@JackDaScarecrow because gero created them slightly differently. In trunk's timeline, he had woken them up once before, but they didn't follow orders so he made them into killing machines so they would not defy him, but they killed him.

In our timeline he didn't wake them up so he found no need to extra modify them, and they kept their free will to not want to kill. They only killed him because he ruined their lives by taking away their memories and turning them into androids

In the present timeline, Goku survived the virus due to Future Trunks giving him antidotes so Trunks, Vegeta, Picoolo, and Tien were spared because the androids' mission was to destroy Goku and others were irrelevent.

Most notably the fact that it was only 18 doing the final attack against Trunks (Gohan took a combo attack from both androids), and the fact that they don't seem to take him nearly as seriously as they did Gohan, and likely didn't put nearly as much power into it.

After all, look at how they act. With Gohan, they both flat out go for the kill. With Trunks, they sit there mocking him and even banter about who gets to finish the job.
