@pennybunnie American films becoming popular is not related to intelligence. Avatar and Titanic are the two highest grossing movies of all time. I wouldn't call either of them thought provoking (unless you count the obvious metaphor in Avatar). Popular ≠ intelligent. But intelligent Americans do exist, I've met them. Australia's not any better though. We like to think we are, but we get manipulated by our pollies because we're all too busy getting pissed and watching the footy.

So true. My entire extended family live in Tasmania and I go visit every few years for 6-8 weeks and yes Tasmania is beautiful and I love it there but MAN are my family nuts! No wonder my mother married a Brit and moved 12,000 miles away. After 6 weeks I'm pulling my hair out and begging to go back to London.
