very succinct. the officer approached his job professionally, entering a potentially dangerous situation. gates copped a racialized, disrespectful, very elitist, entitled 'tude. the officer in turn performed a petty, vengeful arrest, which is what most cops would do and i understand that. i certainly would not have spoken to the officer that way. always speak respectfully to cops. the cop did nothing even vaguely racist and would have done the exact same thing if the perps had been white.

Yes, your statements in the video are slightly misleading, as the neighbor stated in the 911 phone call that there was a man who looked "kind of hispanic" and never mentioned the word BLACK at all. I will support the neighbor although I briefly opposed her choice to call 911. But she was concerned, and she had a right to call, although it lead to a very big controversy.
I listened to the complete audio and have read the police transcripts, I found many discrepancies.
1. 911 call and Police report didn't match.
2. The cops called for back up, for an old man.
3. Gates did present his I.D. before getting arrested, at that point he was asked to come outside, to sight of 6 police cars and a dozen officers, then was arrested.
People, if you get a chance, take the time to listen to tapes and punch up the police report, the cops are on a rampage.

Neighbors who called 911 never mentioned race while reporting a possible break in. When asked about race the caller said she's not sure, one may be hispanic, and she's not sure about the other one. So his neighbors didn't racially profile him at all, the cops did and even fabricated it in their report.

I have heard the 911 call from the aforementioned "neighbor" & I beg to differ. In the recording, the neighbor was asked if the men were (quote) "white, black, or Mexican" & the neighbor's reply was one could be Mexican & she could tell about the other. That's just a simple fact of the 911 recording.

There are fundamental flaws in your argument. First, Obama did not call the cops stupid. He said they acted stupidly, and there is a distinction.
Second, the neighbor did not identify the men as "two black men with backpacks". She has specifically stated that she never mentioned race. Apparently that was added by the arresting officer.
Lastly, he was not chosen to host a documentary because of this incident as the date July 13 on the PBS website shows. He was chosen because he's a scholar.

The only thing i think you need to rethink is the initial report of the neighbor. People have called 911 reporting "white males" in certain situations. Does that mean the white people that made the call are racist and profiling against their "own" race?
I think the professor is right...The officer ignored his ID's that he presented. And what about pictures and photos in the house? The officer just decided to ignore that obvious option. It should have been over before the cuffs were put on.

she does make some thoughtful points, BUT, the whole argument about "uppity" blacks getting more media attention for racially charged situations than poor blacks doesn't hold up. the very thing that made the gates incident interesting is this point that it made: no blacks are free from profiling, rich or poor. the fact that gates holds several degrees and is an esteemed prof at a top school didn't stop him from being profiled, that's why it got so much attention.

Yes, your statements in the video are slightly misleading, as the neighbor stated in the 911 phone call that there was a man who looked "kind of hispanic" and never mentioned the word BLACK at all. I will support the neighbor although I briefly opposed her choice to call 911. But she was concerned, and she had a right to call, although it lead to a very big controversy.

I listened to the complete audio and have read the police transcripts, I found many discrepancies.
1. 911 call and Police report didn't match.
2. The cops called for back up, for an old man.
3. Gates did present his I.D. before getting arrested, at that point he was asked to come outside, to sight of 6 police cars and a dozen officers, then was arrested.
People, if you get a chance, take the time to listen to tapes and punch up the police report, the cops are on a rampage.

Neighbors who called 911 never mentioned race while reporting a possible break in. When asked about race the caller said she's not sure, one may be hispanic, and she's not sure about the other one. So his neighbors didn't racially profile him at all, the cops did and even fabricated it in their report.

Thanks for this video. You are one in a million. Your vid was posted awhile ago, so I guess you now know that the caller never said anything about the perps race per the 9/11 recordings. And so what if she did? Mentioning a perps race is a descriptive term. If someone were robbing my house, or did a crime against my family, I'd want as much description as possible. What's next? Witness a crime in progress and when asked to describe perp, you have to say: "sorry, cant tell ya; may offend someone"

Plus he has unwaveringly supported and promoted many black causes. The very way most American History is taught today has changed because of people like him. Now you know...Crowley lied on his police report after the 911 Call. Yes, it was racial profiling because Crowley said "Two Black Males" in his report, when the 911 caller very mentioned any color. Plus two luggage bags on the front porch. Ok, who is really lying?

Ms Whalen, the one who placed the 911 call is not at fault. It was Crowley the cop who interjected "two black males with backpacks." He lied in his report because the dispatcher never told him this. He had it in his miniscule mind that the perps would be black. Lastly, the person in this video does not speak for all black people, just as Crowley's actions do not represent all cops. She can only speak for herself, so don't get too excited. Black people are NOT monolithic!

I have heard the 911 call from the aforementioned "neighbor" & I beg to differ. In the recording, the neighbor was asked if the men were (quote) "white, black, or Mexican" & the neighbor's reply was one could be Mexican & she could tell about the other. That's just a simple fact of the 911 recording.
Gates has done an injustice to blacks by his actions & look how Obama reacted.
Obama screwed the dog & it can't be unscrewed.

There are fundamental flaws in your argument. First, Obama did not call the cops stupid. He said they acted stupidly, and there is a distinction.
Second, the neighbor did not identify the men as "two black men with backpacks". She has specifically stated that she never mentioned race. Apparently that was added by the arresting officer.
Lastly, he was not chosen to host a documentary because of this incident as the date July 13 on the PBS website shows. He was chosen because he's a scholar.

I really like this video.. Its good to see some black people realize that some that would be called black leaders are using racism to make themselves noticed and even rich.

First, President Obama did not say the police were stupid, he said they acted stupidly, which has an entirely different meaning. Second, the 911 officer asked were they black or Hispanic? That to me is racial profiling. Third, Prof. Gates just returned from a 15 hour trip from China, I'm sure he was very tired and not being able to open his door probably was frustrating too. Four, being a "jerk" in your own home is not a crime. Five, the officer acted STUPIDLY in arresting Prof. Gates!

Actually the lady the made the phone call, did not tell the 911 operator what race gates was, she did not know what race, the dispatcher asked her what race, she said "maybe hispanic". although I agree with most of your verbal comments, the first part is completely incorrect.

Actually, the arrest was illegal. Gates exercised his rights. Under the law police can not lawfully arrest a person for hurling abusive language at an officer.
And another point. Skip Gates has been an advocate for black people for years, so for you to suggest that he is some how trying to be down now because he got all uppity is ludicrous.

So what if she didn't say the race during the 911 call. Isn't it possible that after she hung up she continued to watch the house and got a better look at them. He was investigating a possible break in, I think he would have requested ID from anybody found inside the home to verify they didn't break in.

I do owe Ms.Whalen an apology. I jumped the gun on the neighbor thing because it turns out that she specifically was not a neighbor but only worked in the area, although the elder lady who summoned her involvement was from the area. Who was very insistent on having Whalen make the phone call. I'll leave it up to others to surmise why the elderly woman wanted Whalen to call so badly.

The only thing i think you need to rethink is the initial report of the neighbor. People have called 911 reporting "white males" in certain situations. Does that mean the white people that made the call are racist and profiling against their "own" race?
I think the professor is right...The officer ignored his ID's that he presented. And what about pictures and photos in the house? The officer just decided to ignore that obvious option. It should have been over before the cuffs were put on.
