  • i thought they were mormon

  • This is wrong, ka mate is a maori haka, I very much doubt there are any maori at byu, if they want to do something like this to reflect the polynesians in the side they need to do a war dance which represents them, ie for Tongans the Sipi Tau, or the Samoan Siva Tau or the Fijian Cibi

  • @KiwiRobbie73 agreed

  • @KiwiRobbie73 You are wrong sir... I'm maori and at BYU, and I'm not the only one!

  • @Zanymane You are one with some odd misinformations. Anyway, something you have to understand, it's a football team. Also, about half the people that go to BYU are Mormon, not all. Why do you want them not to? Also, the main reason they do it is because such a large number of the players on the team are from Tonga.

  • @baaeeleeyroosee98 You want to know why? Because a huge number of the BYU football players come from Tonga. There you go. You got it? Good.

  • I dnt understand why a American football team wld claim something that is one of a cultures icon and a countries pride as a ok thing to do before all of their games. The Haka isnt all Rugby, Our Military do it, Our Army, Navy, Police Force Do it, all our sports teams do it, from country teams to National, All schools have a Kapa Haka. We have School haka Comps, we do it at Funerals, Births, Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, pretty much for Everyting. The Haka is the New Zealand People!!

  • We are goin to kick your ass when you come down to Oxford

  • @omrebs22 lol

  • I'm sorry but there is only one Haka, and that belongs to the New Zealand All Blacks. Nice try though I do give credit there.

  • @DrummerGuy2409 Haka is a cultural thing. There isn't only one.

  • Come on. Give these guys some respect.

  • The team was asked to do this in respect for the father of a player who is Maori that had passed away.

If anyone takes issue with it you take issue with the player then.

God and family above all else. If a fellow teammate, friend, and therefore brother asked me to do this out of respect for his father I'd be so honored.

And so all of you who take issue with it... so what? Take a hike.

  • @FierceArc that's not true they do it before every game.

  • that is just oh so wrong

  • This is wrong. Even if their whole team was samoan, this is not a samoan war dance. This is a maori tradition, and it should be left for them to do. Americans manage to once again get it oh so wrong..

  • Wow.... This haka looked pretty sad huh, just leave it to the all blacks and new Zealand do the rea passionate haka... People who actually knows what it means and also it's history

  • @Bowan27 really any of the pacific islanders, nothing like watching an all black vs samoa or tonga match when they both do their hakas.

  • Sē ioe shxt if aint maori or polynesian dont do da effen haka ... I aint

Maori but i am samoan nd dese guys look stupid

  • @SuperSole67 i'm sorry i couldn't understand you. can you please try again and use something other then gibberish?

  • This is why i want to play at BYU

  • horrible

  • that guy has big hands...

  • @hakaboy6924 so u saying Samoans can't do ur self proclaimed haka? Do u know a Samoan all black who has led kapo o pango? Or even ka mate? Should all Polynesians in the AB's sit it out while piri weepu hosea gear Liam messam etc do it on their own? Think about it mate!! Ka mate is used all over new Zealand! Their are kids in the BYU team that are from here, heck even some of the poly boys are from here in NZ! so dnt be a dick about this mate!! Bloody hell!!

  • YAYEAH!

  • My bad meant to put that in the search list

  • aoetearoa

  • Samoans do not do the Ka Mate Haka as stated Samoa does the Manu Siva Tau. Ka Mate is specific to Aotearoa and is performed by the all blacks with permission from the tribe Ngato Toa tribe. Any Samoan who tells you this belongs to the people of Polynesia is wrong and this is no way to perform Ka Mate. You plagiarize my culture and bastardize my language. You want a haka to be proud of be men and write your own that means something specific to yourself dont't get on you tube and download mine

  • @Aztlan If it were not for college football there wouldn't be an NFL because all great players start at college

  • BYU was the first of the major NCAA teams on the mainland to recruit polynesians. Norm Chow, now UCLA's offensive co-ordinator, is part polynesian and a Hawaii native started it back in the 1970's. BYU had produce a pronunciation guide because of all the Samoan, Tongan, Tahician, Hawaiian and other nationalities they brought to the mainland. BYU is proud of their polynesian heritage. Now we have greats like Troy Palamalu, Jr. Seau and many others who's names I can't spell due to BYU.

