  • UH, UHHHH, UH, UUUHHHHH. Well done Ellen...

  • @MissButterfly37 funny , thats what we said in England...

  • "i was chuffed to bits by your ba-donka-donk"

    lol, its so funneh!!!!!

  • "really?" 0:54 lol Laurie's face after the first word love it! his real voice is so cool! :D

  • Its weird to hear him speak with an accent

  • isnt it "Shorty"?

  • @hendrix6 It can be both xD

  • This is weird. See, I know Hugh Laurie is British, but all I've seen him in in British shows are Blackadder, and he's younger then (and possibly putting on a funny comic voice). The only things I've seen him in when he's older are in Stuart Little and House, and he puts on an American accent in those ... it's weird to hear his actual British accent.

  • omg seriously who says chin wag *_*

  • Chin Wag is normally used as a noun, as in `we had a chin wag´

  • I can see now why the British think us Americans are morons -__-

  • @MrPill0w1 Americans are cool people bare friendly mate...peace out from the uk dude

  • American English is way better. And people from other countries can understand you better, because the pronunciation is clearer. So American English for the win

  • @PS3XBOX360GUY american english is crap

  • @jookle1 lol totally agree with u there

  • @PS3XBOX360GUY lol mate you got the English language from us. i say no more

  • HES SO HOT :|

  • i had no idea he was english!!! :O!!!

  • damn. i would NOT have clicked the link to this video if i knew it was ellen.

  • strange words I think the funniest is ba donka donk

  • why is she being so arrogant for ? stupid american hoe

  • Comment removed

  • fuck i thought the title said "Hugh Laurie:slang words with ellen"

  • The only variation of "shawty" I will ever use, in any circumstance, is to refer the mediocre quality of work.

Example: Those damn hip-hoppers shit out shawty rhymes with their "music" and should all be subjected to extrajudicial killings.

  • @GruppeSechs2004 shoddy. exactly what i was thinking. without the killings part. ;)

  • SHAWTY HAD THEM APPLE BOTTOM JEANS. BOOTS WITH THE FURRR! LOLOLOLOL

  • misleading title, unless accents means phrase in britain

  • I was sure I had invented all those brit ones back at school

  • They left out the most interesting one: May I bum a fag ??

  • Lol,,where in american are those words used??never had them!!!

  • @alyce829 hahahaha ur right.. no here uses ba-donka-donk or whatever it was

  • @alyce829 Those words are used in America, just by the more urban community. I heard shawty all the time when I used to live in the city.

  • @alyce829 I've never heard most of the British ones either lol.

  • Hugh Laurie is a good sport for going along with something that's so stupid and a waste of time. You know slang isn't cool anymore when uttered by a talk show host whose main demographic is soccer moms.

  • @Leftysfive93 daaaaaayummmm....lol

  • He made a real hash of that didn't he.

  • excluding ba-donk-a-donk.

  • I'm american and I've never heard of any of the american ones...

  • @JamesWilliams1990 yes reg hugh, i know this And technically @blacklund07 we usually hear him WITH an accent.

  • any lamb notice the box on the bottem of the screen right when the video starts , lol

  • They Americans don't get us at all and I love that.

Why do the Brits say Herbs and not Erbs? Because it's got an f****ing H in it. Thank you Eddie Izzard for explaining in one joke why we're different.

  • when you realise doctor house is from the uk O.O

  • shin wag Hugh? Chin wag

  • No Gobsmacked?

  • Shawty sounds like a great word for paedophiles. They can say they were checking out a shawty and people assume they mean a bird. Americans and their misuse of the English language!

    How about these Americans:

    1. Luberdubs (works best with a northern accent)

    2. Bobblers

    3. Gazongas

    4. Japs eye

    5. Bell end

  • @skeletorphd Right after you cited one (false) example of how Americans misuse the English language (It's not a bird. It's a girl, and no one says that anyway), you cited five examples of how the British misuse that very language. Curious.

  • American: DING!

