best hockey team in the world, that is a BIG deal whether you want to believe it or not.

Hey as long as you win the one that counts the most. You can win a ton of games, but if you don't man up in the clutch then it means nothing.
Just ask the 2007 New England Patriots about that.

@redwingsmike3718 it doesnt really count the "most" when the Russians have ten times more wins in stored and Americans ... just one :P
azkodagama 1 year ago

For that olympics it did you jackass. The whole point I was making is at the time of that game what the Soviets did before that didn't matter.
Sports is about what happens in the present not about how many wins you racked up in the past.
Just like it didn't matter that the Pats won a ton more games than the Giants in 07. They didn't win the one that counted the most.

I'm so proud to be an American and this movie makes me even prouder!!!!
We need a moment like this now, something to unite us

This is not 'the greatest moment in sport history'. ANYTIME someone, or a team, digs deep and finds 'the game behind the game', the game that can never be won - or lost - THAT is another 'greatest moment' in sport, regardless of the outcome.

It doesn't matter what happens to the US hockey team in any other Olympics. Absolutely nothing can take away from this moment in American History.

@baboonbob69 lol miracle is a great movie. best sports one in my opinion. definitely watch it!
rachelx1129 1 year ago
@rachelx1129 It's hard to top The Rocket and Slapshot! I only seen Slapshot for the first time this past month and let me tell you, it is hil-fuckin-larious and The Rocket just amazed and wowed me from end to finish, I've seen it 6 times. I'll deffinately watch Miracle one day and then we'll see what the greatest sports movie is! Mine is The Rocket, for sure!
baboonbob69 1 year ago
@baboonbob69 yeah i need to watch slapshot. i've never seen rocket either. hockey is the best!
rachelx1129 1 year ago
@MVGplusplus Because it's called hollywood marketing, if you took everything they said in the trailer so seriously as the real deal, I think you should get your brain checked. Get over it. It's not the end of the world. The team of scrappy college kids won over the best hockey team in the world, that is a BIG deal whether you want to believe it or not.
