wow this has really made me want to go revisit Suede's music.I kind of ditched them after Bernard left but I must say that there are a lot of gems here. He is a great guitarist in his own right.
Poor Oakes, must have spent his whole career being compared to Bernard Butler, with people being quick to show hostility at him and his ability just because of what he had to follow. Whether Oakes successfully filled Butlers shoes or not, he did a fucking amazing job and fitted in incredibly with Suede's music 1994 onwards. It's the same story with Metallica, no matter how great the later bassists are, theres always gonna be those lame fans that shun their abilties just because they aren't Cliff
Oakes did well for the first album he did with suede but you have to realize that he had been making riffs since he started playing the guitar. Richard cannot make nearly the number of brilliant guitar parts given equal time as Bernard can. Bernard is a sub-conscious player and melodies just flow through him. Oakes is a cerebral player, more intentional less instinct. Both great but imho there's no comparison. Bernard Rules!
lovely. glad to see you made and posted it after the bernard one! yeah, richard was underrated. i like his guitar playing too. suede did have two great guitarists!
@rotarydialz You have to think then that all Suede songs are repetitive as is the nature of music ie, ABC etc. If you know anything about music you will understand what I'm talking about.
Butler did co write The Power, he just didn't play guitar on the track, cos he'd left by that point. Never mind solos, i quite like the guitar riffs on obsessions.
He is more of a chord-picking, raw, in-your-face, creative-bombhouse. And to arrive in a band like Suede, playing the way he did, at the age of 17 is pretty incredible. Butler must have shit his pants when he heard this young kid playing his guitar parts, and writing ones just as good as his.......Legend.
I never thought his solos were anything special. I just thought his strength came in song writing and creating some rather catchy riffs.

Richard Oakes is one of the most creative guitarists of the 90s.

His solos are extremely repetitive and lacking in dramatics. He's a talented guitarist without question.

Music on Dog Man Star was written by Butler with the exception of 'The Power'.