    British: *que Benny Hill*

  • Shawty = shorty. It's from dem rap songs.

  • @minciNashu yea, i was kinda annoyed how they spelled and said it.... if ur gonna do this, at least get the questions right, i mean come on, im danish, and i know this :P

  • he sounds so different!

  • Wait so what is shawty?

They told me she was wrong with that non-brittish wrong signal at the end.

  • english accent is the right one.

  • @TommyGun8142 thats the reaason it is called english language.

  • thats irish slang, brits robbed it from us along with all our trees ;-)

  • @TheMagnatar Haha no not at all.

  • I don't think Hugh Laurie enjoyed Ellen's terrible sense of humour.

  • G-day mate, they should have thrown in someone to do our Aussie slangs :P

  • @ZroDfects like what, mate that is very unaustraaalian of you ;-)

  • @TheMagnatar .... Mother fuck yeah !

  • Hugh Laurie! Champion!

  • @highlander2107 Jealous of what, cunt biscuit?

  • "In America we really like to rub it in!"

  • Shawty is a young pretty woman

  • "Right, we definitely don't have those in England." xD hahaha

  • his CH's are rly like SH's :))

  • How lame am I? I didn't know he was English... lol

  • lmao

  • who the hell picked slang for her, i never heard of any of those except shawty and thats fucking hood slang not american

  • Forgot House, I remember this dude from 101 Dalmatians.

  • im a northerner (from england) and know what chin wag means

  • He is sexy as hell

  • Excellent !!

  • Good old Hugh.

If you fancy some more real language try our Internet Radio Station.

    Audio Book Radio.

  • Hugh Laurie - Is it Ba-Donk -ah Donk?

Ellen - Yes Ba Donk-ah Donk

Hugh Laurie - Ba-Donk -ah Donk, That a Fabulous word!

    Ehehe Dkm! =D

  • This isn't an "accent" ... It's slang. But hey, other than the misuse of "accent" in the title, funny video.

  • Of course we know chinwag. I use it. Don't understand 'English' people here saying they don't know it. Northerners maybe?

  • Hugh Laurie's face most of the time just looks like "You're just fucking with me, right? You can't possibly use that word anywhere."

  • Ba-Donka-Donk is from a country music song... so that is American-ish. I mean... can a country music singer invent a word that nobody EVER uses in actual conversation and still refer to that word as "American Slang"? idk... but anyway

Shawty is just the ignorant fuck's version of "shorty - somebody who's short" but too stupid to pronounce the damn word.

Lastly, flossing? I don't know where that came from. Maybe that's like calling jewelry "ice". I have no idea.

  • hilarious!!!

  • The title's a bit misleading. The video's about expressions not accents.

  • this is more like ;

    50'S Britain vs African-American Ghetto

  • lmaooo that was hilarious

  • I don't believe that he don't know "shawty". I'm not a native speaker even know that.

  • I'm English and I have no idea what chin wag means:Lxx

  • @A7M18BFFLX How the hell can an Englishman not know what a chin wag is? that's mental. I'm guessing you must live isolated in the country somewhere, or your about 10 years old?

  • Ellen ! Ellen ! She's so sexy but I'm the man T_T

  • Comment removed

  • This made me chuffed to bits. ;3

~I didn't know what flossing was and I'm from the US! >X3

...and I thought shawty was a young woman who's short and is a hotty. :d

  • Im from America and I don't know half of these

  • @vprharmonia I'm from NZ and I knew all except Shawty

  • I don't like House, but I love Hugh Laurie in Jeeves and Wooster.

  • much rather prefer the british sounding hugh laurie

  • @gipsontvp1 you mean regular hugh laurie?

  • @gipsontvp1 thats because we always here the without accent voice.

