i is confused; TV commercials? did people get paid wages in the USSR? (-isn't that capitalism?). how did they acquire goods... ...some sort of voucher system....?
After working to meet production goals for the year in your crappy job in a Soviet owned factory, you get the car. You get the engine when you achieve next years production goals. Let's not talk about the tires.
@depeche609 man, the 96 civic is even crappier, like ladas are famous in Ralliart racing in the early 70's all the way to the early 2000s, no civic even comes CLOSE!!!
Especially for people born after 1990. This car LADA is as tough as nails. Probably tougher than the general public Hummer H3. Ladas are still on the road. You can repair it yourself with a screwdriver and a few basic tools. It was also one of the favorite cars of the Russian/post Soviet criminal world members. The trunk is very convenient to hide ammunition, store firearms and transport people who owe money.
this car is fucking ugly,no matter how much you tune it,repaint it,its ugly, but one thing is sure, its tough, breaks down rarely (if maintained properly)and will last you a lifetime :)
Now I like lada's :D a car with actual protection you crash you get nothing you go off-road your car is still operational....I Like like lada :D! specially Samara
@andymax760 I second your opinion of this ad. The Russians just don't know how to advertise a product. Advertising and imaging psychology just isn't in their blood.
They should either do a parody of old Soviet images or do an overblown Stalinist endorsement of their Lada. This attempt to be cute and clever fails big time.
@InfiniteMushroom Hell, they couldn't even make good propaganda. Useless slogans, pictures of pissed off peasants and workers, what a farce. You can't build a society on hate and anger.
@soco13466 Somehow you overlooked the key word in my comment... PARODY. The very stridency of old Soviet propaganda makes it golden for clever ad writers and political satire.
@negativ9009 I believe I already pointed that out, stupid. I also pointed out that the quality of the parody was very poor..., in so many words. My original comments to that end are perfectly clear.
@negativ9009 I am amazed at the sophomoric quality of your retort. The very goal of a commercial is to persuade the VIEWER to buy the product. That makes MY OPINION of the ad more important than its production!
There are times when criticism is unwarranted but, in advertising, it is always fair game.
@InfiniteMushroom The purpose of this one is to remind the viewer about the car since comercial was made like 10 years after this car first got into production. So it doesn’t need to be like “in your face new car is out come and get it!” and excuse me involve stalin endorsement or some “soviet flashbacks” to get the viewer pissted and angry or sarcastic. It’s early 90’s you don’t know their mentality. So seeing an ensign or a cop own a lada or a car in general is encouraging for that period
@negativ9009 Now I understand your viewpoint. Well said. Edgy parodies of Stalinist images would make a great SNL bit for selling Ladas but would probably fail for somebody in Russia who has different memories of those times.
it is very funny 'cause Ladas were once very popular in Egypt as well, you can still find them now, yet the people driving them are nearly always 60 + years old !!! XD
In a country where majority of males would do virtually anything to avoid ending up as privates in the army, it seems strange to associate the military system with a product in order to boost its sales
what the fuck is in the water over there? you guys could make a lot of money bottling and selling it to countries like mine which unfortunately has no psychedelic contaminants in the drinking water.
@borisrivas2929 How do you explain the collapse of the former Communist Russia? GOD BLESS AMERICA! This looks like a commericial Obama would approve of!
Finland was full of Ladas in the 1970's because all there was to import was oil and Ladas. And zinc buckets.
The idea of commercial advertising for cars in a Soviet context is laughable! They needed absolutely no ads to sell cos ppl were happy for the privilege to buy one in the first place. The number of private cars was very low during most of the communist times. A PERMIT to buy a car was used as a reward by the state!
@ssmusic214 yes, and in Bulgaria, one of the former countries of the eastern bloc, the waiting period was around 18-20 years. When a couple had a child, it put the money in a trust fund and by the time that child was old enough to have a driver's license, the car was ready to be picked up.That's how my uncle had his first LADA.
@ssmusic214 Which is why (if you were a Muscovite) you went down to that skeezy car lot next to the Arbat (you know, the one run by Chechens) and bought a used Lada or Moskovitch. All towns in the USSR had places where, on the weekends, people sold used, usually beat-to-shit, cars.
@ssmusic214 By "used car lot" I meant the parking lot where private citizens privately sold their private rustbuckets to any sucker with cash. Is it a used car lot? No, if you go by American standards, but cars were sold there informally.
@MrJohndoakes I never owned car in USSR, but few relatives and people I knew did. From what I know, you didn't need any car lot to sell ANY car. Any rustbucket you want to sell would fly away instantly at premium price.
And owning and maintaining a car in USSR was horrific nightmare!
@ssmusic214 My understanding is that there was a Soviet black market in things like carpentry, dentistry, electrical repair, and automotive work - as long as you had contacts and were in a city. Out in the sticks I don't know. What I do know is that Soviet designers tried to make the cars simple enough so that anybody with some mechanical knowledge could fix them, though parts were hard to find (a black market in themselves.)
@MrJohndoakes 1974 My friend giving me a ride in his Lada from Yalta to Simferopol Airport over Angorsky mountain pass in Crimean mountains going slower than everybody. When I commented on his careful driving, he explained : "My brake pads are completely worn out and I can not find new ones even on black market". I was going 26 Km DOWNHILL ON THE MOUNTAIN ROAD in a car with NO BRAKES. (Lots of places on that road where looking over the shoulder you CAN NOT SEE THE BOTTOM OF THE CLIFF).
at the end were the lights supposed to flash or was it the dodgy electricals :D but no ladas are the best economy cars ever its real driving none of that traction control crap
