but why call it children of men!!! its women that have the babies, im very intelligent but i never understood the title! and i love this film by the way, but the title annoys me greatly. i just think that men need to get over their self importance, we both need each other.
@kayzi17 Native speaker here: men refers to mankind (humans). Children of Men as in children of the adults, it brings attention to the generational gap between children and their parents and is an eloquent way of saying 'children of humans' which doesn't sound as eloquent.
there is one particular scene in this movie with camera work that is extremely impressive. the one long shot where clive is running in his flip flops through the refugee camps in the midst of a battle. sooo awesome
ha-ha the greatest, your joking right? Better then LOTR's Trilogy? is it better then Citizen Kane? or Metropolis? or maybe Ben-Hur or even Lawrence of Arabia. This is a modern movie with hand-held stuff. good movie but not the greatest.
@directorlog LoTR was very entertaining, but I don't remember any stand-out camera work. It was pretty standard stuff in that department. The final action sequence in CoM is a continuous un-cut twenty minute shot. Think about that. Think about choreographing all that. With no computer work. @Hendar23 LOTR had outstanding cinematography. Where Smeagle and Gollum battle it out and the camera angle changes left to right between them, the climactic battle in The Two Towers, the close ups on the ring which provides the sense of how powerful it is, the powerful shot of our heroes walking over the hill which symbolizes bravery, the close up on Frodo as he loses himself to the ring in ROTK and much more.
@ManofTinProductions I'm sorry, but every example you just gave you would be taught in any cinema school. It's very effect, and very standard. It's done well, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't really stand out.
@Hendar23 none of the long shots in CoM are what they seem. The seemingly uncut shots are computer splices. Extremely well done to give the illusion of continuous shooting, but they are CG spliced.
@Hendar23 I can name hundreds of camera techniques in LOTR'S - False perspective, Scale photography, miniature photography,4 months of night shots at helms deep, VFX photography, go's on and on.
@ManofTinProductions all the seemingly "uncut" shots in CoM are just computer splices. I freakin love CoM, one of my all time favourites, but once i figured out that none of the extremely long shots are in one go it lost some of its magic. They're extremely well done, but still.
It DOES look like a great movie but it can't have better camera work than SUCKERPUNCH! Some truly amazing shots in that one and all kinds of kewl spiffy action and hot babes in skimpy outfits with big guns and big ass swords beating the crap out of everyone. WOWEE!
oh please... this is not the best camera work in movie history. you'd be surprised (hopefully) that before the advent of chroma key (green screen) & vfx & steadicam & simple traditional interior 360 car shots what Directors were doing with huge sets and cranes. this is nothing but ease compared to the 50's. Ben Hur's race scene alone is probably in the top 5. also watch Citizen Kane. saying its the best camera work ever is an overstatement
@2legit2quitz the director refused to use CGI in the single shot sequences to keep its origionality, credit where credit is due the storyline however is excellent and far outweighs any camerawork.
Oh wow, I just saw this movie again recently. It is pretty fantastic, and now that I think about it, the camera work was really cool. I like long, uninterrupted shots. I don't think this trailer does the movie justice though..
This film really does have some of the best cinematography ive ever seen. The shot inside the car when the people attack and you know who gets shot. (dont wanna spoil it) thats done in all one take. from inside the car, the cinematography in this film is what makes it so gripping and realistic to watch.
@MysterEy1 it was beautiful, the way everyone silenced and led then thru the war zone, protecting the child and mother... Once again, goosebumps. I can keep watching this over and over. Beautiful.
And as full metal jacket and clockwork orange being great camera work, I just dont even see how you can even compare those to the amazing, realist artful work of this film. Clockwork orange? Good movie, but not any amazing camara skill, I dont see it.
@MysterEy1 it was beautiful, the way everyone silenced and led then thru the war zone, protecting the child and mother... Once again, goosebumps. I can keep watching this over and over. Beautiful.

The entire scene where he goes into the building to get the baby which seems about ten minutes of uncut camera work and action everywhere is the best in the film! I like the bus ride too tho!
@munee3000 totally. I love when they are walking to the boat. No communication barriers, everyone coming together to protect the child. Just a beautiful moment. I love this movie. True art. 100%
@munee3000 Amazing. No communication barriers, even tho everyone was speaking diff languages, everyone shielding the child from the war going on. Then the gunmen kneeling and crossing themselves. Amazing. Arty in its true form. Beautiful. 100%
This film had an interesting premise prior to viewing but the execution was really bad. I dont really care if the camera work was technically good because the general direction didn't work. Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine are really strong actors so this is inexcusable. The film looked like a BBC sci-fi drama series; not a £40million movie.
Such a great film. And the car camera work was amazing. Julianne Moore's death affected me more than anything in A Serbian Film. That's how well made this film is.