  • fuck college football. NFL is where its at.

  • BYU SUCKS HAAHAHAHAHA

  • COOOLL

  • You guys are stupid. There are so many Polynesians on this team haha

  • I cringe every time I see another country doing the Maori haka. They just look like fools.

I am embarrassed for them. Please stop stealing our culture!!!

  • @nicolejana6 WELL SAID BUT THEN AGAIN THE AMERICANS AND THE EUROPEANS STEAL EVERYTHING AND MAKE IT THEIR OWN.

  • This is so freaking disrespectful.

  • Don't understand why everyone keeps asking, "why does BYU do this?" blah blah blah. do you not see the loads of comments explaining why they do the haka?? Also, considering a good half of the team is polynesian I'm pretty sure they have a right do whatever freaking dance they want.

  • @furrymormonguy yeah but don't mess it up or you just look like a poser. This is coming from a slightly flustered kiwi.

  • they should keep the white guys out

  • As a performer and expert of the Haka with a deep understanding of it and being of Maori descent i can say that i am proud of the fact that this team are doing it. They revere this haka and hold it in high esteem. They respect it. As long as they dont abuse it like making commercials or making money from it. It must be for themselves and themselves alone. Haka is not mainly for intimidation, more so for the group doing it to prepare themselves for an awe inspiring performance.

  • I wish football hakas would be like rugby where they stand directly opposite of their opponents, instead of just doing it randomly facing the crowd or something.

  • There should be culktural laws against any Americans doing any kind of traditional Maori hakas, especially football teams. What's next some UFC homos doing it?

  • @citychiro you do realize a great portion of the BYU football team are polynesian, right?

  • samoans do the siva tau

tongans do the kailao or the sipa tau

  • no they dont they do a sipi tau

  • Gives me goosebumps every time I see it. It's even better in person, in the stadium. <33333

  • Too bad their doing it wrong!

  • @SweepxThexLeg there are many forms of the haka... you understand that right? just like how samoans have like 3 different siva tau.

  • We are whanau of the Mahuikas and are saddened by thier loss, kia kaha !

@newcastleSam Samoans do not do a HAKA not in the slightest.

  • gay

  • wow i have red a few comments on here and i think its a bit sad how everyone has responded! i know people might be thinking negative thoughts about this, but honestly we should be proud that another culture admires the maori heritage! ka pai fellas! did a mean job on it!

  • haka looks mean in football pads!!!

  • ok this aint perfect but shit out of all the usless americans doin the haka i gotta say they have done a bloody good job still need to work on it but way better compared to those other ones! teno pai cuz

  • @Harpeyz666 Are all Kiwi's an ASSH*LE are you the only one!

  • fukn americans! do ur own native indian war dance! not ours! just cuz we own the world in rugby!

  • @spiderchimp like how england owns your useless land. im so sick and tired of these dark skin limeys talking shit. If nz gets into a crisses, who do you guys rely on?? enough said

  • @eatshitduckies your the country in crisis!!! who puts this whole world in financial crisis..America!cuz there broke arse greedy fukheads!and who has to support America in the war? nearly all the western world!cuz they cant scrap 4 shit, and their gana lose anyway. dark skined limey....haha,go say that to your president fukstick.. has to be a dark skin to run ur fukt up country cuz u white trash cant even run ur personal lives..and england dont own us... we own them fool!

  • @eatshitduckies not USA. We rely on ourselves and the Aussies. Ur country send wittless young men to a war where u r the invaders. Ur soldiers dont know n e thing outside their own state. They think the world is the USA. lol. There is a lot your army needs from us for your countries effort in mid-east. Enuf sed about that. N e way, USA started as an English colony outpost. In fact most of the western world exists because of england.

