I grew up in Detroit when the radio played nothing but Motown, 24/7 period...and it has taken, finally, a Northern Irish friend to turn me on to this woman who blows the other girls away. Wow. Thank you Northern Soul for keeping it real.
I grew up with this kind of singing. Then MTV came along and every singer in the country started to do all those silly dance vids. Just get up, take the mike and sing. I'll watch!
Congratulatons all!! This is the first comment section I've seen in years of Youtubing that wasn't angry people yelling at each other!!! It must be Bettye!
I agree. I love all era's of music and I've never heard of her. Neither has my mom and she and her sisters were music fanatics from the 50's up until now.
Since i happened upon this video, not long ago. I realized that i was listening to a performer, who actually hit me just right. Love you Bettye. Thank you for this.
This woman is one of the baddest around. I saw her perform and put the audience in the palm of her hand. Whatever she sings about, you feel too. I love her as a singer, and when she is just as entertaining off stage. And yes, she is FINE! She is built like a 20 year old.
Bettye has said, "I had the choice of going on Ed Sullivan or Shindig! I chose Shindig! Last year, she finally appeared on the Sullivan stage of the David Letterman Show. Great singer, marvelous performer.
Now that's an interesting comment! I saw this episode and was so impressed that the producers booked so many soulful acts and never asked them to tone down the performance. Bettye tore the house down with this and it made me a new and everlasting fan.
Nothing compares to hearing her voice.

Amazing! What is this from? She is actually quite sedate here, compared to what she is up to these days. She is just plain nasty now.

And she is STILL putting out ground breaking music to this day. Check out her "My Own Hell To Raise" c.d.
