Luciano tells of the time he and his father went to hear him in Cavalleria when Gigli was 56 (?) and after the opera, Gigli sang 17 more songs. This guy for the epitiome of Bel Canto tenor. Mateo Batistini Bel Canto baritone.
An admirable attack of this aria even though Gigli still can't seem to shake his old habit of sliding around the notes for effect. I would prefer a little more baritonal chops in those explosive sections when he rails at Nedda, but Gigli never had this quality in his voice.
HIs heart is bursting, and so is mine listening to it! It's so good there's not really any words for it. (fainting)
Caruso and Gigli OWN this opera. DiStefano and Bjoerling were fine singers, but nowhere near Gigli. I'm sure they would have told you that themselves. Gigli wouldn't have said they were greater than him, because they WEREN'T!
This passage is "No, Pagliaccio non son". It's Canio's other big scene. He sounds A LOT like Richard Tucker (or vice-versa). I know it may be an insult to Gigli, but it's still true. OK, let's say that this is probably what Tucker was aspiring to. Gigli did not look like his head is going to explode.
Grande Gigli!!

I wonder whether this is from the film I pagliacci (1943) with Alida Valli. Great Gigli had done many films.

Beniamino Gigli is a legend of the opera. His voice is unique. Thanks for posting.
BTW the title is wrong.

Anyone else think that the director of the orchestra at 1:56 looks like Rob Schnider?

Ridi Pagliaccio is the name of the film from which this except was taken. It is not the name of the except, which is "No! pagliaccio non son."
BelCantoSociety 4 years ago 6
@BelCantoSociety
You probably mean the film "I pagliacci" (1943), directed by Giuseppe Fatigati, with Beniamino Gigli, Alida Valli, Paul Hörbiger and others.

It isn´t aria from 1. act Ridi Pagliaccio,
but aria from the end of opera"no, pagliaccio
io non so". Gigli is perfect.

Carusos wife(!) said to Jussi Bjorling:
"Wear Enricos crown"!
She considered him the best tenor since Caruso passed away.
Many other opera connisseurs think the same:
Jussi Bjorling is really the greatest tenor of our time!
I agree!
maxhansendk 4 years ago
I agree with "maxhansendk", but I like Gigli very much too.
The story is true!
