0:37 ..... What the HELL???? besides the fact she's not at the right age for the part, this woman doesnt look a thing like coraline!!even I look more like coraline!!! (ok, sorry that was me pitching a fangirl hissy fit. i gues i was really determined to be the first to direct a Corline on broadway (if there's a fullscale broadway play of Nightmare Before Christmas i'm going to cry i_i ))
@isolationeitheror I met him after one of his shows a few years ago.I was nervous as hell (after all,he is my favorite artist) and when he walked out the door he smiled and shook my hand.We talked for a few minutes,it had to be the most exciting time of my life.So no you are wrong,if you want to meet an asshole.Go work for a place that has alot of concert venues,i did back thru the 80's and trust Stephin Merrit is no asshole compare to some of the people i met.
@MidnightinSavannah well i trust that you know what you're talking about being obviously older than i am but he seems horribly pretentious, bitter and angry. I was speaking about this interview specifically where he cuts down this young man so hatefully. If he was so damn irritated he shouldn't have done the interview at all....anyway i hope you respond to this and maybe we can come to a complete agreement.
@isolationeitheror Back in the 80's people said the same thing about Gary Numan, which he suffers from asperger's syndrome which basically means he have trouble interacting with people. And again Numan is one of the people i have met and enjoy talking with the guy,he was cool as hell.I would love to sit down with Stephin and pick his brain and see what he is all about.
I just bought the CD the other day and fell in love with the music. I would have loved the see the show (I read the book years ago, and I need to get my hands on a copy to re-read it). I can understand some of their casting decisions and such... Hmm... I wonder if, years from now, the rights to the show would ever be available, so small theater groups or schools could open the world of Coraline to their communities... Just a thought.
i have to agree. I'm a major coraline fan - like MAJOR fan - but this video was nonetheless boring. Anything that can make my favorite movie seem boring needs to be burned.
no shit sherlock, but it also makes the movie appear to be boring, you know since the movie is kind of based after the book? Jeez man give me some credit.
@Mashuga31 the book is a masterpiece. an original and inspired piece of art. the film is a watered down, child friendly version. I can't believe Neil Gaiman approved of it.
I honestly don't think you believe that, otherwise it would imply that you have yet to watch the movie. There's a deeper meaning than just childish entertainment. The book had a certain element that drew in the reader, but the movie added more. It opened up a whole world of curiosity and follows the genuine interest of adventure and exploration that we all harbor. If you couldn't see that then I do believe you went into it with the wrong mindset.
I want to see this, just because of Stephin lol. No, it's actually kinda interesting with the actors and it sounds like a good show. Will it ever come to the UK, I wonder?
People shouldn't give thumbs down to those questioning the casting decisions. They are perplexing, even if some artsy village-types see them as "original and inventive".
An older woman playing a 9 year old is a tad creepy to most, especially to youngsters who identify with Coraline as a piece of themselves.
When I was 10, I wouldn't want to watch Charlie Bucket as a 50 year old man & Wonka a woman in some "Charlie and the Choloate Factory" revamp, especially for $65 a ticket (cheap seats).
Didn't you watch the video? They say it's about IMAGINATION. Plus, the show is not intended for small children. The book is, yes, but the musical is more geared for adults. I've seen it twice and I plan to go a third time. I loved it sooo much. I was very VERY dissapointed the first time I saw it simply because of the casting choices, but then when I sat down and actually thought about the production, it all came together in my mind and I actually understood the reasoning behind their decisions.
It was inventive, sweet, seductive, and so true to the book. as a huge fan of the book, it was delightful to see moments that I loved from the book that didn't appear in the film (coralin calling the police was fantastic! The final confromtation with the other father which was easily the most horrifying part of the book...brilliantly done on stage, and the rat's rhyme). The show could use a couple little changes, but it's really well done and so well performed!!
I'm not going to lie, after I saw it the first time, I was furious. I thought the whole thing was ruined just because I was so shocked at all of their choices. Then, I decided to go back now that I knew what was going to happen, and I loved it a lot. It is very different from what is expected, but the show really isn't bad at all :-)
I saw this on Saturday and it was just wonderful. Sure having a middle-aged woman play Coraline was at first an odd choice, but so is a man to play the Other Mother. And yet, they were both fantastic. I can't imagine it done any other way now. The staging and casting was ingenious.
I know, it is a crazy idea, but to me, having a middle aged woman playing the part of coraline is actually really cool. Its part of the whole message. I loved the show :-)
On the back of the movie case in the description doesn't it say she was 13 years old not 9

Totally agree with everything you said :) I loved the production!

I'll admit that it doesn't much capture the mood of gaiman's book.
If you take it as it's own entity--aside from the book--it is a really good show.
It is an excellent example of off-beat, artistic, indie-type experimental theater. You just need to open your mind to new and different things.

i really just dont get this.
i mean i understand theyre probably trying to promote diversity
but really?
a middle aged woman playing a 9 year old?
a man playing a very big and deep role of the other mother?
that is just a really stupid decission
sorry this is just my opinion
i feel theyve ruined neil gaiman's masterpiece

I saw this last weekend too. I loved it!
It was amazing. I agree that they made some odd choices, but they totally sold them; they made their choices work in a brilliant way.
And a shout out to January LaVoy (coralines mother, miss spink, others). I was talking to her after the show, and she is just awesome.

I'm going to see this next month with my daughters, but yea, why didn't even find a cute little girl in her 20s or something for Coraline?
