You flatter me StephenChin1 (or do you accuse me?!) I am certainly not worthy to judge any piano competition - especially the Leeds. Either way, you irony is appreciated and enjoyed. In my music degree I did specialise in early Romantic piano music (mainly Schumann) I don't know soooooooo much about Brahms as you humorously assert, but I know enough about this concerto to pass an informed and educated comment.
Thanks for your comments arexsaint. Don't get me wrong, this is an incredible performance by one of the world's leading young pianists. My comment was to point out that Brahms did not write the final chords for both orchestra and piano. Sunwook knew that. Fine, show off during a cadenza , but this is not what the composer intended nor indicated at this point. Thats why I agree with the other comments abouts its bravura. The concerto is majestic enough without this sort of mischief.
@Jitpring So much have I enjoyed our banter, Jitpring! What worries me about this sorry age of ours is.... what will Sunwook do next? Play along with the orchestra at any point it takes his fancy?
@longeaton34 He'll have to go all the way, in full conformity with today's shameless vulgarity, by playing naked surrounded by a coven of copulating black lesbian Wiccan dwarves!
@Jitpring "playing naked surrounded by a coven of copulating black lesbian Wiccan dwarves! " My my! I wouldn't object at all IF he plays the concerto correctly! Bring on the lesbian Wiccan dwarves, I say.....
Sorry Sunwook - if you're following this, we really think you are one of the world's finest young pianists and I am sorry that your mischief in the final chords of the Brahms with the Halle has caused such consternation - its nothing personal. Just don't do it again.....
longeaton34 --Is it big deal for you? He is a pianist who won this huge competition. Why you think that he did not know original score? The condoctor and Kim, they decide for it. Just enjoy..

Shame on you Sunwook,
Any Brahms student will know that the final chords of the last movement of this concerto are for orchestra only - Sunwook can be clearly seen playing the final cadences! Mathpianist is right - bravura purposes, but not what Johannes Brahms wrote. Tompilk spotted it as well - well done you! But in the original score? Oh no.
I'm a Korean, and I know that Kim had been to a lot of music camps to be taught by world's important pianists and pedagogues. Yundi Li is more like the kind of pianist you are talking about, I guess..
Nothing compared to other pianists

his playing is rather boring and lacks emotion. Personally I don't think he measures up to much better pianists like kissin and lisitsa.

this is a really powerful performance of this piece!

@longeaton34 Agreed. Discriminating taste must reject this kind of mischief.

@Jitpring At last! A comment that exonnerates me. Was beginning to think it was me not "moving with times" or whatever!

@longeaton34 I'm with you. Speaking of the times, I've adopted the following as this sorry age's epitaph:
O age, thou art shamed.*
O shame, where is thy blush?**
-Shakespeare, Julius Caesar,* Hamlet**
Cheers, J

why did he play with the orchestra at the end? i haven't heard it like that before.
tompilk 4 years ago
This was the winning performance at the Leeds 2006 final. He is the youngest winner ever of the Leeds.
sngholland 4 years ago
i meant in the piece, not the competition! he plays with the orchestra for the last few chords... that's not in the score as far as i am aware
tompilk 4 years ago
I do not know why he did it. I asked a pianist if the original score was different from what we know today and she said No.
Maybe it was Kim's own choice..
sngholland 4 years ago
Maybe It is final concert for winner. Contuctor suggest that I think. Because It looks better In the END.