  • @KAHUNAGAN well our soldiers can type better english than you because obviously anyone can and the USA liberated its self from English control. It was a colony just because it was English people escaping the religious oppression and England say a way to make profit.

  • Comment removed

  • @catthtlndsonback They can type better. Is that all you can condure up. I was saving space for typing. U only get 500 characters. I respect anyone who goes to war. Just not the ones who send them with only the basics. They are fighting people who have successfully defended their country 4 thousands of years. USA is only 234 years old. N e way where was ur army when they were needed the most in New Orleans. U can send ur army to the otherside of the world but not in ur own country.

  • @catthtlndsonback Cant you see. USA is doing exactly what England has been doing for hundreds of years. Only USA has perfected it but paying the price with young vibrant men losing their lives for a cause they think is worth it. But is it really? Thousands of men have died, but how many lives does that affect back home? Have you not learnt your lesson from Vietnam?

  • @spiderchimp @spiderchimp Dude chill out. why don't you just take it as a compliment that others admire the New Zealand dance enough to do it themselves?

If you're going to have that attitude about it (do your own war dance), then why doesn't your country play it's own sports and not one that originated in England (Rugby)?

  • @AnaheimAngels24 they created it..we perfected it

  • @spiderchimp Right on :). I know the All Blacks are great in Rugby.

  • @spiderchimp is that why we havent won the world cup since 1987?

  • I agree with 10448315 about doing the haka in front of the rival team instead of the people and cameras and such. I'm don't have a lick of Tongan or Samoan or Maori blood in me but I do know part of the Haka and have need in preformed many many times, I just need to learn the meaning behind the words.

  • dude this is BS their doin New Zelands haka

  • well at least there is one player with Maori ancestry, out of a field full of albinos and fobs.

  • i wonder how many byu players and the fans know what haka is and what they represent and the story of ka mate.

also, hawaii doesn't have a traditional war dance. they just have chant but they did haka anyway. but now they have come up with their own war dance called ha'a.

  • @joonthetoon I'm sure many of them do. I've been to a church youth conference and we learned the meaning of the words while we learned the haka. Polynesian culture is a big part of many mormon communities.

  • oh ok. in that case it makes sense.

  • @joonthetoon

pretty much all of them wisecrack. Most of the team is polynesian and its not about what race you are but for the reason youre doing the haka which the BYU players honor.

  • @proudspeaker your a fucking idiot, hawai'i doesnt do the haka. they preform their own version called ha'a, get a clue you douche.

  • their are more Hawaiians on the BYU team so why not do the haka?

  • Why does Hawaii do the Haka anyway? It's a Maori dance. BYU had a legitimate excuse to do the dance, because Mahuika's relative was a Maori chief, and he passed away. They did it to honor him. I wish they still did it. It was so impressive to watch.

  • what the hell BYU is so gay HAWAII does the haka

  • posers.....

  • They do the haka because a player named Bryce Mahuikas dad is in a tribe in newzealand and his dads tribe does the haka alot or something like that.. im probably a little off but its something like that...

  • is BYU trying to make fun of Hawaii

  • A) not HAWAII.

    B) it's folklore. It's a warcry done before going into battle to intimidate your opponent. Why not do it in front of your opposing team? Specially before a rival match.. Specially when you have poly players.

  • I was just saying since Hawaii does this too and we kinda had a rivalry going on earlier in the decade.

  • Haka is Maorian, not samoa or any other culture...the rest is all biters.

  • @sM00d95 buwahaaahaha. Havent heard that one b4."Maorian" hahaahahahahaha. Thats a good one!!! I will refer to myself as maorian from now on!!!

Its Maori cuzzy!!! Nothing more "just maori!"

