European cinema has always been far superior to hollywood. This is an incredibly moving film. Saw this at The Valhalla in Sydney when it was released...
Would love to see a subtitled version of this. I don't think it's been on Brit tv, though the follow-up "Far Away, So Close" has. Does it follow the same plot as the Hollywood version: does she die at the end? The acrobats are in the secome film, so maybe she doesn't. Please tell!
I would disagree with you only slightly - your use of the word 'far' and added to superior.....may I change this to outstandingly far far far far superior. A most beautiful film....Thank you.
quite possibly the greatest movie ever made

I like the original German name better than Wings of Desire.

I've seen it years ago, and it's still one of my personal favorites. Truly haunting and beautiful

'Der Himmel über Berlin' (The Sky Over Berlin)'
- more like Heaven over Berlin, dont know why they chose Wings of Desire instead

Wim Wenders preferred the English Title. He lived in the U.S. and made some movies here.

@jgorsnapple
I know he made many more in the US, how do you know he preferred the English title (for a German movie in Berlin...?)?
Marenqo 1 year ago
@Marenqo he said so in the commentary on the DVD release of his movie.

It's not at all like the hollywood version -- this one is more like a poem in film and its setting in Berlin is important to its meaning.

one of the most haunting films I ever seen

Maybe I'm wrong, but he was a human being before meeting the children, I think.
