  • wow you'd be a nice host for some sort of show, you're excellent and talking haha

  • This was a fail at triphop

  • vg

  • Sounds like you just beat match the claps and let the kicks be the transition to the new set of drum lines for the next song sorta like Psybient?

  • Trip hop really? Fail.

  • This guy reminds me of jason bradbury off of gadget show?

  • Comment removed

  • LOL wtf is this! :)

  • i would try mixing but i don't know anyone with the equipment to borrow :(

  • Hey Ella, you are the man!

I just started djing and u are such a big help.

I wished my teachers would be half as good in teaching as you.

    sorry for bad english.

    peace :)

  • 兄貴!

  • Trip Hop: Lovage, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheba, Zero 7, Supreme beings of leisure, Thievery corporation, archive, blue foundation, dirty elegance, Royksopp, Sneaker Pimps???????? Anyone?

  • @Disposition446

bonobo, Dj cam, Morcheeba, wax tailor, Dj Food, DJ Mark Farina, dj shadow, Telefuzz, some tracks of gorillaz, some tracks from Millimetrik and cant leave out the legendary Dj Krush!

  • @PlanetIEarth I'm glad you mentioned DJ Krush too many people forget about him

  • @roundpeach420 What? How can it be, to forget about Him, for me he's a trip-hop icon...

ps. that song Lena Conquest "boundaries" - its first time i heard this... and oooooh.... Music will always be able to stun me cold

  • @Disposition446 Unkle, Nightmares On Wax, Portishead, Air, Tricky, Burial, - btw props for including Sneaker Pimps :p

  • the term "trip hop" was coined in some magazine that was talking about DJ shadow back in like 94 or something.

so if you want to know what trip hop is, listen to Endtroducing.

and some Massive Attack wouldn't hurt either.

  • peep my new EP "FREQUENCY RAPTURE" feat david icke ,alex jones

    peace

  • Whenever I've listened to Trip Hop, I've always thought of slowed down Hip Hop breaks, mixed with some jazz, blues, and just some all around trippy sounds along with some trippy vocals. Hip Hop + Jazz + Blues + Weird Shit= Trip Hop

  • basically trip hop is hip hop drums with electronic synthesizers n stuff.

  • @sizqster yes

  • @Rozyonnie if u consider at least a few massive attack, nightmares on wax and unkle songs u must admit there is at least a lot of hip hop influences in trip hop music. also check out cannibal ox who are essentially an amazing outfit who produce trip hop beats to rap over.

  • what the hell is trip hop ?

  • @Rashad198911 not what he thinks it is. check out nightmares on wax or pretty lights.

  • @vicktrimethylene thanx dude ;)

  • If Bear Grylls was a DJ, he would be this guy.

  • the only similarity between hip hop and trip hop is the break beat .. now lets all move on with life shall we -_-

  • awesome!

  • blablabla ..incredible how much you "know"

is it in the human nature to border everything ?

  • straight up!!!! motivation, love it. good work dude, good vibes.

  • don't do drugs too much...

  • tu fais du caca

  • bamm bamm bamm :D

this dude is likebruce lee :D

  • you can tell the beat of most hip hop tracks by the snare or clap that hits every other beat.

  • it´s in the info ;)

  • please, anybody know the name of these two tracks¿? are amazing, please answer quikly, and thanks!!

  • He says the name of the songs in the video. Are you fucked in the head?

  • its not trip hop its big beat

  • there are a few different terms for trip hop. some say its just sort of odd music where a woman drowns over it. another term is the music in this video. another for trip hop (and is mine) is just music with trippy effects. some have hip hop style beats. some are more house-ish example:audio bullys-shot you down

  • @Vitilsky: They are not the same, but they are similar, trip hop has hip hop beats, it can but in the most cases it does not have mc rapping over it, usually trip hop comes with a nice womans vocal...

  • TRIPHOP HAS NOTHING to do with Hiphop. they are part of different music style branches...

  • @Vitilsky, actually, it does. it is a hybrid from hip hop's "branch".

  • Certainly not culturally, but they are almost the same in rhythm.

  • When he is explaining it's like blah blah wank wank but... When he is manhandling the decks... It kinda makes me hot.

LoL and I love how excited he gets at the end.

  • nice mini mix ^^

  • Not Trip Hop, but good video.

  • I agree with others...

