exorcism is the expulsion of an evil spirit from your body not worshipping the devil i mean come on thats like stuff you learn when your like 9 years old bro
Carey isn't quite as up-his-own-ass as Portnoy is -- so I don't think we'll see him posting multi-cut videos of his jam sessions anytime soon. But someone with behind-the-scene access to the band should start posting that sort of stuff if it's out there!!
I would love to be quarter good of mike's playing! everytime i remind myself there are many good drummers out there, mike never stops being fascinating and prooves me once again that why I love dream theater.
If I must choose one song of DT, this is it. Love it. But I still haven't quite got the whole meaning.
I mean the man sells his soul to "The dark master" but "the fallen"(as in "the servants of the fallen")is not the dark master, right? So are there two big boss figures in this song and the dark master is making the dude fight the other one?
I agree with LOLC4T, why can't people just enjoy the music. There are also a lot of people out there in You Tube land who say I can play this, or I can play that better than he can. Or, he can't be that good because that fill was easy. My problem with most of those people is, they're not on You Tube and they have to copy everything, nobody is copying them.None of these people have made it anywhere. Mike Portnoy is among the greatest it always feels right when he plays and he has fucking power.
I think people should quit grading drummers on the time signatures they use. It's novel, interesting, and refreshing, but has little to do with playing skill.
Of course I'll probably get flames for that. I'm just sick of the proverbial "zomg dis guy plais 7/8 dood he must be best evar"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm ignorant about drummers & drumming. But...you know...if EVERYBODY (yeah, people, music critics...everybody) says that Mike Portnoy is one of the best player in the world, well, probably his playing skills are non THAT bad...and yes, i'm ironic.
I agree, most good drummers of today play in interesting time signature, Mike and Danny Carry of Tool come to mind. That being said, he's awesome.(So's Carry)

yea...wasnt portnoy the youngest drummer to be inducted into the hall of fame?... or was that neil peart, either way I dont why travis barker is in this... hmmm one hand mike portnoy, the other travis barker...oh wow, this is ridiculous
Travis Barker should not be named in the same sentence as the guy in my next sentence. Mike Portnoy. He doesn't even come close to Mike. Travis is just famous but he sucks!!!
Mike Portnoy is the god of Drums! His legend! His in Hall of Fame when his about 20+ smting or 30+ i mean.. younger drummer just like Neil Peart I think.. i just cant remember truly~ any who~ Mike influence by Neil Peart that's why 54 seconds said by ElectricClown 1 sounds a like~ ryte? hehe~
are you fucking kidding me. i think mike and neil peart are the best drummers in the world, but travis is amazing. i mean, just listen to adam's song. the guy is good.
Holy crap once again, but you can tell this was his first time in the studio in months due to how awkward most of his movements were in the first 30 seconds or so.
Very true Travis barker has nothing on portnoy, he's so good at drumming, he probably has subconsciously learned every martial arts there is in the world, so when they fight mike portnoy's amazing foot speed and arm strength will break Travis's arm and then he will heal it because he's god, and then break it again, and then he will take his sticks and stick it through Barker's legs, then break his other arm. Then travis can no longer bring disgrace to drumming ever again.
Dream theaters rhythms on this album aren't to complicated, and pretty easy to learn by heart in a short time.. the the that impresses me on the video is the fluidity of portnoy playing, and the superb timing he display. He might not play the most complicated things, but he's a powerfull and accurate drummer.. as long as he's not playing solo, they kinda suck :P
kid, the odd times and complex rythms dont make it harder to memorize...i learned the dance of eternity by heart can play it 95% with no music playin, but its still a very hard song to nail 100%
Ehm, odd time signatures can be difficult to memorize, i don't really see the point you're trying to make. And i can play the dance of eternity, thats not the point, i'm gonna post it next week or so. I'm just saying that this album doesn't have the complexity that scenes from a memory has.
okay, you try pulling of mike fucking crazy offbeat part on "in the name of god" around 1:40 in ,its fucking rediculous it still messes me up trying top play on drums
he doesnt just think of numbers and put em together, he plays by ear an feeling and it comes out that way. 5s and 7s often work well in music cause the meter 7/8 for e.g is like 4/4 (8/8) except the next bar comes in slightly early. making it a little unpredicatble nd edgy. what dt will do somethimes is say, in a 4 bar phrase of 6/8 make the say, the third bar a 5/8 to cut it short or something i.e 6,6,5,6. i know it can all sound a bit intimidating but its not really. just count the pulses

why does dream theatre have so much!!! satanism in their back tracking!.. are they demonic? ive been noticing it from like the 80's songs!

Every dream theater album has sounded brilliant in its own way. If you don't think so, then your musical palette is very narrow.