@TheFilmMaster I believe just how many things are going on at once. I don't see it as so much the camera as the actors and director (and, of course, the cameramen) pulling off some amazing, complex, and long scenes.
@FienStudios @Neverjustforvever I don't claim to be a fertility expert but I know that either way, the zygote, embryo, whatever has to eventually be inseminated into a woman's womb. If the infertility is based on just women not being able to incubate cells, then it wouldn't matter what technique is used to start the zygote, it wouldn't take and would die off.
@xjxm you are right. The basis was on the fact that women had become barren, in which case, even the 31st tube babies couldn't become implanted into a host mother.
Its films like these that make me pleased to know that England still make great movies, and that America hasn't taken over the film industry by making high action films. (Not to say that America does have a HUGE amount of fantastic movies)
@FienStudios This is a Universal Pictures film... As in an American film not English.. awkward.. America hasn't 'taken over' the film industry it always controlled the film industry. Wake up.
@FienStudios You failed to observe the main reason for my comment.. you said "films like these that make me pleased to know England still make great movies" Which doesn't make sense as this film is an American film... Take it or leave it dude, long live the Queen.
@landonbrown6 Its an American/ Mexican/ UK film, the actors are English, its set in England and Filmed in England and the book is English, while the directors and writers are English and Mexican and the Cinematographer is Mexican, so is the Film Editor, but the other editor is French, the studios are English and American, and is produced by English and Americans. So the first comment, Is a bit incorrect.
I see from the comments that despite everyone involved clearly stating that the "single-shot sequences" aren't in fact, single-shot, loads of people still believe that they are.
The battlefield scene is 5 takes. It still looks great, but stop calling it something that it's not.
It would spell the end of our entire civilization. No more new generations, no more younger people stepping up to take the place of the older. Our population would shrink and shrink and shrink away into nothingness. It would give people a profound sense of hopelessness. Creating a new generation and passing on our genetics, knowledge and experiences is a fundamental aspect of what makes us human. Losing the ability to makes babies would be like losing what it is that makes us human.
@Chadwich well not really. how do you think that statement would make a gay person feel? they can't make babies? They key thing that makes us human, is independence. to be able to make decisions.
This movie is more an example of great direction and not camerawork. I don't think it is the movement and fluidity of the shots, but the nauseating orchestration of subjects within them that boggled my mind. Honestly, that uprising scene was astonishingly meticulous. Kudos to the people who toiled over that one for weeks.
@hellofart16 And camerawork as well, the action sequences are filmed all in one take. Just look at the uprising scene. It's as good as it is cause of that.
@FloppinPoptart623 Yeah that's what I meant by good direction. Imagine setting a shot like that up, with extras in certain places, vehicles, tricky terrain, etc.
I fully agree, 100%. Children of Men has become my all time favorite film for a number of reasons. The cinematography is some of the greatest the screen has ever seen, and to go along with that style is more substance than you can shake a stick at. It's a shame that it didn't nab a few Oscars but even more of a shame that it didn't even get nominated for best picture. However, how often does the Academy even come close to getting it right? Children of Men is better than the value of any award.
Great movie... but i think too accidental script for such difficult issue as it's shown in the movie. Too much action. Too much killing. Too much rebellion crap. The apocalypse is shown too dramatic. I believe in situation like shown in the movie the girl would be served best medical help You can imagine, served from anyone.
To everyone asking why this film wasn't considered for Oscars, it was. It was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
If this is some of the greatest camera work in movie history, then I have a couple of questions for you: 1. What do you think a camera work is? 2. What movie history are you talking about?
Movie history is fortunately much more than technological progress.
@spfccsmft I'm talking about the movie as well. Complex actions in long takes with almost impossible camera movements make neither a better camera work nor a better film. It all depends on the meaning of the image.
But let's say movies are better when the camera work is amazing. Then I disagree once again with you, I refuse to put this movie in the same category of films directed by Murnau, Ophuls, Tarkovski, Bergman, O. Welles, D. Sirk, Eisenstein..etc. They do know how to impress.
@militodiego You don't have to put it in the same category, but complex action shots are just as much a part of the art of cinematography as anything those directors did. I understand this doesn't as impress you as much, and those other directors were certainly much more groundbreaking, but that doesn't mean this isn't great camera work.
The car scene was main technically interesting shot in the film. It was a nicely directed film, but definitely doesn't come close to the title. There is no such thing, fortunately, as with stories there is no greatest just a host of ones that grab us in one way or another. Consider this against any of Antonini's films, or Orson Wells' Touch of Evil, Kubrick, Max Ophuls, Chris Doyles work on Wong Kar Wai's films, Fassbinder, Godard or kurosawa. I respect your passion, Its just a bold statement.
Just watched this movie. Bought for 3.00 quid from Asda. I feel guilty having paid so little because it truly is a great film. I agree that it breaks away from the routine predictable movies that have been produced for decades. It has a fantastic story, a dedicated and talented cast. The cinematography is captivating. I was enthralled. A+++ If you haven't already watch it!!!
kill all illuminati's & new world order member.s. destroy the fake govt of USA & also of NATO. (i am saying kill the govt only, not normal & innocent people)
As someone who also loves the camera work in Children of Men, I wanted to let you know that I used clips from your upload in my fan vid about "The Hunger Games." I hope TPTB use Alfonso Cuaron & Emmanuel Lubezki in the final movie of the trilogy (Mockingjay). My fan vid has Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Hunter Parrish as Peeta, Jadagrace as Rue, Chloe Moritz as Prim, and J.D. Pardo as Gale. Thank you for making this video.
@MyHallelujah I totally agree (obviously). He's one of a very small group of people who I think could bring an appropriately beautiful subtlety to what would essentially be a film about a violent, chaotic world on the eve of destruction. It would be a shame is they "disneyfy" a book that exemplifies the contrast between quiet, total personal loss and echoing destruction. Just because something is labeled YA doesn't mean that the audience needs a sanitized, sparkly version...IMHO
Michael Caine gets shot in this movie. Not many people know that.

