The guy should have bought you a burger with fries and everything. I quit helping due to exactly that reason with my Cherokee. Last guy I helped out barely thanked me and drove off without so much as even thinking of offering a dollar or Big Mac. I just won't risk my axles and trannys for people anymore. Past winter I passed a guy stuck in a van(Carpet cleaning outfit) like that, before he even asked I told him there were tow trucks available that were expert in pulling people out...
@Astrejim Just remember to be careful with it. Winches are USUALLY used to pull yourself out, or putting on another vehicle to help them get out. Even if it's rated for 12,000 lbs., doesn't mean you can pull that much with it, lol. But I'm sure you know that. Just remember, if it weighs as much as you or more, I guarantee it will pull you with it. Get some STEEL Wheel Chauks at your local autozone, they will dig into pavement, snow, ice and sand. And help so you don't pull your jeep in with them
lol. not ragging on ya, but do you even know what the rubicon is?
i live 40 minutes from the rubicon, and was up there this past weekend. got an older Sahara, ARB lockers front an back, 6'' spacers, 3.5'' lift, 10k lbs winch, 4:1 transfer case w/ 4.56 gears front and back.
went up to the snow this past winter, and was driving through powder 3 1/2 feet deep. that's where the fun begins :)
Yeah, that famous Rubicon trail. Challenge was to make a production vehicle that could conquer the famous Rubicon trail. So yeah...I know what it is. You win. Take a sucker from the bowl and get out.
@chrisfromoc You must be mistaken. The Rubicon trail is rated 18 out of 20 in difficulty and no way in hell can any stock 4x4 make it. You must have never done it before. I have never been to Moab but from what I have seen and herd the Rubicon has more difficult sections in it.
If you really want a challenging trail try out Fordice, it is just a bit harder than the Rubicon in some sections.
Cool vid! Got an '04 lifted Rubi myself! I pull for my own pleasure, nothing more. It's just plain fun! My Jeep sees a lot of action while at college in the winter, students getting stuck in ditches and snow banks left and right :-P Anyway, can't wait for another vid!
Do you have any vids of your rescue pulls? My Rubi is stock..including the multi-smashed windshield from numerous road stone. How many inches you lift your Rubi? What tires you running? Any required mods for your lift? Thx for the comments.
Nah, never seem to have the video camera with me when I'm pulling. Nearly all of my tows are random, I see people as I'm out driving and help 'em out. Next winter hopefully! My lift is pieced together (not a kit).. 4" OME coils front, 2.5" heavy-duty OME coils + .75" spacer rear, 1.25" body lift. Only *required* mods were adj. front track bar and a rear trackbar bracket, but I did do a MML as well to pre-empt vibes (no clue if I would have had them without it, it's possible I wouldn't have..)
Unfortunetley no. I don't have a recorder. But none the less, the rescues continue. Today my friend called me from a ditch. 20 minutes latter he wasn't in that ditch.
Is it really making that much of a diff? I love my I6...bullet proof. I would like to hear from new Jeep owners about the new 6. High rpm low torque makes no sense. But, I am open to hear from other Rubiconers. Love me Jeep. Even love the gazillion cracks in my windshield. haa haa.
Low Torque? Ever hear of google? it actually has more torque!!
Your I6 still dosent compare to a diesel but is a good engine yes, V6 is also a good engine with more HP and Torque. I drove both I6 and V6 and V6 is better all round even with 32"s instead of 30"s.
Its easy to bash when you don;t know anything... baaa
That's the problem. Hook onto the plastic bumpers and you rip em off. I had to get right underneath, go around the axle avoiding anything that looked sensitive. Most I just have to keep going cause they are all plastic and I don't want to rip a car in half. Good observation. No snow yet for this year in Vancouver for Rubicon Rescue II...stay tuned. Should be good when it happens.
I'm impressed. From my experience they are too light to do much pulling on snow. My friend about ripped the bumper off of an S-10 trying to pull it out of a long curvy driveway in the snow (he tried it slow at frist and just spun). I ended up getting in and idling in reverse all the way out. lol
Ticks me off! The only winter that I didn't have a Rubicon was this past winter, and Denver got SLAMMED!! Could have been me out there like that! Oh well, I've got one now, and can't wait to put her to the test with all the rescues of idiot drivers.
haa haa... modfiy you say? As in, make em so they work in 4 HI? I have seen the mod and fully plan on doing it AFTER the warranty runs out. Is that the MOD you are referring to. Love the Rubicon. Hate the flat windshield though...already cracked. Gotta get that fixed.
FJ Cruiser is very capable vehicle...single locker compared with Rubi's double-locker, double-Dana 44 bullet proof axles. If you are in Vancouver area, let's grab a coffee and go pull a few stuck mortals.
during the months of december and janururary, my truck (ford f250 super duty lariat 2006) with super swamper tires, gets a fair share of pulling people out. i usually ask them "what r u going to give me?" =] u guys r better offroad, my trux to big =( but i can pull like a motha *******!
What kinda headlight do u have on there looks pretty bright

I see by your comment that you have never had a REAL JEEP. I have an M38A1, made by Keiser/Frasier-Willys/Overland.

say man winches are for winchin not a tie down point for tuggin. Use the winch it will save your reverse gear. Just an idea.

You are right. After this, I started using the winch totally. Much easier and saves the trani. Didn't have much snow this year though...boo hoo!

Most trail capable production vehicle in the world definitley isnt the Jeep TJ.
Look overseas a bit, you'll find some much better trucks.
Don't get me wrong I love Jeeps, but they definitley aren't the best. The Central Europeans gots some sweet shit.

The rubicon trail is shit. Any stock 4by can make it. Head out to Moab in your rescue video and off the pavement and we'll see what it can do.

Just a helpfull hint: The reverse gear in cars is usually a lot more fragile than the forward gears. It is a rule of thumb never to pull backwards.

285/75R16 MTRs (33x11.20).. also 1.25" spidertrax wheel spacers in the front (was rubbing front lower control arm slightly at full lock)
Oh one more required mod: extended swaybar links (but you could run without them.. :-P)

you should rescue folks in a forward gear; reverse is the weakest gear and hardest on your tranny (even though it is the lowest).
