@JRGriffey08 You're welcome and good for you! May more 20 year olds love hymns! I'm not sure if the music for this hymn is set to any other text or not. Did you all sing it as 'Come Labor On'? What church denomination? I've got another version of this with an updated reharmonization. Keep on listening to organ music and thanks for your support!
Sorry, I meant to say hymns. I have been at St. John's in Grand Haven, Michigan, Christ Church in Columbia, Maryland, and now St. John's, Naperville, IL. I love organ music. SOme people here complain it is too loud but I don't think so.
@chamberl That complaint is heard in EVERY church in America as most of those who complain know nothing about the organ, its music, or even the organist of their church. Those idiots are nothing more than a bunch of complaining cry babies! It's a good thing that I'm not a professional organist with a job somewhere as I'd tell those cry babies to either get ear plugs, turn down the hearing aid, or go to another church! Every organist has to deal with that nonsense sadly.
We had this hymn today (just the hymn part not the intro as in here). It was as a kid and remains one of my favorite (maybe my favorite) hymns. They redid the hymnal a few decades back but this hymn survived. But everyone else came to me and said "amn I can't stand this hymn" or "I don't like this hymn". Di don't know what they object to. Actualyl I do. They say it is hard to sing, but I don't see what is so hard about it. Aren't they mostly whole notes and some half notes? Great chords.
@bhigdaddymark : This is St. John's Episcopal Church, Naperville, IL. And don't misunderstand. St. John's didn't update the hymnal. The Episcopal Church did. In around 1982. The old one was from 1928. Looks like T. Teritus Noble was wrote the song in 1918. What church do you play at?
@chamberl Oh yes, I'm familiar. I'm a former Episcopalian. The former hymnal was The Episcopal Hymnal 1940, then it was updated in 1982. I thought perhaps you were Catholic, as you keep referring to "HYMNS" as "SONGS" lol! They sing 'songs' nowadays in their modern style services, in the Episcopal Church they still sing HYMNS. My son once called a hymn a 'song' and I nearly cut his head off (verbally) haha! I don't play in any church as I'm not a professional musician/organist, Just an amateur.
Yeah, it's on the CD but the intro is different (this one was improvised on the spot). The intro on the CD is quiet and slow with the 32' Sub-Bourdon being very effective. I'll send it to you.............
I had the great pleasure of singing this hymn at the OHS convention in Cleveland, Ohio. For that particular concert, we were at Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral.
It was about 400 men and 100 women, who could all really sing! (in parts too!) The organist had written a descant for this hymn, and they even sang that!
To top the beauty of the whole thing, the organ was an original Skinner!
Thank you! Sounds like the OHS convention was a blast! glad you had a good time. Did you note how large that Skinner was? how was the acoustics in the church?
Recorded during the day on a different camera. Most impressive to me is the sound quality which is far better than the 12 original recorded last year with professional equipment. This group of videos (with me in Obama t-shirt & Duke Street last stanza) was recorded with my Canon Power Shot A1000IS which has a tiny microphone in it. I spent over $200 hiring a "video photo journalist" with pro camera etc. and the sound quality sucks to all hell...........
Wow! Sounds like you got yourself a great deal with this Power Shot. I have an older power shot but I have never really tried recording much other than a conversation with my aunt.
If memory serves me correctly, it only has 2 ranks of pipes and the rest is digital. It was built by Walker Technical who only samples E.M./Aeolian-Skinner organs and usually the work of G. Donald Harrison.
It stayed open all the way the whole session. Possibly next week (if my son has time), we'll go back to record more and I intend on playing somethings very quietly and hope that the tiny microphone on my camera picks it up as this organ has beautiful strings.
God no! At this church, freedom is a real word. The organist here is one of the nicest organists I've had the pleasure of knowing. There are zero restrictions in his book...........
Amen. Love that intro. I could hear the tune in there!

I'm afraid I can't tell you how many ranks, even after looking through numerous books, but I know for a fact that it has 4 manuals. haha
There is a video of Stephen Tharp playing it. Posted by JV...(don't know the rest of his name)

That should be nice. Be sure to use the celests whenever necessary. They are so lush with the gamba. But you know what to do.
So - is this sucker digital, hybrid or all pipework?
