What is it? I think we get them in Scotland, but attractive insects are naturally harder to find than, for example, filthy houseflies and the usual boring stuff.

as I said, its common species in Poland so I would probably include it into our "usual boring stuff" ;)
Im not sure of the species name, but latin name of genus is Chrysoperla.
English name (and strict translation from polish), is goldeneyed fly (also lace-winged fly).
yeah we call them lacewings they are helpful for gardeners

Ive found plenty of these flying outside my window at night, is this the same species found in the UK?

i belive so.
its very common species in Poland, so probably in UK also.
