lol..You are too funny! I love the vid for the entertainment, even if I do not learn how to dig a well! Sorry, I'm da lady of the house trying to learn how to dig a well for myself.. We have one (15 yrs old) my uncles "installed"... This just showed up on the links in the right. We are new to YT so I'm just learning.. The "new experience" for you makes it funny, but informative..
@AseedofWisdom Yeah.. I'm thinking you might learn something from SustenanceNCovering that might help you.. You probably have enough "lessons from online etc" to use his firsthand knowledge and make it happen.. I bet you guys are friends already??? I dunno.. I'm just saying something is wrong here.. :D
@AseedofWisdom something is wrong here? what on earth are you talking about? the well point method and auger method are two completely different mways of accessing water one gives you a little water at a time the other (the auger method) gives an unlimited supply of water. if you only need a little water use a well point,if you need more,a well point wont work for you. anything else? ps.if youll notice.sustenance and covering has a video on my channel about well points.
@bctruck No, I didn't notice that he had a video on your channel. Like I said, only been on YT about 4 days, still lots to learn about how it works. I saw his video first, and just thought it might help. I so wish I had paid attention when my uncles did ours. Grr. I just know that I want another one to put a pitcher pump on, and would SO love to learn how to DIY :D Loved you vid, but am thinking I might just have to break down and ask them to come "install" another and pay attention this time.
@AseedofWisdom They surely installed the auger then for us?? I mean it is water for our house.. I'm just not sure what your definition of a lil' or a lot is.. lol I'm just wondering exactly what I need to research.. :D Think I should just ask them. :D
@AseedofWisdom if its water for you house,it isnt a well point. you would run out when filling the washing machine or taking a shower.perhaps you should do a little more reading and research on the subject before making any more comments. it really makes you look silly and misinformed.in this day and age, with information a click away, there is no excuse ignorance.
@asgfremont you do realiize i considered several differant methods of aquiring access to my water table? a well point would not have given me anywhere near enough gallons per minute. it would have definately been far easier than digging with an auger, but i wasnt going for easy,i was needing an adequate amount of water ,which the well point is not capable of.
I have been watching all the "drill your own well" video on you tube. I drilled down a 6" hole down 19 feet and hit water after hitting water i was only able to go 3-4 feet deeper because im into sand and the water washes the sand out of my auger so i cant lift any out . Do i need to go deeper for sustainable water (i understand quality may be poor)? if so how do i get the sand out? I was hoping for 30ft ( i have a scaffold and a mate!) thanks
@timorum my suggestion is to close in the sides of the auger with tin from a coffee can.this will help more of the sand to stay inthe auger while pulling it up out of the hole. i encountered the sam eproblem when i hit sand and dint think of doing this till i was finished with the project. the deeper you can get the hole into the water table the better.
I started digging today with the same setup you have. The first two feet were easy but I hit hard dry clay after that 'I'm in east texas' and quick progress screeched to a halt! I only got two hours in before dark and most of it was in the clay.I got five feet dug today am pretty happy with that I guess.Just will take me a few days at this rate however.
drill it using water to sink the pipe ,you just need pvc pipe and some rock to put in the bottom, you can use city water to sink the pcv! it works like this, have you ever seen someone take a hose and put it in the ground it goes down! the water makes the pcv go down
I noticed right before the part where you took your wife to go eat, you said that you may have to make a bucket to get the mud out of the hole, then the next day because it rained you got a trash pump, so even if it didnt rain when i go to make a well, would i still need the trash pump to get the water/mud out? Thanks.
@highcountrytimber that is correct. if the forcast had called for rain ,i would have taken more precautions to keeping the rain from washing out my hard earned hole.
For long term you may benifit from a much more expensive but nearly forever lasting stainless steel (sloted) well point. The big box stores and hardware stores stock screened well points that will not last and cause problems as time ticks on. If you want your well to last for every day use and emergency use get a sloted ss point. Instead of drilling your well you can also pound in your well point with a special pounder with lead to cushion the percusion. Look it up and do your reseaurch.
@Cessnacaptain i did tons of research before i decided to go with an auger to drill my well. its pvc caseing is nearly indestructable and lasts forever.im able to pump way more water then you could ever get from a well point.
This was great!! I have the same problem with the city charging too much for water/sewer. I'm drilling my own 20' well and had trouble pounding in a drive point.I didn't have a clue how to install an extension on the manual auger until I saw how you screwed the pipe into the auger point. I think I'll do mine with 1/2 in. pipe and a reducer to connect to the 3/4" auger point so as to reduce both cost and weight. Congratulation on a great project and THANKS for sharing it with us.Terry in Seattle.
I dug a well the same way with the auger and extensions....I got to 19 feet and hit a rocky, wet area , where I could'nt pull anymore out....so I dropped the point on 20 foot of pipe and drove it the last 4 feet....got good water.....It's hard work...I'm 50. I think the auger method is the best. Its not something you do everyday. Good vid.
I like what I see so far. I am in the planning stage of putting in a well. Why did you decide to go with a 8" well rather than a 2 or 3 inch well? I was thinking about using the water jet system to dig it out but I may want to do it your way...please advise.
@okbeeman i went with the 8 inch well because i need more water than a 3 or 4 inch well would provide. the water jet system would definately reguire fewer calories but not capable of going 8 inch wide using that sysyem. if you dont need but a few gallons a minute the the water jet system would be easier. let me know if i can answer any more questions. happy to help if i can.
@bctruck Thanks for the quick response! I was watching the Drill Your Own Water Well Part 1 - Drill Your Own Well Series on youtube. Have you seen it? what are your thoughts? This was what I was planning to do if I don't use your system. I have just over an acre that I want to water and if I succeed with this I want to put another one in close to the house with a hand pump. We are just off a river so I am hoping the water table is not too deep.
@okbeeman if you didnt need an enormous quantity of water all at once,i would certainly try the water jet method. it also depends greatly on your soil. if you have rocky soil then water jetting may be the only viable method considering the amount of effort it would take to relocate a hole if you hit a rock using my method. good luck and please keep me posted on your progress. knowledge is power and it pays to see what others are doing and how they did it. thanks for the sub by the way!
Great video series. Just curious did you ever consider the washing/jetting method? I am wondering why you decided digging with the auger was the best method for you. Also what type of grass is that you have?
@jafariushaverhill i did actually consider it. i did a lot of research and watched a couple of vids, but i decided that it wouldnt be feasable to jet a well that was 8 inchs wide. i would need way to much water and high pressure pumps.if i made a smaller well then i probably would have used that method.
@bctruck I"m considering digging a well this way. You're using a Seymour auger post hole digger I see, an adjustable one? Where did you get the extension bars from? Are they just some generic pipes?
@snake1993 Yes it is the adjustable auger. It goes from 6 to 8 inchs. Bought the 4 foot extensions and the connecting collars at a hardware store and they where all ready threaded. If you buy the auger just unscrew the handle and bring the auger portian with you to the hardware store to get the right size of extensions.

