I also watched Paleocrates video, and I don't think you're answering the main dispute, and that is, Why are there so many variations of beliefs among Protestant's, all of whom say, "It is clearly found in scripture" ?
Second question, If I have my scriptural verses, in defense of my beliefs, and you have your scriptural verse to defend yours, how does one know who's correct?
@hockeyrulesus well the reason for so many denominations is actually partly the abandonement of Sola Scriptura (That is, it must be more than doctrine it must actually work itself out in practice) but also human sin, idols, and philosophies that creep in to our understanding of Scripture keep us from understanding the text correctly. No human, even the Pope in his best day, is able to put effects of the fall aside. Historically speaking, when Sola Scriptura was formally defined,.....
@hockeyrulesus ....the Protestant Churches were united and differed by liturgical differences (which are not explicitly prescribed in Scripture), but doctrine was united. You can examine the historical Protestant Creeds to see how close they were. Eventually, old idea and presuppositions that the Reformers broke away from (particularly the belief in "free will") re-emerged in Protestantism and that issue and its implications led to the initial splintering.
@hockeyrulesus ....It is worth noting, that those who have held to Sola Scriptura and practice Sola Scriptura are united in their faith....it is those who hold to it in word only but in practice insert foreign philosophies in their interpretation of Scripture begin to move away and break away.....you would say the same for a Sedavacantist in Rome maybe, or vice versa.....when someone isn't following the authority a dividing line is usually drawn (not sure which side of the line you fall on there
@hockeyrulesus ....of course, discerning all the groups and testing all their claims and examining them is just well beyond the scope of ones life, so it is often more convenient to just say "Protestantism shows that Sola Scriptura fails" but this just a convenient conclusion that is hardly demonstrable when Sola Scriptura is rightly defined, and rightly practiced.
@hockeyrulesus Second question, well the Bible has to be read as a whole and the context of each verse must be taken into consideration, etc...."proof texting" is not a very strong way to demonstrable why one believes something. I do not believe that the Bible has contradictory doctrines in it so I do not believe in pitting Scripture against Scripture. Therefore, the task of correct exegesis of the texts is crucial which must be done in the original languages of the Bible (Hebrew, Greek)...
@hockeyrulesus ....for instance, in Protestantism, the doctrine of Election and Predestination is often countered with verses that say "whosoever will"....the translated phrase "whosoever will 'is an indefinite relative pronoun that is not in the Greek text. The Greek literally reads "all the believing ones" so something like that might be solved by delving deeper into the text as inspired by the Spirit. But the Bible will never contradict itself.....
@hockeyrulesus ....another issue might be what I was talking about in the first question....people bringing foreign ideas into the Bible and then they use Scriptures to support their ideas. So basically, instead of the letting the text speak out what it says, they speak what their ideas are and make the Bible say the same thing. Hence, they "twist" Scripture as Peter himself said some men do in 2 Peter 3:16. But notice in that text, peter does not say the problem is the clarity of the Bible....
@hockeyrulesus ....rather, it is the heart of hte ones interpreting and handling the text....Hope that answers the questions....
I don't know how satisfying you will find those, but I am also trying to follow Sola Scriptura in revealing problems of Scriptural interpretation in the heart of man, and not for any lack in the clarity of the word of God.
