when the league was good, not 30 teams with more than 15 that suck and only 5 good. When most guys did at least 3 years in college and came in with good fundamentals and attitudes.Only the stars had endorsements and multimillion dollar deals. Not coons and criminals like Iverson and Melo...or brats like Lebron..
editing back in the 90s : larry and dr. j look at eachother, pause the camera, stay completely still while magic johnson runs to his position, and voila magic.. oh yea and silly pop-up sound when magic appears. gotta love the 80s :)
@uberathlete Both the 76er's and the Celtics played hard against each other and fights are bound to happen. I think both Larry and Dr. J got over that fight pretty quickly. The only superstar the really holds grudges is the Super star of Super star's Mr. Jordan.
read Charles Barkleys autobiography he said how stoic the Dr was, and that Moses and Bobby Jones were more approachable. Commercials just don't show how people truly are. Nothing against Dr J, he didn't say he was stuck up just real quiet. He also said he played as hard as he could every night and lead by that example but he wasn't one to come over to anybody and in the locker room to give an encouraging word. Can't be everything to every body

Magic and Dr. J - 1st game - Magic yoyo's up the court - top of the 3 point line, Dr J squares up - Magic backs him up to the top of the key. Kareem sets a pick and Magic breaks hard to the right obviously looking to jam.
Dr J spins off and breaks to he left and beats Magic to the rim. For what seems like seconds, Dr J hangs over Magic like a condor about to eat his eyes. With the ball hopelessly stuck behind his head Magic drops his left and flicks the ball to Nixon for a free throw! YAAAAA!
@cbaldwinjr: Nike didn't create the hood or the problems in the hood. If those other companies you mentioned made better-looking or better-performing sneakers, maybe Nike wouldn't be so dominant. People weren't dying for those sneakers because they couldn't compare to Nikes. Nike had the best marketing which made people want their shoes. Would you rather they didn't advertise or would you rather those other companies advertise better and make inner-city kids want to kill for their shoes?
Wow. Converse were the style back in the day until Michael signed with Nike & made Jordans shoes that put Nike on the map to success which is where they are today.
Oh man, no wonder Nike would come to dominate the youth market as soon as MJ arrived on the scene - Converse had the three best players in the world at the time and managed to make them look like complete dorks.
I was just about to post some comments about Michael Jordan and Nike, before I read your comment.
Good observation.... Converse had the 3 biggest names in basketball, at the time, but look how far they have fallen
If converse has signed Jordan, would the things have turned out differently, for everybody (ie Nike, Converse, Reebok).
Nike was smart.. They gave Jordan the biggest endorsement deal for an athlete ever, and they used creative ad campaigns, with Spike Lee and other peeps
They were smart enough to make their brand about conveying an image...Converse stuck to basketball. However, no one I know ever got shot for a pair of Energy Star's. Nike, for all its genius, is partly to blame for some of the ills of the inner-city. Sneakers being more important than fundamentals like education, etc. It DOES cut a wide swath. I mean, people weren't dying for Adidas, British Knights, K-Swiss, Troops, Reeboks, or Puma's. Just sayin...
@crackwhen cheesy is a good call but when you look at anything compared to today's commercials the older Nike ones look just as hokie, except the Spike Lee commercials they'll be timeless.
