i do some traditional dancing myself and whenever people ask me what I thought about people 'modernizing'/westernizing traditional dance be it the dance itself or the music that is used for the dance, I always say "the only instance that it is permisible is when Micheal Jackson had done it!! aah the wonder that Micheal Jackson is. (was). *sad face*
Of course it's ODISSI-India's oldest classical dance. The technique of Odissi includes repeated use of the tribhangi, or thrice deflected posture, in which the body is bent in three places, approximating the shape of a helix. This posture and the characteristic shifting of the torso from side to side, make Odissi a difficult style to execute. When mastered, it is the epitome of fluid grace and has a distinctively lyrical quality that is very appealing....
@BahamaUncleLee , No !! Bharat Natyam is started from 4th A.D. Odissi is stared from 2/3 rd B.C or much older. BharatNatyam is started from Bhart Muni who wrote Natyasastram and the dance is name after Bharat Muni. In his Natya sastra Bharat Muni mention about Udra Magadhi ( Now Known Odissi) as a different style of classical dance. And Odiss is stated during the time of Kharavela the emperor of Kalinga ( Now Odisha).
Kharavela was emperor of kalinga during 2/3 BC. The history of Odissi dance has been traced to an early sculpture found in the Ranigumpha caves at Udaygiri(Odisha). dating to the 2nd century BC. Thus Odissi appears to be the oldest classical dance rooted in rituals and tradition. In fact, the NãtyaShãstra refers to Odra Magadhi as one of the vrittis and Odra refers to Odisha.
She is damn lucky!! She gets to dance with Micheal Jackson but I only get a chance to dance in the temple!! You are a very very lucky girl!! Ain't she?
@121Crystal but I only get a chance to dance in the temple!!
You don't consider that an honour? You really should -to dance before Jagganath? That is what the maharis did - and they held their heads up high because they got to see the face of the Lord of Puri
@michaeljacksonpyaar yeah she is lucky, but not in the way i think you think, shes lucky, coz so many famous odissi dancers and MJ picks her to feature in video, anyway more famous odissi dancers would have found it beneath them to get featured so little in the video :)
Michael was such a versatile dancer, and I love this video so much! He really tried to represent a lot of cultures and dance forms that weren't even known or "mainstream" at the time. I mss you MJ <3
