Small thin wings, tiny cockpits, tiny complex aircraft, everything manual, the power of 4 high powered cars; how did they get young men to fly them? And they all did it more than once.
and i totally agree. Imagine seeing 12 to 15 planes in 1940 flying over the fields firing canons in a huge doog fight. And then you look up in the sky just to realize that those 12- 15 planes were just a "part" of a HUGE armada of 30-40 planes that is now only black dotts up in the sky...
@MrJp990 Ok then, since you appear to have misunderstood my comment, allow me to clarify... The DB-605 has a single-stage variable-speed centrifugal type supercharger driven through a barometrically controlled clutch; with MW50 injection into the supercharger intake.
@Arcticviper Yes it is better actually, you are one of the few people that ACTUALLY know THAT much about the Daimler-Benz 605..... Sadl thats not the only the engine the ME 109 used :P
The whine is the supercharger, which is particularly loud on the DB engines. The Me109 is supercharged, NOT turbocharged, with the supercharger driven by fluid coupling on the left side of the engine. The Jumo series V12s had the supercharger on the opposite (right) side. Merlin V12s on the Spits and Mustangs had the supercharger on the lower rear of the engine.
Supercharging and turbocharging force more air into the engine, and yes that lets you add more fuel. A side effect of forcing in more air is heat, while a cooler dense mixture is desired. An intercooler is sometimes used to cool the mixture. More performance was possible at lower altitudes with water injection (MW-50) which allowed higher boost and cooled the mixture. Nitrous oxide (GM-1) acted as oxygen carrier at higher altitude for a boost in performance. Continued.......
Continued .....Both MW-50 and GM-1 could only be used for short periods without risk of engine damage or shortened engine life. Several sub-series of the DB605 during the war used a combination of larger superchargers, MW-50 and GM-1 to increase performance.
it has always been said that the spitfire looked like a beautiful woman and the 109 looked like a killer, its quite ironic that the merlin in the spit has that spine tingling purrr to it and the daimler benz has that howl to it like it's madder than hell, but also spine tingling.
There's a man in England who built a Spitfire out of genuine parts in his back garden shed. A WWII veteran pilot came to see it and admitted it was the real deal.
There is something special about the qrowl of a Merlin engine in the Spitfire that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Wonderful shots. wonderful sound.
Filmed in Summer 1996 when Bf109G-2/Trop Black 6 and another Me109G (Buchon conversion) were temporarily together at Duxford. Black 6 was painted in different colors for part of the filming. Black 6 is now on permanent display while the other Me109G resides with EADS in Germany. The DVD "One Summer, Two Messerschmitts" is still available.
@stutzbulldog Prefer the FW190 personally especially the FW190 A8/R2. Also the Dora 9. Still great to see two magnificent WWII aircraft being flown instead of wasting their years away in a museum
the best low pass video i ever see... serious this is so fucking amazing the combination of the daimler benz of the bf 109 and the rolls royce spitfire sound engines!
StankyUS is talking nonsense! The Spitfire I was superior in almost every respect to the Bf109. There's a huge amount of data on this - it's not hard to check before making unfounded assertions.
@hellcatdwe Depends on the models and what you're comparing. Early Spits were carburated whilst all 109s were injected: Thus, they didn't lose power in a loop or in inverted flight. Early 109s had superior firepower, not a small thing in a fight. 109s were faster in a dive.
Overall, I'd agree with you that the Spit was the better aircraft, but not 'in almost every respect'
@n52nimbus Why would the Spitfire I lose power in a loop, when it is pulling positive G throughout? It would certainly do so in a bunt, but both manoeuvres were suicide in combat. Superior fire power is debatable; cannon were effective against bombers but too slow firing for the dogfight where snap shooting was a necessity for survival, which was one reason fighters carried both types of gun. Maybe it's semantics, but 'almost' means 'the majority', and that is indisputably true for the Spitfire.
@hellcatdwe Apparently Spitfires DID lose power in loops because there are accounts of pilots complaining bitterly about just that fact. So loops and Immelmanns are no use in combat? Hmmmm. . .
Yes, the 20mm guns on the Emil were slow, but still much more effective than the .303s on the early Spits.
In the end, fighter pilots on both sides basically said that the aircraft were comparable enough that the outcome of a dogfight depended far more on the skill of the pilot.
@n52nimbus The spitfire lost power in a negative G maneuver, not in loops. This meant if you pointed your nose down you lost engine power because the gas was not making it to the engine. It was not as big of a deal as it is made out to be, the engine kicked back into life immediately once the negative G ends, and battles rarely see significant negative G combat.
Later models fixed this as well, it was a problem for 1940 and 1941.
Both have a great sound, but I am a sucker for the Merlin. The 109 sound is a more intimidating and scary kind of whine sound, while the Merlin had an impressive and deep roar. I think at an airshow where people come to watch, the Merlin Roar is more enjoyable than the DB Whine, which more than anything creates a nervous feeling in my gut, not really the feeling I am going for at an airshow.
Certainly from the ground during WWII the DB whine would have been terrifying if one was diving on you.
Well I like the jets...I liked the Starfighter and the Phantom with their J79 engine...a very unique whine sound...I loved it..I liked the C 160 and C130 sounds as well...hm maybe I loved all planes....cause I wasnt biased....the Merlin is the best engine of ww2...anyhow it was a misfit for the Buchon for example...
@Saxonsoldiers in 1940 the spit had shorter legs, slower rate of climb, slower dive, and was slower at level flight, had less firepower and was minus pilot armor in the Spit mk1. What the Spit had in 1940 was a better turning ability and better energy retention, being on the defensive over home territory was a bonus. The Spitfire did not see a better performing plane over the LW (for a short period) until the Spit MkIX, and toward the end of the war.
There is a definate difference in the harmonic resonance between the two planes. The Messerschmitt has a high pitched whine, then "phew" as it flies over you whereas the Spitfire has a deeper pitch, almost like a cone of sound, with a definate "wumph" as it passes overhead. You can hear it best at 2;00 as they pass over very close together. They both sound good, but the Spitfire has it; for me anyway.
alte kameraden together again, no bullets, good, did you know that FAF had over 300 109-g-2 and g-6's ? It is true. One of them is still in aviation museum in Tikkakoski, Finland.
Simply fantastic planes! I would like to see one time a Macchi MC202 or MC205 togheter with this two. The Macchi is also a superb plane (and the P51....).
I personally prefer the sounds of Merlin and Griffon a bit more and I am also a fan of the British and American aircraft.I like the Messerschmitt and a bit more the Focke Wulf. Really great engines, with great sounds. I like to see those two aircraft flying side by side. We have to notice that the advantages of the one were the disadvantages of the other, and vice versa, even in the sounds of their engines. Great aircraft, and deepest respects to the pilots who flew them during WWII.
I'm a big fan of American and British warbirds but I really enjoy seeing German aircraft fly as well. They both certainly have their unique sounds, and both sound amazing!!.. its a shame that some people have negative things to say or inaccurate statements about one or the other based on biased opinions.. Thumbs up to all the restored 'birds.
2 beautifull fighters! they wrote history with beauty, horsepower, guns, bullets, and blood,. these magnificient machines carrying great names johnny johnson, eric lock, erich hartmann, günter rall..... no rockets no radar lock,. just the man, the guns, and his mean machine! and today we enjoy those beauty,s! man! that whistling sound of the 109! great!!
The Merlin 61 of the Mark 9 Spit has more mil. power as the DB 605 A of this G10. Only the MW50 System boosted more power out of the 605 for max. 10 Min. Today they operate the remaining DB605 engines never with MW50 and the max. power is also limitied to app. 1300HP.
But this 109 was propelled by DB 605 D engine, not A model. Larger charger, greater boost, more power. Even out of MW-50 ithe output was larger than with the Merlin of Mk IX.
@gelbevierzehn The D engines could either be run with B4 Fuel plus MW50 for 1850ps or C3 WITHOUT MW50 for the 1850ps. If you find pics of G-10s from the war you will see the fuel requirement on the side was "C3" (100 octane). The D engine could also be modified to make 2000ps but that required C3 + MW50.. Max continuous on these engines is around 2400 but I'm sure they only run it at 2000 or 2100 to save engine life. Just like the merlins, they don't run at the max 3000 rpm 10 min rating.
Fuel injection has nothing to do with power, you can maybe gain a bit more since its a more even spray to all the cylinders but that has nothing to do with it. All fuel injection gave the DB 605 was the fact it could do Negative G maneuvers without cutting out.
I think if You would have been from the UK Your comment would be rated minus all over the place by some individuals. I personally like the DB 605, the Jumo211 or the BMW 801 and all its successors. I would love to hear a german fighter with a four blade propeller, the impression is done by the engine, the crescendo however is done by the blades of the propeller.....The whistle from the Me comes from the turbo super charger, the whistle from the Mustang is due to the barrels
I was referring to the Mustang cause it got also the Merlin engine. Anyhow, even the P 51 Mustang was designed by a German, raised in a small village near where I live "Hornbach". His name is Edgar Schmued and was born 1899, December, 30th. Well I love the sound of freedom with the Spit and the Mustang, but I love also the sound of the Me109 or FW 190. Unfortunatly these birds fought for the wrong cause, anyhow I love the sound of them
True. The 109 does look more menacing than the Spitfire. Maybe because of the squarish cockpit frame (pillbox) and the fuselage has a shark like look.
The Spitfire looks more like a streamlined racing machine than a fighting machine.
The ME-109 is sure one of the most beautiful warbirds if you ask me....nice looks with a beautiful sound....but she was not the quickest....the North American P-51...that other beauty...she was the nightmare for the Luftwaffe
This well good top bit of filming, I know is not nice but it must have been great as a small 10 years old boy in 1940 to see & hear both great planes. Both aircrews on both sides did their best. As on RAF Pilot told me once ( I was shooting down the Plane not the pilot sadly some of my rounds did kill & i'm not proud of that)
MB supercharger! Both planes are beauties! However none of them saw action in the summer of 1940, because they weren't built until later on in the war. Thank you for posting.
They need to hook these planes with the standard accouterments and do a low and fast weapons fly by test. Now that is that would be neat to witness first hand.
Good news is you can tell the difference between the DB 605 and the Merlin. The bad news is by the time you hear the supercharger the bullets are already flying.
like in airshows these guys are taking a chance on a collision that can result in 2 deaths and 2 irreplaceable planes destroyed. happens frequently.

