according to zachary27's ehra lessein 100-340kmh GPS vid of mclaren f1, the mac accelerates in 100-300kmh in just 15.3s (= 0-300kmh of 18.5s) and 100-322kmh in 20s flat. 100-200kmh is about 4.6s (7.9s) . In this vid too the mac is vastly faster topend than any test.In the time acutocar quoted to do 300-322kmh (6s), this car is already at 333kmh.
Mac is alot faster than any test has reviewed it so far.

Second, yes Top gear is an entertainment show, but the point im making is that the Mclaren has nothing in the way of driver aids, so its performance is going to vary hugely depending on the driver. Why is everybody claiming the Bugatti is more practical. McLaren F1 was a drivers car and it was a road car with out any intention of being a race car. Veyron may be very fast and stuff but you have to put in a special key to lower the car in order to go to topspeed. McLaren also has a boot the size of a for fiesta, can seat 3 people, has better over all visibility and has a modem to tell the company of any problems.

Remember it has AC, sat nav, radio and 2 seats! Plus air gets thicker the faster you move so you need lots more power just to go from 240mph to 250mph.
no, he didnt hit the gear limit, the car simply lacks power to go faster. Another gear wouldnt change a thing but only make things worse since the car would drop in RPM and thus out of its optimal powerband which would cause the car to slow down.

mass is only relevant for acceleration. but more or less irrelevant for top speed (maybe aside from the friction between tires an tarmac which will be a little bit higher because of the car's weight). but the way more important thing to top speed is aerodynamic drag.

bugatti (not SS) 0-400m is 10.3 @ 142.9mph, so how can 0-150mph (240kmh) be 9.8s?
Bugatti SS 0-150mph is ~10.3s (1/4 m 10.1 @ 147.9mph)
Real figures more likely closer to 11.xs. only 1s faster than mclaren f1 12.8s.
And if you see how fast this mclaren f1 accelerates from 270kmh, it beats even the veyron SS.

no. autocar is my source for both results. Their result is the data taken from multiple tests from opposite direction.
The point is, the best mclaren f1 result is within 1s of the worst bugatti veyron test result, which meant that topgear may be possible.

@worgulon I am sure you are aware of e=mc2. It says the mass increases with the speed of the object so greater energy is required to push it further. So in this case mass matters.

Why is everybody claiming the Bugatti is more practical. McLaren F1 was a drivers car and it was a road car with out any intention of being a race car. Veyron may be very fast and stuff but you have to put in a special key to lower the car in order to go to topspeed. McLaren also has a boot the size of a for fiesta, can seat 3 people, has better over all visibility and has a modem to tell the company of any problems.

you must think the bugatti isnt made for raceexperts, it has a lot of electronic in it to control the power and also the bugatti sure isnt at its limits, i think it could reach more power easily.. BUT 1. The bugatti is made to last more than 200000km and not to blow up after only a few thousand km and 2, people who buy the bugatti arent any people who can handle to drive a 1000hp car without computercontrol: i dont like the bugatti but its made for everydaylife not for pure power

@BrunoAlexanderSilva no. Thats partly the reason but remember that the buggati veyron is 2 tonnes because, unlike the mclaren, the veyron was designed to be comfortable! Remember it has AC, sat nav, radio and 2 seats! Plus air gets thicker the faster you move so you need lots more power just to go from 240mph to 250mph.

Technically, the F1 is still the fastest naturally-aspirated car. No other car could reach 243mph without turbo/super chargers.

no, he didnt hit the gear limit, the car simply lacks power to go faster. Another gear wouldnt change a thing but only make things worse since the car would drop in RPM and thus out of its optimal powerband which would cause the car to slow down.

@kzruns Yer right, forgot to mention that it also needed more horsepower. The air is thick at those kinda speeds, benefit for the F1 is its weight. Much more lighter than a Veyron, for example. So this raises my question; What does the Bugatti make so fast, it's sheer power or/and the total mass to cut through the air at that speed?

mass is only relevant for acceleration. but more or less irrelevant for top speed (maybe aside from the friction between tires an tarmac which will be a little bit higher because of the car's weight). but the way more important thing to top speed is aerodynamic drag.

@kzruns sure..but 1000 hp plus aerodinamics compared to this humble m5 aspirated engine...don't need to say more do I ;) man bugatti is NOT near what it should do in such power envelope...take a look at our US cousins with only 900hp doing 415 km/h and could go faster...so in my humble oppinion, bugatti=rubbish ;)

If you think that's a quick car the new mclaren out drags the f1 upto 180-190 mph or something and easily out performs it threw the corners,an f1 costs upwards of a million plus pounds for me I'd sacrifice the 30mph top speed difference buy the new mclaren and with the change left over I'd buy a 2nd hand veyron. You'd have cars to you can use everyday then.
