The Catholics living in the Caliphate (the parts of the Peninsula under Moorish rule) called it Matrit, which was pronounced and then officially called Madrid by the Castilian conquistadors.

I was there this summer in june, dont go on july or agugust is to hot plus the city is empty, the food is so good, jeez i want some paella. I dident expect the mix of new modern skyscrapers with such an old city, amazing so much culture a must see!!

I live in New York City and when I visited Madrid last year I was very impressed. Beautiful city , but the people are a little on the standoffish side. I would still recommend this city as a must to visit.
