  • They really pull off the vintage camera look well. I don't like the song, though. :(

  • I love how this video looks old, but not the windows movie maker kind of old.

  • It is a nice song, altrough they remind me strong of Camel , Moonmadness era, altrough this is not an offence, and there is nothing wrong with it,

  • @willy1957 lol there is nothing offensive about saying some band reminds you of Camel. It's an honor, and I can see where you're coming from, although this reminds me more of modern prog like Opeth and Riverside.

  • This is such a great song!

  • buenisimosss

  • Another gem by a fantastic band!!!!

  • And it is also true that progressive rock scene is a little bit too pretentious as to this beauty obsession, with some exceptions in the subgenres. That is kind of what I dislike and appreciate alike.

  • This is more or less an idea of what Katatonia should have done with their last promo video.

Love both bands to extreme respect nevertheless ;)

  • I think the reason why we loved Beauty And The Beast when we were kids is because in the end that "beast" is "beautiful" too. I respect your opinion, but I'm completely inflexible in this point: Art is about beauty.

  • This song is about surviving a painful relationship that you didn't want to end, but the other person did. The men in suit chasing the singer represent negativity. If you stay in a negative place, you attract it. If you can see beyond it everything, while not being positive, you can, and will move on. Great song and video.

  • Très très belle chanson maudit bon vidéo

  • Take the example of Porcupine Tree, they always were an amazing band and but remained underground for an entire decade. Then one day they release an album with some emphasis on the fat guitars and they become famous... While Anekdoten in the early 90's released some of the most agressive and monstrous (but not necessarily metallic) music in prog rock history and they remained underground.

  • Stop comparing them to Opeth, please! Anekdoten are NOT sellouts. Metal is commercial music. Progressive rock IS NOT.

  • this song sounds exactly like parts of Opeth's Damnation album, which is a PROGRESSIVE ROCK album. so all comparisons are appropriate.

  • First, yes, Damnation is a progressive rock album but i think that Gravity is a better album. Second, the chord progression is very similar to Hope Leaves, but this song creates a much more epic and dreamy atmosphere. Third, both records are from 2003 so I don´t think Anek stole anything from Opeth. I like Opeth's metallic stuff but metal isn't art. Progressive rock is art, so I prefer to satisfy my angry and sick side listening to Vemod and Nucleus.

  • Gotta love opinions.

  • "Metal" is a concept too wide to be labelled one way or another, I wouldn't call Demilich commercial.

  • Much of the width that you say metal has, is based in putting fat guitars (those that don't let us hear the bass) and growlings in any musical style. Metalheads are repressed music lovers, they need to disguise beauty with fat guitars and growlings. They don't accept they love beautiful music. Progrockers does accept they (we) love beauty, they are honest with their feelings. Art is about beauty, and we (progrockers) are not afraid to admit we love it. Sorry for my bad english.

  • Then I have to question how deep your knowledge of metal really is, since from your description it seems that you're reffering to a very narrow concept. You should know that the metal underground has bands that cover all sorts of styles and feelings, even metal that is frail and emotional and not brutal at all. And I love progrock too by the way.

  • Well, when i was a metal fan, I knew underground bands. The latest underground bands I discovered in metal scene were In The Woods and The Third And The Mortal, and I still like them. But since progressive rock is my main genre, I don't know almost anything about metal underground. But I think that a musical genre can be judged by his most representative artists.

  • But, to be honest, the thing that drives me crazy (and motivated my first comment) is the fact that the essence of prog rock is its intention to be beautiful (no matter how dark it could be) while the essence of extreme metal is its intention to be anti-beautiful. But nowadays it seems that every prog band that wants to get some commercial success needs to include some metal (particulary extreme metal) elements in its music.

  • Don't you think some metal bands might be aiming towards another form of beauty, just not the *nice* beauty ?

  • If you are talking about extreme metal bands, no, I dont. I think extreme metal was created to be anti-beautiful and then, anti-artistic (that is very different to be in the dark side of beauty). To include extreme metal elements (growlings mainly) in a musical style that tries to be beautiful is to me very contradictory.

  • It always lies in the eye of the beholder - I truly love Ikuinen Kaamos, Ihsahn(the Emperor vocalist's solo stuff) and Ne Obliviscaris. Those are three extreme metal bands and I would like to recommend them to you. I don't mean to convince you of something, but I would like to state, how beautiful and thoughtful(without being pretentious) extreme metal can be in my opinion.

  • I agree with you, although you got -6 down thumbs.

"Beauty is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning, or satisfaction."

I can freely admit that there IS indeed pleasure in the disharmony, the distorted, asymmetrical and the grotesque.

This is purely a socially constructed and, moreover, individually modifiable concept.

The point is in the "meaning" which also brings about aesthetics and beauty.

  • Beauty = pleasure? Really? I´m not sure about the English definition of "Beauty". But the official Spanish (I'm a Spanish-speaking person) definition of "Belleza" ("Beauty") talks about SPIRITUAL delight/enjoyment/pleasure.