1300HP.
gelbevierzehn 2 years ago
@gelbevierzehn
But this 109 was propelled by DB 605 D engine, not A model. Larger charger, greater boost, more power. Even out of MW-50 ithe output was larger than with the Merlin of Mk IX.
kotgustaw 1 year ago
@kotgustaw
Yes, you're totally right... The "schwarze 2", a converted HA1112, got the standard DB 605 D.
Thx.. :)
gelbevierzehn 1 year ago
@gelbevierzehn The D engines could either be run with B4 Fuel plus MW50 for 1850ps or C3 WITHOUT MW50 for the 1850ps. If you find pics of G-10s from the war you will see the fuel requirement on the side was "C3" (100 octane). The D engine could also be modified to make 2000ps but that required C3 + MW50.. Max continuous on these engines is around 2400 but I'm sure they only run it at 2000 or 2100 to save engine life. Just like the merlins, they don't run at the max 3000 rpm 10 min rating.
zontral 1 year ago
@zontral
Hi, I didn't know that.
I thought they just used C3 for the DB605ASC. I hadn't the DC on my list.. :) thx for your info...
gelbevierzehn 1 year ago
Fuel injection has nothing to do with power, you can maybe gain a bit more since its a more even spray to all the cylinders but that has nothing to do with it. All fuel injection gave the DB 605 was the fact it could do Negative G maneuvers without cutting out.