  • His british accent is.......may i say Sexy ;)

  • i thought shawty meant shotgun, lol jk, but i do play to much cod >.<

  • @zc630

    I think you mean "Shotty"

  • I dig HOUSE ... That show is the Truth!! This was funny cuz Ellen is so silly.. I gotta give her credit cuz she stays relevant with her comedy. I don't watch her show cuz I have a job & I don't have a DVR to record her. Basically, she's talented but but not my drug of choice regardless. Kudos for having Hue Laurie on the shoe cuz he's dope on HOUSE!!

  • I've never seen an episode of House, nor do I intend to. But I love Hugh Laurie. If you haven't seen the British show Black Adder you haven't seen Hugh at his finest. My favorite is when he portrays the Prince Regent.

  • Why did Ellen use those ghetto rap words as her examples of American slang? Very few of us speak quite like that. She shoulda used phrases like: Catchin' some rays, Catchin' some z's, Aim for the Cheap Seats, That came out of left field, etc.

  • o.o I've never heard of Flossing...

  • Ellen: "Ba-donka-donk"

Me (Scottish): "Aww come on! It's a lassie's arse!"

Serious clash of cultures there... dont think Ellen wouldve understood me xP

  • Sadly, I'm American born and bred, and I did better with the English slang than the American ones. Wow... lol

  • @AuroraWhispers yes, but generally their fake accent (American) sounds similar to their real accent. Idk, his just doesnt sound too similar

  • HUGH LAURIES REAL VOICE DOES NOT MATCH HIS VOICE AS HOUSE AT ALL! that's strange.

  • @mightytosave24 He's British, isn't House American...?

  • Shawty is a young kid or woman? I thought it just meant 'short'. Fuck gangsta talk

  • I'm an American and I don't know any of these words.

  • My american mate didnt know any of these slang words :P

  • Shoddy???

  • All of the "American slang" were just words that stupid rappers used in their shitty "music". Non-ghetto people don't ever use those words. Better examples of American slang would be: buck, cop, booze, catch some z's, etc...

  • @SinnersGoToHell But if you used words like that he would know what they mean.

  • @ItsSoEZPZ I bet you're right. I still don't like her choice of words to use, though.

  • @SinnersGoToHell Booze is used very commonly in Britain too :)

  • @RamonTheMighty Ahhhh, you got me on that one! I feel so ashamed now.

  • @SinnersGoToHell FEEL THE SHAME. FEEL IT TRICKLE DOWN YOUR NECK >:(

  • Do alot of Americans find this woman funny?

  • @PeterStoreysbutler i can't speak for the majority; but i can speak for me, and for the numbers of people who had, over the years, bought tickets to experience her stand-up performances: yes — we do find her funny.

  • I've watched House yet I've never heard Hugh Laurie's actual English voice(or at least fully anyway). First time and I am a little bit surprised.

And I knew none of the slang.

  • When a 12.6% minority speaks it, it's not American slang, it's ethnic slang. I think all Ellen's examples came from the same 12.6%. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not representative.

  • he maybe hugh but he will always be house to me

  • lol, noone says "Chin wag". And "chuffed" works on it's own. I was expecting better slang, we have so much of it.

  • @toolworks People do use Chin wag, of course they do.

  • @PeterStoreysbutler You must live in the 1940's! Or North London.

  • @toolworks Wrong on both statements chappy but all good.

  • @PeterStoreysbutler Or maybe you are over 50? I just can't seem to believe that Brits say chinwag! I ain't heard it.

  • @toolworks ive never ever heard chin wag...ever, but to be fair i live in the north east of england and we dont sound posh in the slightest

  • @bladeclanhalo3 That is what i'm saying! I was raised in south London, moved to Essex and have relatives all around england (including the north east) where i have visited. Yet i haven't heard this word either!

  • @toolworks Wrong again dear boy. I'm 32 so there you go. You say you "don't believe that Brits say chin wag" which implies that you are not from these fair isles (but you are still willing to doubt it)? Interesting.

  • @PeterStoreysbutler Born in London, live in Essex, family in North and South and Wales. Maybe I block out annoying words and brainwash myself into forgetting them.