This wasn't really Trip Hop... It was more like Groovy Hiphop/Funky Hiphop

  • Its more groovy hiphop, I agree, but he himself says it.

  • PRACTICE AND ENJOY!!!

  • Groovy mix...........and for some of the other people leaving comments, I'm sure we can all see the connection between Hip-hop and Trip-hop, and Trip-Hop is such a broad genre that he would have been there all day listing it's different aspects, so stop being so pedantic and give the guy a break! :P

Keep up the good work John.

    All the best.

  • Too many comment about hip-hop vs. trip-hop, but the tutorial is about mixing ! Unfortunately, I didn't understand very well what J was actualy did there (I mean, is there a beat-matching, and how did he do it ?)

  • similar to hip hop? not totally likely. not totally anyway. trip hop is generally slower and its more a less a blend of blues and electronica.

  • @kmfdm5

furthermore a woman sings in trip-hop, this is one of the basics of trip-hop too. but u'r right: not tatelly like hip-hop.

  • @razer710 well guys can sing it too just look at massive attack or tricky. i think thats a bit of a stereotype u know like all symphonic metal bands have to have a female singer or all goth bands have a male and female vocalist. i dont really believe that the gender of singer affects the genre.

  • @kmfdm5 rock+hiphop+lounge+downtempo=triphop

  • @metroduced lounge, hip hop, and down tempo yes but i cant see rock

  • Comment removed

  • @kmfdm5 In regards to DJ'ing specifically I would agree with this video more considering DJ'ing is 90% about the rhythm and beat.

  • @Bouchon211 ahh i see. i didnt really think of it like that

  • @kmfdm5 Similar means "alike but different", not "the same as". Your description seems to imply that you also think it's similar, though not the same.

  • @abundancebomb i know what similar means, hence why i said "not totally likely. not totally anyway"

  • @kmfdm5

but its pretty much electronic hip hop if you think about it,its like experimental hip hop

  • @955pokerface perhaps

  • @kmfdm5

    more like jazz and electronica

  • @someguitardude too down tempo, down beat, and slow to be jazz.

  • @kmfdm5 Jazz does not have a specific tempo. Miles davis created a great album Kind Of Blue that is very down tempo.

  • @TheReligionkills seems like it does. i havent heard too much miles davis but what i heard came off as blues.

  • @kmfdm5 actually it does originate from hip hop, and yes it is slower but the main difference is that there's singing, especially delivered by female vocals.

  • @kmfdm5 btw, there's no specific genre such as eletronica...

  • @frulius try spelling it right first off. and do your research yes there is.

  • @kmfdm5 real ass hip hop!

  • Ur the freaking man!

  • what he doesnt mention is that all REAL trip-hop djs dont fuckin touch those stupid cd-dj peices of shit...

  • He is a huge fan of vinyl.

He has loads of gear so he varies what he uses for each video.

  • ha gr8 vid!

  • And I disagree that trip hop is necessarily happy upbeat sounding. A lot of current trip hop is down tempo, melancholy music. Check out massive attacks 100th window album for a very good example of this. Best trip hop album of the last 5 years.

  • The main difference between trip hop and hip hop is that trip have often employs melodic vocalists and musical passages over that typical hip hop beat. Daughter darling, sarahh fimm, Halou. All are good examples of this.

  • you fucking ROCK! :) classic

  • I love your energy man....Rich in LA

  • yo you r the teacher im the classes ,,,thank you p.s do u know were i can find inexpensive cdj's,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • all I wanna say is :THANK YOU for all the info and clarity you put things in here and explain to even someone like me who never touched a turn table before or a mixer...Ill try to invest some money fo some beginner tools and see how it goes...You are fantastic..I live in Bedfordshire and hopefully if you got time you'll answer some of my questions on private message.Thank you once gain. You are really motivating people ...

  • one is primal scream

  • can somebody tell me wich are the songs in this video.(mixed&original)?...please...if somebody knows...please tell meeeee!!!thank you very much!

  • primal scream - jailbird

leena conquest a track blablabla boundaries ^^

  • that "four on the floor" is what drove me away from House/techno, and into Trip Hop. Just seems to be more diversity and originality in the genre IMO.

  • argh i wanna know how to use those mixing boards some day!!

  • Nice nice. You Got That Beat

  • to each their own , but ya wont get thumb downed if ya dont put something negative.

