Most emulations of the `tape sound´ focus on the saturation characteristic alone and underestimate the effect of a subtle amount of `flutter´ - high frequency fluctuations of the tape speed. This adds something which is probably the most important part of the special sound: The harmonic lines are "widened" by the effect of frequency modulation due to flutter which causes a 'thickening' of the audio signal contributing to the fat sound of analog,
this is the greatest piece of equipment i own. i hired a professional consultant to find the best equipment and this was first on his list. absolutley AMAAAAAAZING!!!!!!!!
@sorcerio Why mock your options? If you want this sound on your laptop, you can download this. If you want to have an impressive studio, maybe get the real thing...
There are definitely advantages to virtual devices...price, portability, options, accessibility, not having to deal with actual hardware, (space, power, hardware problems), as time goes on, emulations will get better and better.
...but we might agree, emulation seems pointless sometimes.
@musichopper i wish they would stop with 'warm sound' there is nothing warm about tape sound.warm comes
from even harmonic distortion and tape (unless the heads are very badly magnetised )gives you odd harmonic distortion mostly 3rd and there is nothing warm about that.all audio buffs hated the sound of vinyl and tape until digital came along, now all they do is cry for that analog sound!!
@hifijohn Speak for yourself.I grew up in the recording industry and i have met no one that hates analog tape etc.Stick your digital 1-k sounding crap up your ass. OLD records DO sound fuller/warmer and have more fidelity than a digital shit cd will ever have. And NEVER till me cds do not skip.LMFAO..And don't even get me started on headroom/digital remastering etc.FUCK DIGITAL,just use a tape machine and keep your heads well maintained and the unit calibrated.Your ears will love you for it.

Hmm a virtual emulation of a tape emulation device? If you want a real tape sound, why not just get tape?