  • @toolworks Thanks for giving me your life story Petal. I await with baited breath to another interesting comment in my inbox from the man i have somehow managed to enter a debate with, about whether chin wag exists or not. Or whether I'm 50. Or from North London. Fascinating stuff.

  • @PeterStoreysbutler I got it! You must be a homosexual.

  • american slang is not just fucking ebonics thanks...

  • @itswaynebradyson1 Exactly.

  • @itswaynebradyson1 Black slang is the only "cool" slang anymore. I don't think "white slang" has been updated since the 40s.

  • @itswaynebradyson1 And British slang isn't just outdated old words like "chin wag", but you don't hear us complaining.

  • When do we say chin wag?!

  • god bless america

  • he kinda looks like ROCCO SIFFREDI :-)

  • whaaat? house has an accent?

  • @RockinRockstar4ever I cant BELIEVEEE you dont know this. He used to be an english treasure. Watch a bit of fry and laurie. him and stephen fry were a proper little pair. watch Jeeves and wooster if you want to see him at his most english :)

  • Im english and I knew all of the english ones but none of the american ones (which is to be expected haha).

  • Comment removed

  • ....I did'nt know either... do I win a muffin? :D

  • Dori <3

  • i didnt know he had an accent?! lol

  • He sounds like an entirely different person. It's not just the accent his voice and everything has completely changed. I don't even know who you are anymore!

  • "We definitely don't have those..." in reference to ba-donka-donks.

    Lmao.

  • i watch house ALL THE TIME and this is sooo weird to see him 1 being nice and 2 british!!!

  • Lol, I didn't know he was British! :o

  • @serenaisgood And you know that the director saw his casting video (made on a bathroom, while he was on Fly of the phoenix filiming site) said "he's perfect, a real american actor" (or something like that). He didn't know that Hugh was british.

  • press 9

  • The British ones would be easier to figure out without ever hearing than the American

  • I didn't know any of the British ones.....

Flossing means something completely different here lol....

Ad of course every American should know wat shawty and ba donka donk means lol...:)(I'm American)

  • I'm sad to say, I only know everything about the Brits because of my friends on Xbox :(

  • @PepperDr94 ..at least you have friends :(

  • @YzdaRumGon LMFAO I'll be your friend ;)

  • just Hilarious.... lollxxxxx though i knew the meaning to Shawty only,,,,,

  • I'm English. So here's what I thought they were:

    Flossing - A g string giving you a wedgie.

Badonka-donk - Something a clown says when you step on one of his extremities, such as feet or nose.

Shawty - Short heighted girl who is promiscuous.

    lol

  • "I would be chuffed to bits by your ba-donka-donk, for example"

  • I'm Australian and I got all these right..

  • I didn't know he was British...

  • This isn't accents, this is slang.

  • @domnal , i'm sorry. I do agree with you, that is a good point that i have never considered. Thank you!

  • she cant even say shawty right lmao. she sayin shorty.

  • Chuffed To Bits??? LMAO

  • I didn't know much of these

  • He has a bit of a lisp I must say!! lol love him!

  • British accents do not sound normal to Americans.

  • I thought Shawty was slang for "shorty" haha / sweden

  • @SUPERMANgoesEMO - I'm thinking that's where it originated from, and then morphed into the meaning it has today. I'm an American and I thought it meant shorty as well, so we're both out of the loop! lol :]

  • Ba-donka-donk... I laughed really hard at that....

Mostly cos of Jeff Dunham. :D

  • The Irish accent isn't even a British accent to correct several posters here... Ireland is not a part of Britain. And obviously within ireland there are dozens of accents, much like I'm sure there are in England, Scotland and Wales and of course the US.

  • Shouldn't it be "English accent vs. American accent"? There's a ton of different accents in Great Britain... I love Hugh Laurie btw!

  • There is no such thing as "the" british accent, or "the" american accent for that matter. And this is not about accents, but slang words.

  • Lol I didn't even know some of our slang, american.

  • Hilarious!
