A great video. Thanks for this. I came to Vietnam in Jan 1988. I own a business in Sagion. I entered RMC Duntroon in 1969. I graduated into the artillery (I08 Fd Bty, 4 Fd Regt, Townsville) at the end of 1972, after 4 years of training to go to Vietnam, just in time to miss the War (and to enter a useless peacetime army). I did later serve 2 peacekeeping tours, but hardly the same. I finally left the army after 16 years' regular service, mostly with the mighty Aust Int Corps.
After French lost DienBienPhu in 1954, HoChiMinh opened Land Reform in 1955, Ho bastard killed 750,000 innocent civilians, because they were rich, vast land, big house and gold. Later uncle HoChiMinh pushed one million young men to fright in the South, during TET 1968 Ho ordered to kill and bury a live 5,000 Hue citizens.
Anyone who served in that war from Australia has my eternal respect.
I served at that time in the RA Inf, but never got to the sharp end, although I sure tried.
We all owe those men and woman the respect they deserve and did not receive from Australian governments, especially Labor governments and the unions who refused to even send them food, ammo and their mail.
i cant really help but pinch a little tear now and then when i watch vietnam war storries and Read all the Comments from people who acutally were in the war! U guys Cant get respect enough!"
Australia is about the only ally the US has that is worth a damn. The rest see no threat, hear no threat, speak no threat. They see the world with a shortsighted and national or at best regional perspective. Do you really think the Germans will come and help if Korea lights on fire? There are only a handfull that carry the weight of security, this world order, that all western/industrial free nations benfit from. Australia is one to shoulder her share of the burden, one of the "few."
My dad lost two uncles in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916. One at Hill 60 Ypres, and the other on the north edge of Moquet Farm on the Somme. Both places any Aussie should know. I play the Flowers of the Forest every Friday for all of them.
I hadn't thought about the negative side of the news to be honest. I guess my dad did....but he turned 90 yesterday and can still recall his days in WW2 as if it were yesterday. So I suppose he was trying to protect our then innocent minds.
Again I have the utmost respect for our armed forces...regular or those that were drafted. those that made the ultimate sacrifice will always be remembered.
born in 58...I was too young for the call up for Vietnam. but I still remember the news items each night about our brave guys in vietnam. My dad having been through WW2 was a little anti we kids watching that stuff at the time but taught me to have the utmost respect for our arm services people. I still carry that respect.
@bmgtz unfortunately the news media in aus was as bad as the USA was, it made out that all kinds of atrocities and other stuff went on , the civillian population had no fear of 99.9% of any side but there own as is the case in every war/conflict , not all were as called in aus national servicemen , but as the USA was you will find there was more regulars there
I was born in 1981 i'm a Texan, fought in Iraq 2004-2005 my dad fought in Vietnam 1970-1971. I have nothing but luv for all Vietnam vets, thank you Australia you guys always on our side no matter what you guys are great Allies. Also I'm living in Brisbane right now wonderful city
I was born in 1968 so obviously I dont remember the Vietnam War when it happened but I have learnt a lot about it as I grew up and have the highest respect for those soldiers who fought there and all the Aussie soldiers who have fought for our country before then and since then and those currently serving us now.
Good vid. Respect to all who fought clean and were men. And , yes, I dont see any animosity living here in Vietnam for the past. The Aussies and NZ'rs held their heads up high and were not soiled by the My Lai's and the Hue's that occured as far as I know. Lots of good old Aussies living here now and loving it.
As an Aussie who often visits the Mekong, I have had the opportunity to meet ex soldiers from both sides, VC, AARVN, & US. It amazes me how they all appear to have now found peace within themselves, particulary the marines who have married Vietnamese and reside in Vietnam for extended periods of time. Best wishes to those that have yet to put the bloody past behind them, and God Bless them.
@gonygulu It's always the soldiers that forgive and forget soonest. If it weren't for their governments forcing them into conflict with each other, there'd be no animosity between peoples.
@chadberry75 Nope youy guys not there were quite a few canadians that enlisted in the US Army during Vietnam. Also you guys doing some good work in Afgan
i was only born 20 years after this war, i just read paul hams book on vietnam. I would like to day that the diggers did an amazing job, shame on those protestors that had not researched into the subject b4 setting on the diggers. they would have hung there heads in shame if they knew what the real situation was. also good vid.
@Kokoda144 The same thing is happening now. The same situation and the same public response. Ive been spat on for going to afghanistan. Spat on for building schools , fucking irony is hilarious.
God help me... I really love that song. No pun intended.
It is one of those bloody details that aren't well known to us Yanks that Aussies and Kiwis and South Africans did a lot of the "dirty work" for us Yanks in many of our wars, and especially in Vietnam. Any respect we would offer to show them is damn well deserved.
In 1967-69 I was privlidged to have spent time with my brothers in arms from down-under. My mechanisim for dealing with the time I spent there was to stuff the memories so successfully that today they only come back in small snippets, in the middle of the night. But one thing I do remember is how much respect I had for those fighting men from Australia and New Zealand.
May God bless you as well as all the Mothers, Fathers, Wives and Children for the sacrifices made.
I remember back in 1970 catching a ride with a U.S. Marine and an Aussie when I went to Chu Lai to find my best friend from home. I don't know if that was the reason I deceided to go to Sydney for R&R. Anyway I had a great time there in Kings Cross. Alabama B co. 2/1 196th LIB 23rd Division
thank you for this and thanks to all our aussie soldiers god bless you all who made it home and rip to the ones that didnt make it home all you guys went through so much and for that u have my respect u have us proud to be an australian you will be rememberd least we forget
Thank you Austrilla for your sacrifice. My grandpa served in the Royal Lao Army. You guys saved many refugees also after the war.My aunt still live in Austrilla
wow, I had no idea the U.S. even had an allie in the vietnam war, especially Austrailian, makes sense though seeing how you guy's are in that part of the world.
Mate, we've fought together in every war over the past century (WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq). For better or worse, we've shared a lot of blood.

Awesome footage, mate. A real treat. Thanks for sharing. You and your mates did a bloody good job. Hat off to you. Did you ever rub shoulders with the RNZAF? My next door neighbour used to fly troops in and out of LZs, although I think he said mostly the American troops. He was NZ Air Force. Did a lot of missions.
The first images I remember from tv were of black-white news broadcasts on our old rank arena tv on the 6o'clock news. mum bought a colour one as soon as they came out in '74. too young to be corrupted by the politics of the time but glad i can look back on those images without a polluted mind and see our boys were every bit as equal to those who had gone before them.
ThankYou to our true ally during a tough go of it, Australia stood tall and is under appreciated as giving honor, bravery, and valor equal to any units serving in vietnam.
this is the first vidoe that i have seen about Oz troops in Nam! what a great video and god bless all of those men who fought and die'd ! there should be ALOT more on the Ozzy troops in vietnam! job weel done!