I must admit that I do enjoy Opeth's "harmonized" grows (as opposed to "out of tune" growls - think of the first In The Woods album, for example, which I don't enjoy at all), but that enjoyment is a morbid pleasure and I think of beauty as something lofty/noble.

  • I see what you mean about metal being anti-beautiful, but i see it as being anti-balanced. I see Most rock musicians(including progressive) to be sitting in the middle(balanced or natural) with metal and pop music as opposite extremes. My favorite music, reggae, is very expressive and beautiful, an can compare it to pink floyd, elp, king crimson, etc in that way.

  • Compare Univers Zero or Shub Niggurath (prog rock bands) with Winds or Rhapsody (metal bands); your oversimplification only hurts both genres. Additionally, if art was only about beauty, or perhaps more specifically if beauty was only as shallow as you make it, Western harmony would never have developed to the point where a song like this could be written with all those suspensions and appoggiaturas, let alone a vocal style like the one used here (we'd all sing in the bel canto style).

  • First of all, excuse me for my English. It doesn't make justice to this debate, but I'll do my best to explain my point of view:

About the bands: I like Univers Zero, don't know Shub Niggurath, have heard the first Winds album a long time ago (2003) and wasn't really my cup of tea and was a Rhapsody fan when I was 15/16 years old (2000/2001) especially their first 2 records.

  • Despite the fact that the members of Winds came from black metal bands, there is nothing in your comparison that make me think of extreme metal (the point of my approach is the difference between extreme metal and prog rock or any other kind of artistic music).

About me: If you judge me an "oversimplistic" person, it's ok, I can live with it, but I think I could explain it in a better way in the following point:

  • About art, beauty and my oversimplistic perception of them: for me it's all about what the artist or so-called artist means, about what he/she intends. What is the intention you expect from a true artist? To enchant you, to break your heart? Or to make you feel a "rebel" by horrifiying your parents? Come on!

  • If you ask Slayer or Venom (pioneers of extreme metal I think, correct if wrong) if they consider their music art or beauty, then they probably give you a big laugh as a reply. I don't think they reply you something like "yes, our music is such an unconventional kind of beauty that "oversimplistic/shallow" people can´t understand". Come on!

  • About musical styles: Yes, you can find a lot of similarities in harmony between some prog rock and extreme metal bands, but in contemporary/modern popular music the main elements that express the intention of the artist are sound production and vocal style, not the harmony or the arrangements.

I tend to like better the rock/pop kind of vocals than classical/opera but I find in both the intention to be beautiful/artistic.

  • This song reminds me of planet caravan from black sabbath

  • this band reminds me soo much of Opeth but with there own twist on it.

  • The atmosphere in the vid looks a bit like in Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii. So cool!

  • Nicklas generally looks like he's a sad guy,but I've met him in Italy and he's really cool and funny !

  • Gött å se er på tuben, masjävlar! Fin låt som bara växer. Lite a hard days night över videon. Anekdoten på badtur är väl inte så upphetsande, men det är ju svårt det här med videor. ska kolla vidare på nucleus nu. Där lär det bli mer drag under galoscherna för en förmoda!

  • great!

  • The song Hope Leaves by Opeth comes to mind when I listen to this.

  • right! same chords here.

  • Why is Nicklas so sad?

  • My first time hearing them... I can't make a decision yet, pretty cool though.

  • We are waiting for a new video clip ! A Sky About To Rain could be an excellent choice :)

  • One of my favourite tracks of one of my favourite 90's prog bands.

  • mmh very good

    it is progressive rock?

  • Det är precis som om att det övergår ens förstånd - detta flöde, som man inte förstår... allt kan dra åt helvete, och sen när man är där så ska man ändå ut igen - in igen. Den snudd på heliga klangen tillängnar jag isådanafall dig just nu

  • Here I am again. Watching this just about daily of late. Sometimes twice...

    a blue whippoorwill sings

on the other side of the rain

  • exelente cancion y video ... cheken un video echo por mi en MI PERFIL UN VIDEO LLAMADO :::ANGARMIES

musika y todo echo por mi OK:::

  • It sounds like the mellow Black Sabbath stuff, a little Amon Duul II, as well. Love that Mellotron!

  • gravity is the best because crimson's influences are totally disappeared

anekdoten play his own music now

  • remember anlagard, white willow, landberk and anekdoten in the 90's . progressive rock was scandinavian.

now, with taipuva, kaabel, OSC, scandinavia is space rock

  • I really liked this! Excellent, moody and beautiful!

  • Excellent song!

  • Someone linked me here and told me this band is Death Metal. I am sad :(

  • Hahahaha, you got PWNED, Kurt! XD

  • Is not Death Metal, just are influenced by bands like Opeth. Anyway I like this band =)... of course the link is wrong.

  • A great song and a beautiful album. The gooey Mellotron is everywhere and "weeps" all over the place. So many prog fans have short-sighted this release because of the shorter song lengths and absence of those Crimson/Red surges, but they have definitely found their voice and every song on GRAVITY has a beauty not found in their earlier releases.

  • wonderful to see Anekdoten on here! I absolutely love this band. although, this album (gravity)was very dissappointing.... I would love to see some older video footage of them in their earlier days.
