The only job the secret service has is to protect the president and to chase those who counterfeit money. They dont patrol the streets, enforce public law, or do property protection unless it is in conjunction with the diplomat to which they are assigned.

@STARZFAN31 that's typically when you'll see one. They have them on Capital Hill. They are not patrol just guards like the FBI marked are. They are the Uniformed Division of the Secret Service. For example, there were tons of Uniformed secret service during Ted Kennedy's funeral when they stopped at Capital Hill

@STARZFAN31 Well, they're different. The Uniformed Branch of Secret Service actually patrols some areas in DC along with MPD. US Capitol Police do the same on Capitol Hill but I'm not sure who covers a larger area. Both are mobile and stationary. A lot of Federal Officers provide visible security but don't necessarily patrol. US Mint, Engraving, Library, etc. They aren't like the Secret Service people usually think of, who are pretty much plain clothes in unmarked vehicles.
