JUST MISSED!!! "Cinnamon'" just missed making the Billboard's Hot Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 15 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1968/69, it entered the charts on Oct. 26th, 1968!!!
i babysat for his daughter and son, when they rented a house in parma heights ohio. kimberly was maybe 4 years old and their son was an infant. it was when this song came timewise, carol was a nice woman, i liked them all very much.
I was writing a song with Johnny Cymbal years ago and he told me the story of this song. He wrote the song and recorded the demo and went to pitch to an artist on a label in NY and they said this is a great record and he said OK... They sent him upstairs and asked who the artist was and since he didn't want to tour anymore he told them it was his brother Derek. Derek went on tour and nobody knew... The label wanted to add in the one potato part. That's how I remember it.
I still remember being a kid back in 1968 and my Mom giving me money to buy one 45. It was between Little Arrows by Leapy Lee and Cinnamon by Derek. I ended up buying Little Arrows, which I still have, but regretted not being able to get Cinnamon. Thanks for bringing back those musical memories.
I love this song, i'd been searching for it for the past few weeks and finally found it on Itunes, i was looking for it under another artist, i don't know when it came out but i love it, thanks, brings back so many memories.
I had a vague memory of this song and did a google search on the snippet of lyric I remember - I think I last heard the song in Kindergarten!! I remember my teenage sister liked it, must have been in '68, then it completely disappeared. I've never heard it on oldies radio, thanks for the memory!
I used to hear it on oldies radio back in the late '80s-early '90s, and it blew me away. And yet, nobody I've ever talked to since then has heard of it.

such a wealth of memories - of a care-free youth long past...
but the years go by so quickly - and the gray hairs come so fast...

I love this song. Would get it stuck in my head, years ago.
One potato, two potato, three potato, four
Open up, Cinnamon, I want more
Five potato, six potato, seven potato, eight
Give it to me, Cinnamon, I can't wait
LOL ;-)
