@optimist4212 That's actually v.fast, the bottom 1/2 is trimmed perfectly and the upper 1/2 that has twisted off is less powerful- reducing heeling moment keeping a flat boat- and also turns into a foil generating power with very little heel. It's a much better alternative to reducing sail...
Deck spreaders allow one to eliminate conventional mast spreaders and therefore the mast can now rotate. (If you have shrouds running through spreaders rig cannot rotate.) The idea is to use a wing mast section that improves sail efficiency.
I read somewhere that Hugo Boss was living with fashion designer Halston sometime around the 80's. When Halston was diagnosed with aids, he went to live with his sister I believe. Anyway Boss was apparently still living in Halston's residence, and the family had to kick him out, and they said he was stealing lots of things. If this is all true, it just shows that even in America, a scumbag can be rich and famous.
Any sailboat that goes very fast & surfs down waves is at risk of pitch-poling. This kind of sailing is always a trade-off between risk management and speed.
They are bottom spreaders to help support the mast. The mast on this boat is aerodynamic in shape so it has little sideways rigidity. shrouds run from the arms to the mast helping to support it.
@tincoffin , they are known as "deck spreaders" first used by parlier mounting a mulitihull mast on a mono.
they allow a lower centre of gravity for the rig package, at the expence of higher total weight and poor forestay tension (leading to poor upwind performance), a very downwind performance feature and so very open 60
@grumpybowman Very knowledgeable Thanks . Do you know if these boats have a kicker ,the boom seems to go into the foot of the mast and there is enormous twist in the sail . Not a normal set-up at all I would have thought.
@tincoffin , well observed. Deck mounted booms are quite common on open 60s, especially the wing masted ones, as this takes the compression loads from the boom away from the mast, but as you have seen this leaves no room for a conventional kicker. Different boats use different solutions to this problem, many have just used moveable strops onto padeyes or similar (not much changing course on ocean races!) or some have more exotic solutions, such as mich des' kicker track behind the mainsheet.
The sails are spilling, guess they didn't have time to hoist smaller ones.

I think (I aint an expert) that those are there for the liones to go trough to make it easyer for solo sailing.
