Noice, Briggs Vanguard engine, and I see you have what looks like an actual bike tranny. I want a tranny for my project but they are $1000+ that, and I thought they are made for engines running at 8000rpm or so, not 3600rpm, but still, very cool! :D
@doomsd46 The Sputhe tranny is 2300 and the same price as when I put the bike together and worth more than anything else on the bike. '8000rpm or so, not 3600?' Did you notice the 50 tooth rear sprocket?
@dueyftw - $2300? O_o Wow, definitely not putting one on my budget build, I can get a CVT Drive for $300. As for the gear ratio, there is an ad that no matter how many times I click the "X" it won't go away, and its hard to see some stuff. I don't usually do much with bikes, more of a Kart person, but I know that bikes usually have a belt that takes the power from the engine back to the Tranny with a small ratio (2:1), then after the tranny goes to the wheel with a slightly larger ratio (6:1).
@doomsd46 For 600 to 800 you can get a new 6 speed. Used 200 to 400 four speed. With a custom setup the most of the ratio's are out of your control. The front primary sprocket has 3 clevis pins to hook the steel Harley sprocket to the NAPA aluminum slotted doughnut. NAPA sells sprockets, v- belt pulleys and different size doughnuts that are welded for farmers. The rear sprocket will give your overall drive, cut from a blank. Any machine shop can do it. Trick is rear wheel aligns with front.

Not sure if I ever pointed it out, but might be handy to note, the engine I am using is a 400cc Industrial Wisconsin Engine. Its 50yrs old and has about 5 hrs on it only. Loads of torque, heavy though, 110lbs, but its cast iron.
As for NAPA, I have a strong belief in not using NAPA. I have seen too many cars with NAPA parts on them that won't run... : |
@doomsd46 Best thing is to find an old snowmobile and use the CVT out of it. Finding a new CVT that just bolts on will cost all most as much as four speed. As far as NAPA goes, I understand. They find junk from Japan, China, Korea and the USA to fill their shelf just as almost all the parts dealers do.
The NAPA farm gear catalog is little know by the public, their a good chance that the kid behind the counter has never heard of it. The quality is good, farmers have no time for junk.
@dueyftw - I got an Argo I have been meaning to dismantle cause the donkey that had it before me cracked the hull, bent the axles and let the drive chains rust and seize. Only thing that works is the engine, the CVT and the Tranny. I was thinking of trying that, otherwise I know a store near me that has a good CVT for $300. Might look into snowmobiles tho, in case worse comes to worse.
@doomsd46 Never had a problem with them. NAPA is just like any other auto parts store. The lower end stuff is usually crap from some country in Asia. If people use that instead of U.S. made parts and have problems then it is their fault, not NAPAs. You get what you pay for..

@greatwhitenorth112 18hp. Top speed is about 60mph. I have had this bike like this for about 18 years, first engine would do 76, clocked on a dyno. Second engine was put in 3 years ago, I think it got mess up from rust in the gas tank, never ran right. Bike was down for 6 years because I was, like you know, huh, broke. I think that this engine has a carb set up for dual fuel, I just need to figure out where to attach the propane tank.