  • Im not saying its right or wrong. I understand completely why you New Zealanders would be upset, but i do believe every single one of them understands what it means, maybe its not their heritage but im sure they know the meaning of it. right or wrong, the whole purpose to every FOOTBALL team doing it is to get pumped up, which it can clearly serve that purpose for a team. I personally have no problem with a football team doing it but i do understand why itd upset some.

  • yeah...thats crazy how prolly bout 95 percent dont know the history or the meaning of what they are doing...its all very strange...i agree...do it right...or not at all...and if there are samoan players...they should also do le manu samoa...just outta respect....

  • @ladynajera21

"prolly bout 95 percent."??? great factual statement right there.

  • @furrymormonguy

Hey man be thankful they gave you the right to speak their language. I know a few BYU players, past and present. They don't know the history behind it other than that its a Maori war dance and again...RESPECT SAMOA!!! Let the Samoan's do their thing. This is like the UND Fighting Sioux thing.

  • Im kinda speechless bout this whole thing. As a New Zealander im wondering why an american football team is performing our haka? Samoans are not maori, its not their haka and football? We play rugby. Im LDS aswell but its not a religious thing. Im sooo confused. Fair enuff if they wanted a war dance with their own words, but the actual New Zealand Haka... makes no sense at all.

  • They had a Maori member on the team when they began the tradition. The player's father had recently passed away and teaching his children the traditional dances had been important to him. There's a decent article on Wikipedia about it called 'Haka performed by Non-New Zealand Sports Teams'

  • well .

at least they got SOME of the words right .

bet you they just took the kupu off the net : )

  • BYU fucks shit up!! Anybody hatin on them or the LDS religion can suck a dick!! Ya digg??

  • @SkeetSkeet2426 = The epitome of the world's view of America.

  • american copiers

  • BYU is known for recruiting lots of Samoans to play football for them. The Samoans do a Haka dance just like the NZ All Blacks.

  • Nah Samoans don't haka ....they do the Manu Sivi Tau....and it's not done in Maori like the haka it's done in their own Samoan language

  • @NewcastleSam not samoans...barely any samoans on the team. most polynesians on the football team are tongan.

  • @NewcastleSam Dude you're wrong,we Samoans don't do the haka; it's a Maori dance. I was born and raised in Samoa, and trust me, no one in Samoa claims the haka to be a Samoan dance. Haka doesn't even exist in our vocabulary. We do the siva tau, which literally means war dance.

  • @theephraimite Alright, I was mistaken. I apologize for not knowing the difference.

  • aye yo is dat Shilo Teo #2??

  • your an idiot poop streak, these guys are samoan.

  • I thought Mormons believed that darker skinned people were the spawn of the devil himself. Now they are trying to steal their traditions.... Other than that, I agree with the person below me that called this, "uncomfortably gay." It would not be gay if it was a bunch of Samoans doing it, but come on Mormons... Get real now.

  • This is almost exactly the same as the All Blacks Haka.

  • Awesome...BYU all the way baby!!!!!!!

  • That is uncomfortably gay. Holy shit.

  • Okay..you're right. You're gay.

  • you have no idea.

    14-13 Cougars over the Sooners.

    Cougars for life.

  • this is freakin awesome.

NO ONE has spirit like BYU.

    GO COUGARS!!!

  • oh yeah??

how about the new zeland RUGBY all blacks???

    it's their Rugby HAKA...

    ...stupid american copy

  • that is so freakin sick!!! GO COUGARS!!

  • cuz your probably haole.

  • let me rephrase that.

Hakas looks gay when they do it with football gears on, especially the haoles. =)

  • ......why.....? at least it makes sense when Hawaii does it.....it does not apply at all to byu....

  • Coach Bronco wanted something that would get the team and the fans excited for the game. Bryce Mahuika started this tradition shortly after his father, a Maori chief, passed away. At his father's funeral Mahuika led the football team in the haka, and had the idea of doing it at the football games, not only as a tribute to is father, who taught Mahuika a deep reverence for the Maori traditions.

