They did a good job of drilling it into us that in the Army, you're not White/Black/Hispanic/Indian/Gay/Straight/etc.; you are all "Green". Everyone was made to have a common goal. The Army can't function efficiently with internal divisions and fractions; it's too large of an organization. So it's dealt with things like kids coming from gang backgrounds before.

Frankly, and this is from a Candian soldier, I don't mind gays in the military. AS LONG as, like anybody else, they are proffessionnal and competent in their respective trade. I must say, however, that the combat arms (infantry, artillery, combat engeneers, armoured corps) is really not the place for effeminate gay men. The military, traditionaly, has a macho mentality.