FienStudios 3 months ago
@landonbrown6 America invented the film industry. The first working motion picture camera was created by Thomas Edison.

I came here because my YouTube account reccomeended it,
This looks apsolutly brillaint,
not because Michael Caine is in it, but because its has a fantastic story.
Plus got nominated for three oscars including Cinematography so... "The greatest camera work in movie history... " LOL there's your answer.
FienStudios 3 months ago
The Evil Dead series knocks every movie in this category of cinematography out of the world.
RollersPostulate 3 months ago
I see from the comments that despite everyone involved clearly stating that the "single-shot sequences" aren't in fact, single-shot, loads of people still believe that they are.
The battlefield scene is 5 takes. It still looks great, but stop calling it something that it's not.

I like it they choose a black woman to produce the first baby, which grow up to be the original man, to ensure the continuation of the human race.

why would the world break down if women couldn't have babies? It wouldn't matter to those already here.
cb11082 3 months ago
@cb11082
Chadwich 3 months ago 17
@Chadwich well not really. how do you think that statement would make a gay person feel? they can't make babies? They key thing that makes us human, is independence. to be able to make decisions.

This movie is more an example of great direction and not camerawork. I don't think it is the movement and fluidity of the shots, but the nauseating orchestration of subjects within them that boggled my mind. Honestly, that uprising scene was astonishingly meticulous. Kudos to the people who toiled over that one for weeks.
hellofart16 4 months ago
@hellofart16 And camerawork as well, the action sequences are filmed all in one take. Just look at the uprising scene. It's as good as it is cause of that.
FloppinPoptart623 3 months ago
@FloppinPoptart623 Yeah that's what I meant by good direction. Imagine setting a shot like that up, with extras in certain places, vehicles, tricky terrain, etc.
hellofart16 3 months ago
I loved this movie so fucking much. Then I watched teh trailer and found out Sigur Ros was in it... Amazingness.
juices1234 4 months ago

It was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
spfccsmft 4 months ago
If this is some of the greatest camera work in movie history, then I have a couple of questions for you: 1. What do you think a camera work is? 2. What movie history are you talking about?
Movie history is fortunately much more than technological progress.
militodiego 4 months ago
@militodiego The poster is referring to the film itself, not the trailer.
spfccsmft 4 months ago
@spfccsmft I'm talking about the movie as well. Complex actions in long takes with almost impossible camera movements make neither a better camera work nor a better film. It all depends on the meaning of the image.
But let's say movies are better when the camera work is amazing. Then I disagree once again with you, I refuse to put this movie in the same category of films directed by Murnau, Ophuls, Tarkovski, Bergman, O. Welles, D. Sirk, Eisenstein..etc. They do know how to impress.
militodiego 4 months ago

1raraavis 10 months ago
@1raraavis I think Alfonso Cuaron's take on some of the scene's in Mockingjay would be simply fantastic :D
MyHallelujah 9 months ago
@MyHallelujah I totally agree (obviously). He's one of a very small group of people who I think could bring an appropriately beautiful subtlety to what would essentially be a film about a violent, chaotic world on the eve of destruction. It would be a shame is they "disneyfy" a book that exemplifies the contrast between quiet, total personal loss and echoing destruction. Just because something is labeled YA doesn't mean that the audience needs a sanitized, sparkly version...IMHO
