@RuneFinity44 That's probably only because what you said is wrong. Lithium gives away it's electron, and therefore does not "suck" on others electrons! Nice try though ;)
I get my lithium from button cells I buy at the dollar store (3/$1). Its really quite fun to do chemistry with it. Im also on Lithium Carbonate for my brain (900mg/day). This stuff is in my life every day, so its always fun to learn more about it.
BTW, it is useful to note that the Prof mentions burning lithium as being difficult to halt. The burning seen in the experiment is not the same thing; that is simply hydrogen generated in the reaction burning with oxygen. Lithium burning is very much the same as magnesium burning (the brilliant white in fireworks and military parachute flares) or aluminum (the shuttle SRB fuel, essentially).
I've been using your videos in my 8th grade physical science class. The kids really love them - and especially love The Professor. I admit - I love him too. He makes me want to go out and get some prescription safety goggle glasses to wear all the time. It's like The Professor is ready to do chemistry at any moment! I love your enthusiasm for what you do. It is contagious!
I love all of your videos, they are very informative and I've learned so much from them. You've inspired me to start my own blog of collecting elements, there's a slideshow about it on my channel.
@HardyBoyTyler74 Maybe he was referring to Lithium by...Evanescence if I recall correctly. No clue if that classifies as pop as I never listen to that kind of music.
And in Crystal Healing we can use minerals with a high lithium content in an energetic way to soothe excessive emotions by keeping stones like ambigonite or lepidolite close to our own energetic fields: we can wear them as pendants, keep it in our pockets..
That's funny, my teacher in my first chemistry course also mentioned Nirvanas song "Lithium" when he was talking about the compound ^^
I find this channel both entertaining and very interesting. I have an exam in chemistry in a couple of weeks, and additionally to studying with my books, I watch these videos that you guys make, just so that I can get that little extra ;) I'm hoping to see some more videos about organic molecules from you (I especially enjoyed the benzene-video). Thank you!
Thank you for these videos - I absolutely love them. I have a request for a video topic: can you ask Martyn to explain different kinds of elemental allotropes? I know he described some allotropes of phosphorous (red and white specifically), but I would be interested to learn about other exotic allotropes and their uses.
Nirvana also had a song called Lithium. Unfortunately, other extrenuating medical conditions can prevent a manic depressive from being able to use lithium as a mood balancing chemical. Enter the pseudoscience that is psychiatry and the fine art of figuring out while medivines have just the right side effects to treat a manic depressive.
I just have to say at school I had no interest in chemistry (I only liked space and physics, ha!) Since I subscribed to this channel I've found chemistry to become a real guilty pleasure. This said it may just be more mature thinking but I seriously think lecturers could learn a lot from these videos. Not the content but the format, all the school videos I watched where out-dated and treat you like a child, I would love to see these implemented in school!
@ScottRoseVideo Thanks for the kind words. We also think school students like videos which are not "made for students" but simply talk to everyone as equals.
@Xeidasx We have a professor in Brazil who does translations for us.... Anyone can turn off captions by using the button at the bottom right of the player.
The professor said "Cannot put out a Lithium fire." Would love to see them do experiments where they demonstrate this. Say put CO2 and other common fire fighting chemicals onto such a fire.
what causes it to react with water? Just it's properties? Or does it have to do with breaking hydrogen bonds and all that? (sleeping through high school chemistry was a mistake considering i enjoy the subject <_<)
@TheEchoesofMetroid It reacts with the oxygen in the water. He mention it will produce H2 as a bi-product. Its a simple single replacement reaction.
Li + H2O ----> Li2O and H2. (Lithium Oxide). It also reacts with Nitrogen gas in the air. It also with the water vapor or oxygen in the air, whichever has a high enough quantity to make the reaction go 100%.
@TheEchoesofMetroid: Lithium, like all alkalai metals, has one loose electron by itself in an outer shell. It wants badly to ionically bond to an acidic, like chlorine, fluorine, or in this case a hydroxyl ion. Badly enough to rip stable water apart to get to one. See the reactions below.
@puretroubleman that would probably entail some sort of explanation of galvanic cells which is kinda out of the scope of this video. but yeah, they should have at least mentioned it.
@myrmecophilous oh wait apparently it could also have been a song by evanescence. Well I'm just going to assume he meant nirvana because evanescence is such utter shit.
@Paxmax: Light, yes, but not very strong. For light strength use an aluminum alloy or for extreme hardness titanium (very hard to machine, but used as armor in airplanes, such as the A-10 warthog).
@puncheex Titanium is not any particularly hard, when it comes to armor the name of the game is shock resistance and being ductile. Many steel alloys totally rule this. The tradeoff for aircrafts is weight and that's one key element in favor for titanium.
Titanium nitride is a really hard substance but too brittle to be useful except for coating.
Yes, machining is a nightmare with small margins for error.
Was thinking of getting a Ti frame bike, but I went with carbon fiber, looks awesome.
@puncheex Oh... and who doesn't love the warthog!!! =o)
Spray some boxes of 50cal at it, shoot off half a wing and kill one engine and you'll still fly home! Not many aircrafts can take the punishment A-10 can withstand.
...and maul anything above surface you throw infront of it. Love at first sight!
@Smalas Isn't there also a Nirvana song called Lithium? Although it's more likely to be Evanescence's song because the professor said it was a pop song...

carlsoto1747 1 year ago
@carlsoto1747 thanks!
TheEchoesofMetroid 1 year ago
@carlsoto1747: Ummmm, I'm kind of doubtful about Lithium oxide. I think, rather, that the Lithium is joining with a hydroxyl ion:
2Li + 2H2O → 2LiOH + H2
The other equation should be
6Li + N2 → 2Li3N
which then reacts with water (violently) to yield ammonia, as the Prof mentions:
Li3N + 3 H2O → 3 LiOH + NH3
puncheex 1 year ago
@TheEchoesofMetroid: Lithium, like all alkalai metals, has one loose electron by itself in an outer shell. It wants badly to ionically bond to an acidic, like chlorine, fluorine, or in this case a hydroxyl ion. Badly enough to rip stable water apart to get to one. See the reactions below.