  • well i guess in that case it makes sense... It would have been stupid if they just did it for the hell of it, but as a tribute that's actually kinda cool. I still prefer Hawaii's though

  • BYU does it because one of their players Bryce Mahuika who is of Māori descent suggested they do it.

  • @Damian2591

Maybe he suggested it but they've been doing it for years

  • Comment removed

  • thats what hes saying retard

  • thats what hes saying retard

  • Let them do it..They dont even realise that by taking this sacred NZ tradition they are placing a curse on their heads..they arent from New Zealand..they dont have the right and the mana to do this...they broke tapu...they will not do well...

  • Haka are performed for various reasons: for amusement, as a hearty welcome to distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements or occasions.

    Not sacred... silly man...

  • and as florinda90 said bryce mahuika's dad was a maori chief and he passed away. they did it at his funeral and he got the idea of doin at the games. just sayin

  • YoU Killed The Haka Maoris have been doin the Haka since Lyk ages.and then america gos along and kills it.

  • haka is bad a but byu is gay as hell

  • WHOOOOOOA dere dude i dought da useless trinity suked...but diz izz WAYYYYYYY WORSE! SHAMMMME! id rather hav trinity do it den dese guys actually id rather hav da all blaks do it! im a tongan american and i live in dat EULESS ITZ ALL BOUT DAT 817 AREA! newayz steo dnt b blamin ALL DA AMERICANZ! SHESSSSH!

  • Hey don't burn Mormons. What they do to you? And it's just the team trying to get the fans excited ( although it is an odd way of doing it)

  • They were doing it in their Rivals' stadium.....

  • they say that UH is ripping off the ALL BLACKs of New Zeland, this haka is straight off from them.

  • thats america for you

    steal an idea

    and ruin it

  • Nothing worse than watching white guys do the Haka dance. Utah squashed it as they should last year.

  • I agree with you. White guys should keep themselves busy with inventing things.

  • Didn't you guys hate niggers till it became illegal to do so?

  • I'm pretty sure they did.

  • LOL converted mormon maoris think they still have culture.

  • GO DUCKS!!!

  • I loathe University of Utards... Arrogant bastards..

  • Why the fuck are Yanks doing the Haka?

  • LOL

  • BYU sucks like crap. They do it on ute turf what fags

  • IDKVideoProductions,

BYU sucks like crap?! I've never heard of feces(crap) sucking anything.

Fags? I don't see any of them holding hands or wearing girly clothes...

  • it wasn't that bad there are quite a few maori at BYU

  • this is a disgrace to the haka

  • you are a disgrace to this world.

  • lol good one, im guessing your from BYU.

  • ha.. i'm just messin with you .. i agree there are wayyyyy better hakas out there.

  • It is. Nothing but wanna'bes. Be original. No one is original now-a-days. Gotta bite shit off other pple.

  • byu probably isn't doing the haka this year. im a huge cougar fan and have had season tix since i was one, and number 2, the guy who started the haka at byu was a senior last year and is gone. they wouldn't have anyone to lead it for this year.

  • That #2 guy is Maori. So when his Dad died, they started doing it to honor him. But the All Blacks haka is sooooo much better.

  • new zealand isn't the only place where hakas happen.

  • The mormon haka?

  • I dont want to fight #70

  • ya who would lol

  • But....This HAKA is Maoriiii!! Not Hawain!

  • hey #70 is my uncle he looks so funny on 00:24 haha lol

  • i love byu.! (:

    this year they lost..

but they'll take it next time(:

  • GO BYU!!!!!!!!!! Even though u guys lost i still love ya'll

  • What I hate is some white boy layton doin the haka in provo.I mean Utah has just as many polenesains as BYU. c'mon

  • umm no thay dont but you just think that.

  • Utah actually has considerably more minority players. Particularly black players... which is why they always beat us.
