A Jet Assisted Take Off is a way to get planes airborne by using rockets. The name Jet is somewhat confusing, because there are no jets involved in this process, but rockets. The name JATO is incorrect, it actually should be RATO, Rocked Assisted Take Off.
@hph304 Jet engines includes turbojets, turbofans, rockets, ramjets, pulse jets and pump-jets. In general, most jet engines are internal combustion engines, but non-combusting forms also exist.
