I don't like the complicated-ness of hypercam for editing and whatnot. And I do like the quality of fraps. My problem, though is I don't know how to get fraps to record my visualboy advance. Do I have to change settings in the visual boy to make it run directx or what?

on my visual boy advance you cant record with fraps.

what version is yours?

You haven't set the video output correctly, it has to be DirectX/Direct3D.
