What is it "IV-18"? All simple. Russian govement standart say: "I"-indicator; "V"-vacuum; "18"-number of model. Russian radicomponents can have 3 marks of quality:
1) rhomb(star) & number "9" - special "for use in space & rocket tehnicals" (very best)
2) rhomb(star) & number "5" - special "for military use" (best)
3) without marks - "for civilian use" (normal quality).
This kind of display was very popular during the 80s decade. Actually it's a vacuum tube, and was used everywhere at VCRs, HiFi, alarm clocks, but the new LED displays took over. Today you can see this kind of display in HiFi amplifiers, especially those which display many functions. They designed one tube for all (FM stereo, volume, balance, tuning etc).
Yes, but it has a great disadvantage also. Don't forget that it's a vacuum tube which -at least- at alarm clocks, fuctions 24 hours per day. The result is that by passing the years, this tube gets weaker, and the light of the display dimmer and dimmer, at a point that it turns to non visible at all.
True, but I have a pair of old Panasonic RC-95 clocks that have been running for at least 30 years. The displays are still very vibrant, to the point where I have to dim them at night. Otherwise they light up the entire room! If they are going to die out, I can certainly say I got my money's worth!

VFD is definitely the most beautiful display out there in my opinion. There is just nothing out there that can match the contrast like it. Great job.

Hum, this video was made during the test period (without external oscillator). I used a fake timing so, yes the speed isn't the real one.
