yes, it is the shadow over innsmoth. i liked the movie, even if it was mis-titled. i must say that "the haunted palace" (starring vincent price, based on same story ) was even more fun.
@MKdulltra have you read the poem "the haunted palace"? have you read "the shadow over innsmouth?" seriously: if you have read both of them (i have actually. i have read a lot poe AND lovecraft), i 'd like you to tell me, where you can find more things the film has in common with poe than with lovecraft.
oooops, there is one thing i forgot, not about the author but about the story. haunted palace is more "charles dexter ward" (also lovecraft). the town was called innsmouth. title:poe, rest:not
@yippieh123 What kind of an arrogant response is that. Most people read poe and lovecraft as children. At least I did. I was referring to the Vincent Price movie "Haunted Palace". It states on the box that it was based on Edgar Allen Poe. But then again, who gives a rats ass. You snotty master of useless knwledge.
@MKdulltra lol, once again: i guess it is a mixture of all three: setting: shadow, story: mostly charles dexter ward, with parts of s.o.i. and perhaps bits and pieces of poe, title: poe
The movie is alright, a tad above a generic slasher horror because of the Lovecraftian undertones, but that's all I got out of it. Check it out if you want but don't expect a faithful adaption.
This film is utter shite only worth watching for the pure comedy gold of how bad it is. Another piece of tawdry Lovecraftian film wankery, will they every get it right?
most of the H.P. Lovecraft movies are full of gore and silliness. Wish they would get back into mood, setting and sophistication. That would make it classic...
I beg to differ, mate. I enjoyed this movie and thought it to be much better than most so called CGI fest horror movies out there. This piece had passion for the source material and that's hard to come by, not a simple film made to rip the fans off but an excellent independent production of the Lovecraft masterpiece. I enjoyed it immensely.
hmmh, anyone seen this? is it good? just watched the projectilevomit inducing "Cthulhu" of 2007 (i hate t. spelling with passion) and was disappointed so could use a good mythos piece.
I think the biggest reason Lovecraft's fiction hasn't translated well to film is the fact that he spends a lot of time inside his character's minds, and that's hard to portray in a movie.
This movie is decent, but its plot borrows more from "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" than "Dagon." The Spanish village in the movie is even called Imboca, which translates loosely to "Innsmouth". My favorite Lovecraft story, btw, is "The Doom That Came To Sarnath."
Honestly, if I remember correctly (it's been a while since I've read it), there's no character development in the story at all. I believe the only character named is Bokrug. Basically, the story goes, they move up, they establish Sarnath, they don't like Ib, they destroy Ib, the priest is dead the next day with "doom" written on the temple wall, they have a party every year, 1000 years later, Sarnath goes poof. An impossible movie to make, I agree.
holy fuck ! i gotta see or buy this movie ,i've never seen a good lovecraft film ,this one looks realy good ,(maybe castle freak.. i liked that one though)
This is the only good movie based on the Cthulhu mythos. all other attempt so far are shit, it seems. I hope at the Mountains Of Madness will be this good.
Indeed! The horror universe that HP Lovecraft (+1937)created, is completely unparalled in horror writing, a genre that 'serious' literature people disregard and neglect.
As a youngster between ca. 12 and 16 years, I read everything of this strange, misanthropic author. But I warn you, reading this stuff is very unsettling, and maybe you must be a little older to begin rea
indeed he is, and i am liable to start a geek chat war about who/what is the best/coolest, personally i think the "colours from out of space" is the coolest, but i respect him liking Dagon and his spawns more
I'm with you there. Colour Out of Space was one of the best, scariest, short stories I've ever read in my life. There's a good trailer here on YouTube for a French Lovecraft fanfilm called Azathoth I believe.
The ending was the worst I've seen in long time... All that escaping, trying to safe GF....

@yippieh123 "The haunted palace" is actually by Edgar Allan Poe. Totally different author.

lol at Francisco Rabal (the old man, a great spanish actor) trying to talk in english. Maybe add atmosphere to the movie, though.
To translate Innsmouth should be Enboca, not Inboca, but thats a nice wink anyways

Haven't seen the film, but it doesn't look very faithful to the original novel by the look of this trailer :/

It's an adaption of Shadow over Innsmouth rather than Dagon, they just gave it that title.
Droohie 2 years ago
I was starting to think that. I am not sure whether to watch this film as I find Lovecraft doesn't lend itself well to film media.
It's strong points are the lack of imagery, when you then transfer that to screen, it loses a lot of its charm.
But that said, a real adaptation of Dagon couldn't be made to last more than 30 mins at best :).
Is it worth watching?

Thats because it is set in spain so they could not call it shadow over innsmouth :D
However the fictional town is called inboca which means innsmouth :D

Öhm, sorry, but thats not the story Lovecraft written.

Tim Burton should direct a classic and true to lovecrafts version of the "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"
That would be sick

That's my issue with them, ever since I watched Reanimator. It shows too much and leaves none for the imagination.

Yeah, but it would be impossible to make that into a movie. It would take a budget like LOTR, nevermind how weird it would be
