@malc1976 Because they've turned horror films into a "Fun" thing and now when there is a serious film it turns people off. I don't really blame it soley on them it's more the fault of the Romero zombie films and the Friday The 13th fans that pretty much turned horror into a joke. It doesn't matter if a film is cheesy or low budget if it's heart is in the right place, the worst is a high budget film that ends up just thumbing it's nose at the cult fans.
@TheForgottenFlesh i agree with you about the friday the 13th films (and i would also add the nightmare on elm street films), but i wouldn't add romero's films, but instead all of the countless, mindless rip-offs/clones/imitators of the zombie genre.
@johnrunion Well, let's think about it. Look at the current Romero films Diary Of The Dead and Survival Of The Dead. He's become so laughably bad as a director and lazy (he's remaking Deep Red). The thing about Romero films is they always have to have some type of political aspect to the story. It ends up being the same film over and over. Fulci's films focuss on spiritualism, and more supernatural aspects which is a lot more interesting.
@TheForgottenFlesh yes, i am no fan of the current crop of romero zombie films either, but his/the original versions of night/dawn/day + the crazies are classic.
@johnrunion They are classics but very overated since the whole concept of Night Of The Living Dead was taken from Richard Matheson's I Am Legend. Also the plot of The Crazies was very similar to I Drink Your Blood. I dunno I think Romero is overrated.
@TheForgottenFlesh night also has much in common with carnival of souls and invisible invaders. day/dead also has much in common with invisible invaders. i think cronenberg may have also seen i drink your blood.
@TheForgottenFlesh Matheson's I Am Legend is hardly an original concept itself either. The historic battle of The Alamo could be seen as the basic source of inspiration for that story and it's many film adaptations as well as classics such as Rio Bravo, El Dorado and Assault on Precinct 13.
@TheForgottenFlesh I agree. I would also throw Shawn of the Dead and Eli Roth (the worst) into that camp. Roth can't help turn his films into stupid jokes.
sparsely spooky indeed, just by the trailer it's one big yawn-o-rama. but then again if it were a horror trailer today they'd narrate it really fast +corny & then add very quickly 2 REALLY scare you: "Rated PG-13." so today's underwhelming unoriginal dying horror genre's no different than z-movies of the 70s and 80s. (what with a zillion bad remakes +no new concept ideas, no/barely any groundbreaking new technique, not just in horror but all genres)
narrator sounds like a bad soap opera robot who's unaware of his stolid emotional unexpressiveness and thinks he can actually Suavely Lure you w/his voice, Warn you, Excite you, Rivet you with his "hypnotizing" voice delivery, while in reality sounding like a strangely articulate crackhead, an oddly man-like deep-voiced but spaced out, goofy upperclass-twit/intellectual bakeout.
soundfx that start good turn into shit along with a really bad narrator. the way the narrator went "night of the Living?? D e a d!.." it sounded like he was surprised that he could read or speak. reading those bogus taglines must've been overwhelming for him. NOT narrating like him or not acting like the dude who plays "Striker" in that '80s slasher, "curtains" is like acting 101. them shits fail to sound intriguing, scary or believable by sounding bombastic and wack.
this is the first horror film that i watched on video still love it to this day trying to get it on dvd but cant get it x

Read the book before I saw the film and enjoyed both. Especially unsettling and some amazing makeup fx by Tom Savini!

I remember seeing this on video back in the 80s and it sucked out loud. What's ironic is that John Russo's novel was actually pretty good.

I saw this film about 3 months ago, for the first time. Easily one of the worst horror films I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot.
