  • Wow 9 years after Loma Prieta and it was 4.0 here.

  • That's because the G.M. of WLS-TV went to KGO in 1998, and decided to bring the format that he established for ABC7 Chicago to San. Fran. to try to boost the ratings...it only lasted 2 years.

  • The Joe Ahern removed Pete Giddings from KGO for GMA's Spencer Christian around this time

  • That logo is way too similar to WABC's and WLS's logos.

  • no, it IS WABC's logo.

  • Uh, no. It's WLS'S Logo....WJLA uses WABC's logo.

  • no it's KABC's logo.

  • KABC's logo has a bigger circle 7.

  • right now they use the WABC logo, but back then in 1998, WJLA's logo looked like the Seven Network logo in Australia.

BTW, I am not from Australia

  • KGO, KABC, WABC, WLS and WXYZ were all ABC O and Os, now XYZ is owned by scripps. They all have been using the circle 7 logo scince the late 60s.

  • KGO was the first ABC O&O to attach the abc logo to the ABC7 Logo as early as 1996 before the other ABC O&O did it from 1997-1999 to separate itself from KATV in Arkansas and WXYZ.

  • @Dook6 WLS was the first to start using it in late 1995, which is when they re-branded from Eyewitness News to ABC7 News.

  • @ctmajka That's right. I remember now.

  • we're talking about where the ABC logo is positioned, and how big it is.. and I'm not talking about at this time. I was giving an example.

Right now they use the KABC-type logo with thew ABC down in the lower left portion of the "7", but here they used the WLS-type logo with the ABC being bigger and directly on the side of the logo.

  • along with KABC, it has a bigger circle 7 than KGO's in 1998

  • is KGO-TV a sister station to WLS-TV?

  • Sure is. Not only both ABC affiliates but also ABC Owned & Operated.

  • This music is way to Mega-Happy!

I miss the original "Cool Hand Luke" theme.

  • i think so too

also whenever i hear this music

it kinda reminds me of Chicago

cause I first heard it in WLS-TV

  • I notice in this clip that KGO had a similar ABC 7 logo to what WLS has in Chicago. At some point they changed it where the ABC logo is in the lower left corner of the 7 like KABC in Los Angeles.

  • KGO Changed it to the KABC Logo in 2003 right when Kevin Keeshan came in and Pete Wilson was starting his 2nd year at KGO.

  • I just thought about it, and you're right, Series I is definitely the bomb.

  • From what I've heard, the New Generation version's awful. I've heard it a few times, sounds awful to me. I prefer either Series I or Series III.

  • The open is just like the WPVI styled open, lol.

  • I don't think that WLS would get hurt any if they switched back to the "Happy People" opens, but still kept elements of their current Hothaus Graphics.

  • Hmmm...I can imagine that, actually - seems nice

  • KGO in 1985 has an open like this but with the Anchors faces included.

  • I believe KGO is now using the EWN package from Gari. (Too bad their CBS counterpart KPIX-5 has the EWN name)

  • I noticed that WLS had a more Thunderous sound in the beginning but KGO was much Mellower

  • Yes. WLS Uses both the Orchestral and Up-Beat versions of this piece. Whereas KGO only used the Up-Beat Version.

  • @sky1beam WLS uses two minorly different versions, this upbeat rendition for 11a, 4p and I think 5p. They use the "Thunderous" version at 6p and 10p.

  • It looks like KGO previously used the Circle 7 with the ABC logo like WLS in Chicago. Today, they have the ABC logo moved to the lower left side like KABC in LA.

  • Who is the annoucer of the KGO Edition of News Series 2000 plus

  • I'm not sure who the V/O is here, the NMSA says nothing about it, but he did a great job

  • Ron Rolland was on KPIX during News Series 2000 plus run on KGO. PS I wish KGO uses this theme again someday with the EWN signature

  • Yeah we knew that Ron was on KPIX. I don't think that's ever going to happen because KGO had a hard enough time being able to pay to use the WLS cut of 2000 plus. Imagine how hard it would be to keep up the payments for combo cuts of the two packages!

  • How much in the millions does it cost for a news package to be on a local Tv station

  • It doesn't cost millions -- for Top-10 markets it can cost in excess of $100,000 to license the music per year. For mid-to-small market stations, its considerably less.

  • Which makes me wonder how KGO could've been able to afford a SAM package after a Gari package considering SAM uses real instruments and Gari doesn't. Because of this, SAM's packages cost more than Gari's, yet they used Signature longer than they did News Series 2000 Plus.

  • Yeah, that is a good point -- KGO not only used Signature, they actually commissioned updates in [2003?] They wanted a more modern sound to Signature so they commissioned the traditional elements with guitar as well as adding several CDs to the package.

  • This is like the 1992 WLS open

  • Looks more like more like those WPVI style opens, without "Move Closer to Your World".

  • This is actualy a spiting image to WLS's open. WLS borrowed the Idea from WPVI in 1992, and KGO borrowed the idea from WLS in 1998 (using the same music & logo as WLS does)

  • Actually, WLS' general manager Joe Ahern came to KGO in 1998 and ironfisted the WLS set and look. They had just installed a new set and graphics done in house less than a year before. (search for the clip Abc 7 commercial 1998 to see that set)

  • Is he still there?

  • Joe Ahern returned to Chicago on WBBM
