Well the only sensible and relevant interpretation of that poem to the song is:

Knowing a past love is with someone else, running; being the defining metaphor for love and a relationship. leaving the author behind as they run together like foxes.

The author knows that his love is with someone else in the moonlight, and it saddens him,

As the author has no one to run with besides the crickets on the ground, (That is, no one to love)

The thought of it all makes him sick