I think if You would have been from the UK Your comment would be rated minus all over the place by some individuals. I personally like the DB 605, the Jumo211 or the BMW 801 and all its successors. I would love to hear a german fighter with a four blade propeller, the impression is done by the engine, the crescendo however is done by the blades of the propeller.....The whistle from the Me comes from the turbo super charger, the whistle from the Mustang is due to the barrels
grazyarnie 2 years ago
@grazyarnie

@microbladehaiza They both sound good, i can see your setiment though lol.Spit does edge it though..somthing about that purr.

I am so grateful for this kind of footage.
It allows one to enjoy the sights (all angles) and sounds virtually uninterfered.
I love the DB605 sound. The smoother sound and the supercharger whine make it sound a bit clinical.
The Merlin sounds raspier, warmer. It shows more obviously that it is a piston powered combustion engine.
In character almost the opposite of the DB Engine. :-)

nose shot sie by side, the ME 109 looks like a killing machine, Spit looks nice also, ut those oval wings are nasty
MrBritdog2 2 years ago
True. The 109 does look more menacing than the Spitfire. Maybe because of the squarish cockpit frame (pillbox) and the fuselage has a shark like look.
The Spitfire looks more like a streamlined racing machine than a fighting machine.
junkers66 2 years ago
The ME-109 is sure one of the most beautiful warbirds if you ask me....nice looks with a beautiful sound....but she was not the quickest....the North American P-51...that other beauty...she was the nightmare for the Luftwaffe
76RV 2 years ago
That 'other beauty came in 6 years lkater than these two, yet these two could still compete and beat he P51 in many areas
Xiolablu3 2 years ago
As I recall, the Luftwaffe did not like Spitfires overmuch either. Or, come to that anything else powered by Merlins in 1940.

This well good top bit of filming, I know is not nice but it must have been great as a small 10 years old boy in 1940 to see & hear both great planes. Both aircrews on both sides did their best. As on RAF Pilot told me once ( I was shooting down the Plane not the pilot sadly some of my rounds did kill & i'm not proud of that)
R2tag 2 years ago
Oh..how sweet the whistling sound of the
MB supercharger! Both planes are beauties! However none of them saw action in the summer of 1940, because they weren't built until later on in the war. Thank you for posting.

They need to hook these planes with the standard accouterments and do a low and fast weapons fly by test. Now that is that would be neat to witness first hand.

Longnez 2 years ago
such grace yet so chilling as tools of war,
and the pilots who flew them will always be "Knights of the sky",a fitting tribute
narcopeanut 2 years ago
Good news is you can tell the difference between the DB 605 and the Merlin. The bad news is by the time you hear the supercharger the bullets are already flying.

All-the same German pilots flew many more missions than their Allied adversaries, that is why their kill scores are so much higher.
Oblivinit3 2 years ago
Plus Allied pilots were pulled out to train after so much experience.
German pilots flew until they were dead or hospitalised.