  • I love trip hop :(

  • i need to now the name of da first track pls. big thx

  • Gorillaz is trip hop

  • i love him groving to the music

  • cant believe people don't know trip-hop, i mean go watch any movie...it probably has some trip hop

  • true that, documentaries too

  • Come to think of it,, pretty true ! i mean ALOT of movies i can think of it has alot of trip hop like beats and mixes good observation ogunbekuno2009

  • so do alot of TV Shows. Take the show House for example the theme song is a Trip Hop song by a very big trip hop/acid jazz group. Song is Teardrop by Massive Attack

  • nice vid watched it several times!!!!

    very informative..

    i make trip hop too...

    check it out!!!!!!

  • I don't think being drummer is needed, but a good rhythmic sense is, like I never used drums, but because I have a (pretty) good sense of rhythm I can Dj.

  • LoL....i'm really practicing good with your tutorials...i'm getting there trust me...U a F*****G Awesome Instructor!..."GOOD JOB"......it's juz like MCD...I"M LUVIN" IT!!!...haha..

  • good shit but are you aware of the stereotypes surrounding that ear ring of yours?

  • i can see the drums at the back.. Im also a drummer and i think been a drummer makes u the best DJ ever :P:P

  • haha you got that one rite!!! im drummer as well and i make my own music it just comes natural ...now when i mix its even better !! we as drummer have it all. - Dj Bocho

  • To me, trip hop is about reflecting on a mellow far off state of mind. To me hip hop is about bitching and complaining and being angry.

I don't see any relation between the two styles whatsoever, other than using 'tr' instead of 'h'.

  • Cool, man. Thanks for detailing how you don't know what you're talking about

  • You mad? You mad. This nigga mad.

    You mad.

  • haha a1 is a dummy. he mad.

  • yea thats untrue

  • thank you mate

  • cool system

  • Thank you

  • Right on dude keep it up! the world is and can listen now

  • can sum1 plz help me i got a dj set but i only hav 1 turntable and a mixer but for sum reason the faders dnt work nd i cnt do fader scratches wat do i do to b able to get the fadeers working coz everyfing else on the mixer works

  • you could always buy new faders

  • Four ON the floor.

  • Both are acceptable.

  • No, they aren't. it's 4 on the floor.

  • Less talk and SPINN THAT SHIT! :D

  • What tiesto lacks in originality, he makes up for in addictiveness. not really my cup of tea, either, i must say, but i do say he has good production/addictive qualities, if anything. as for this video, im watching it for the funny manner of speaking that this guy calls his own. ten points on that one!

  • very enlightenin vid, u opened ma eyes bro. neva evun knew much about trip hop till now

  • Trip hop is great man! Your tutorial rules too man! perhaps you could have made it sound more "trippy" but still, that was awesome!!

  • oh yea and his proper (vinyl) turntables are vestax( THERE BEHIND THE CD DECKS) so there not that lame KWhY7. and he does know what he's talkin about LF39MC

  • 1. he's usin cd decks 2. im a dj and i no wot he's talkin about and 3. he knows wot he's doin so why dont u little wannabe bedroom dj's give him a break, id like to see u do better!!!!

  • This is a tutorial you dumbasses, its an example. Your pathetic because I don't see anything of yours that you can show off.

  • good music :)

  • damn that is good music

  • Thanks!!!

  • what is beat 3:10 ???????

  • yeah man that sweet

I am goin to broadcasting school to elarn to be a dj, cameraman, anchor, reporter, sound technician, all that shit. I mainly wanna do dj'ing though. really informative.

  • hey jonathan, i like the way u teach it helped me anyway. i like that funky trip hop. i'm really motivated to start Dj'ing. ill have a look at your videos, i hope you do more...

  • you should be murdered. turntables are #1

  • HAHAHA You are pathetic.

PC Dj´s Are crap.. you dont feel the music like you DO with TT´s or CD Players..

Fuck Virtual DJ & That Crap.!

  • That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

    Lazers? C'mon man!

  • ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

No you are pathetic, you shut up.

Record players are lame and pathetic. For babies that *think* they look cool.

They don't. It's ancient technology and pathetic. And that's that. Sorry if you can't take it.

  • yeah his record players are are lame

    lol idiot

  • They are CD players that he's mixing with, genius.