@ChrissibabyUK Guten tag! Iche Liebe deutchland!! I don't know why my video was recommended to you? Perhaps because I have a motorcycle video on my channel? Anyway thanks for watching.
cipmars give you a good idea. But you must count on possibility that in dry month you'll probably won't have any water in well. And, if you put some PVC drain tubes inside, it will be a lot more easier to pump out the mud collected inside than to drill another hole.
Hate to see your cave-ins, but I agree with you that you are going to be better off waiting until it drys out to dig it. I have the same problem with my city charging me 1.5 times the water rate for sewer even though I am not even hooked up! I have my own septic and no plans to hook up to it. They charge since it is "available". What a scam!
I wish that we had the option to dig a shallow well here. The water table is much deeper.
@jknacasual well i woke up this morning and rented a trash pump. it did exactly what i needed it to do. im actually finished with the well. tomorrow im pouring a small concrete apron around the casing and pump then ill upload vid of the finished product.
Fill it up and wait 'till it won't rain that much. When you get the new one ready get some PVC drain tubes and jam them down the hole. That will keep the well from caving in. That's the only solution I can think of.

Er, It may be a good idea to fill that hole.
Take at least ten good paces from the house and start again. (Stops foundations from cracking)

@nlo114 er,thats just ridiculous to think that an 8 inch hole will somehow cause a crack to appear in my slab.
