Most cartoons or comics have a basic figure that almost all the characters are based on.
Even DC. Tim's one is B^U, fine, it works, and obviously, people like it. Oots has the stick figure template, the artist in C&H have their style. It's what makes the style Distinguishable. Even some of the worlds greatest fine artist's had a style that they worked with. It's the whole POINT of haveing a style.
One of my English teachers made great efforts to tell us that when she gave us a low grade or made a suggestion, it wasn't because "she didn't like our style". It was because, much like everyone, our papers weren't as fine tuned as they could be, and could certainly do with some appropriate feedback concerning where to improve in the future.
Not that a lot of people criticizing aren't pretty much just webcomic rubbernecking at this point (myself included).
Righting a story and drawing are similar in many ways, but they also have differences. Some people call screwing a piece of paper and putting it on a table art, and a lot of people like that. It's much more complex than that, the figures in basic human anatomy have a sensible underlying skeleton, which Buckley's characters do not; most of the time their spines are going straight up at a 90 degree angle instead of having curves anywhere. I don't care if you think xkcd has basic human anatomy down, you're dreaming a fool's fantasy.

Humans generally have malleable faces that contort according to emotion, and also gesture a lot not just with their face but with their other extremities. I have seen plenty of successful cartoons and web-comics where the faces dont fully contort according to emotion. In Johnen Vazques Invader Zim for example.
Im sure youve hurt of Tim Burton too, his characters proportions and anatomy are very off, but thats what makes them interesting.
It would be boring if all cartoons were the same. Same goes with caricatures, those are WAY off.
Cartoons used to need good human anatomy and good proportions (and artists still need to understand it), but things have changed. Cartoons are now much more exaggerated. Heads are made bigger, eyes are biggers, parts of the body can be changed and manipulated, but thats the whole idea of cartooning. Its not about making it look realistic.
Sorry to interfere dear, but I'm afraid he's right. Basic human anatomy is two arms, two legs, a torso and a body. It takes a long time for an average child to pick up basic anatomy. Many children don't learn how to draw digits on the hands until they are 8 or 9, and they will not resemble realistic hands until they are at least 11 or 12.
FYI: This is a cartoon. I'd hate to hear what you think of caricatures if you're arguing about anatomy. Or anything by Picasso at that.

Judging by everything youve told me so far you obviously know nothing about art and about cartoon art. Human anatomy applies to cartoons, yes. However you only need to draw human anatomy to proportion and properly if your cartoon style is realistic/ish. Youre beginning to embarrass yourself. Not every art style has to have perfect human anatomy.

I'm not saying it has to have PERFECT HUMAN ANATOMY, learn to read you hopeless fucking moron. I'm saying it has to have a BASIC knowledge of anatomy, and Buckley doesn't even have that in his cartoons. His drawings would be impressive if they were done by a 10 year old but he's in his mid-20s and his art style is completely atrocious and unacceptable. I know teenagers on deviantart who draw way better than he does.

Tims art DOES have basic human anatomy simply because his characters look human, and simply because they have all the major limbs etc. As much as people like do disagree, his characters also have emotions.

I don't know or care what you learned about art in elementary school, the fact remains: Basic human anatomy is NOT just having arms, legs and a torso. It's much more complex than that, the figures in basic human anatomy have a sensible underlying skeleton, which Buckley's characters do not; most of the time their spines are going straight up at a 90 degree angle instead of having curves anywhere. I don't care if you think xkcd has basic human anatomy down, you're dreaming a fool's fantasy.

Firstly, they never taught me art properly in primary school, but I did do well in fine art in high school and Im currently doing pretty well in art college.

Buckley's characters do not look human, either; "looking human" is much more than just drawing eyes and ears where one thinks they should be. Humans generally have malleable faces that contort according to emotion, and also gesture a lot not just with their face but with their other extremities. With Buckley, it's... do I have to repeat what everyone else is saying? It's just B^U, B^U, B^U.

I have seen plenty of successful cartoons and web-comics where the faces dont fully contort according to emotion. In Johnen Vazques Invader Zim for example.
Im sure youve hurt of Tim Burton too, his characters proportions and anatomy are very off, but thats what makes them interesting.
It would be boring if all cartoons were the same. Same goes with caricatures, those are WAY off.

Cartoons used to need good human anatomy and good proportions (and artists still need to understand it), but things have changed. Cartoons are now much more exaggerated. Heads are made bigger, eyes are biggers, parts of the body can be changed and manipulated, but thats the whole idea of cartooning. Its not about making it look realistic.

Sorry to interfere dear, but I'm afraid he's right. Basic human anatomy is two arms, two legs, a torso and a body. It takes a long time for an average child to pick up basic anatomy. Many children don't learn how to draw digits on the hands until they are 8 or 9, and they will not resemble realistic hands until they are at least 11 or 12.
FYI: This is a cartoon. I'd hate to hear what you think of caricatures if you're arguing about anatomy. Or anything by Picasso at that.