  • I have no idea what the fuck you're talking about, and I strongly suggest you keep your fucking snot mouth shut.

  • CD sound is superior in every way. The only point to using vinyl is to allow for that lame ass scratching, and to make it look like DJ's are doing real work.

A computer could do everything so much better and more efficient.

Turntables are pathetic, I'm sticking to my original story.

  • You really shouldn't talk about things you don't know about, makes you sound stupid. If you don't DJ then just shut up.

  • So called "DJ's" that play with turn tables just look pathetic. They have to put on a tune. Instead of using modern tools, they make it seem they're actually have a meaningful roll and put themselves on display with one side of a headphone set between their shoulder and head, and put on this act to make it seem they're really cool.

It's soooo stupid and sooooo uber lame.

Computers man! If a DJ wants to have something to do, then get into VJ'ing or something. Put on a display or something.

  • Music is based upon sound. I do not go to clubs and check out DJs to watch videos. I do not go to concerts to see visuals.

You are trashing DJ's and you know nothing about it because you do not do it yourself!

  • Watch DJ Krush... turntablism seems like art when you watch him.

  • So much effort to transition one song into the next, and a bit of scratching once in a while.

I think DJ's should try something new. Screw this lame turn table crap. Think interactive lasers, displays, video monitors. Like a VJ, but then better. Interact with the crowd. Have some sort of dynamic live mixed tune, on the computer, and get the audience going. Adjust the music and displays based directly on audience feedback.

  • With krush its not about the show but about the music...not everyone can listen to his art. Trust me, i know what im saying. Very often its too much for ppl to comprehend. But if you really love his music, you dont care how he plays it anymore. I heard he uses some really old turn tables and still manages to be one of the best dj's in the world (not officialy cuz the mainstream media will never call something from the underground 'good')

  • wow. listen to me you ignorant prick. both dj krush and dj shadow - probably the best turtablists on this planet - make and play and mix their own music (sometimes each other's). and i dont call them best because of their dj skills but because of the wonderful music they create. they're world class trip hop/chillout/hip hop music creators/producers, and you, sir, are a douche. next time use google before you post your comments. peace

  • If they create new music, then that's commendable. But that's not what's happening often. Often, people like "Tiesto" just sit there and put a record on from William Orbit, and then just jump up and down clapping his hands before a stupid idiotic audience of doofuses.

  • but from what i know tiesto is not a turntablist.

  • When I see Tiesto put on William Orbit's version of Adagio for Strings, and see the entire audience get all excited and cheering Tiesto like he's some sort of god bring everyone his wonderful music, I feel like throwing up. An audience of doofuses.

  • i think ur confusing turntablists with "regular DJs". turntabilsts dont just play songs one after another. i dunno exactly how it looks like, but from what i know and have seen, they use samples, they do with them whatever they want (scratch etc.). I may me wrong but ive seen alot of dj krush's shows and i think he uses samples all the time. and there's nothing wrong about regular DJs as long as they play their own music and the music is good (tiesto's not one of them).

  • I would most definitely classify Testicle as a "turntable-ist".

But I can appreciate if a DJ brings truly unique and new tunes to the table. But it better be more than just changing records and flowing one into the other with the odd scratch.

  • Testicle xD oh and please watch watch?v=1BYR0Es6U_A to finally understand what im saying. pretty please... please :]

  • Ok, I see a clear distinction between actually making music using turntables as an instruments. He also uses some synthesizing mixers looks like, I'm guessing.

Not my cup of tea necessarily, but impressive.

On the other end of the spectrum there are such lamos as Tiesto with crowds of worshiping doofuses.

I guess we're all in agreement now.

  • 'I guess we're all in agreement now.'

    Yup ;]

  • Incorrect. CD sound is not superior to vinyl

  • Incorrect. CD sound *IS* superior to vinyl!

Vinyl is inaccurate, picks up vibrations, has distortions, and picks up any imperfections.

The story the plastic boys push, is complete and utter religious bullshit.

  • haha no a computer can never beet a human

theres things computers i guess *hear* the huimans dont which makes beats worse and incompatible

  • You know, you're really showing how pathetic this crowd is. "haha". An English grammatical disaster follows. "beet". "i" (instead of "I"). "huimans". "dont".

Good grief man, learn to spell properly.

Firefox has a built in spell checker which really helps.
