  • Theres some things there that really, really bothered methat you missed, such as bouncing off of 100 or so IPs. So some random hacker is going to have a botnet of 100 or so just to speak openly on an unencrypted network? Say it even is some other chat protocol, who wants to sit and wait for messages between 100 proxies? That's alot of latency!

  • When I watched this on TV a couple months ago, I couldn't stop laughing.

  • one you leave out is some not know the sys is be help over the phone on how to work it not know there being set up all the cops get what is type .........

  • TL;DR IRC can be fairly secure as long as you know it's setup properly and the server admins aren't monitoring your messages, having an IP address is mostly useless because of VPNs, proxys and such. Public channels can be logged, of course. 1337 $p34k is dumb and annoying often, but can be fun to use under the right circumstances.

  • Part 3.

5:00: Screenshots are just silly to do to text :) but I don't think it needed that much explaining :P

6:05: Again, you'd have to be in the channel, (which can be invite only etc) and two people wouldn't even need to be in a channel.

Most people on IRC would kick you out of their channel if you I annoy them :p

  • Part 2.

1:47: Sure that is a silly analogy, but you'd still have to find the boats. ;) Of course there's nothing to do with the crazy effects in the background...

2:35: If you're doing a /whois you already know what server you're on.

Ever heard of a proxy, vpn, or just using someone elses connection off their wifi? IP addresses don't mean much of anything, and that's also saying the irc server isn't masking their IP in the first place.

3:35: Actually agreed with you somewhere. Still fun to use

  • Part 1.

1:03: IRC servers are (when modern and setup properly) SSL linked (when using numerous servers), can connect with SSL encryption. They could just PRIVMSG to themselfs without joining a channel

1:47: Well of course it can, what can't? But ok.... again if they were using a PRIVMSG or even in a channel with nobody else there wouldn't be any logs other than their clients, unless the server was setup to (ussually just kids do this, real so called "hackers" would find a server they trust.)

  • everytime he pauses i expect to see "NOPE, just chuck testa!"

  • IRC members probably find this one the most hilariously wrong description about the IRC (the clip itself, not the commentary). Nice VB GUI interface btw.

  • lool . it's just an analogy for everyday people that aren't computer geeks, it doesn't need to be dissected even if its stupid to you...jesus wept...if u are more serious better use OTR (leverage socialist millionaire protocol) for f2f encrypted chat or SILC or w/e conference chat over 3rd party networks, verify babbleprint statically with prior gpg sigs ... BUT who the fuck cares to explain this, your are looking way to much into this... 'chemical residue on the boats??' 'logs on the boat??

  • The funniest thing must be "Can I get a screenshot?".

  • INCONCEIVABLE!!

  • well... they ARE sort of right about the IRC.

there are IRC servers that don't log anything (so you DO have to catch them in real time) and that don't allow /whois to show IP address (so you can't really track anyone).

  • What do you mean leet speak is for children? she can speak it and she obviously seems tech savy, I mean, I could NEVER take a screenshot of the IRC channel drugswap in real time over my VB GUI.

  • Could you also shed some light about a "Backtrace IP address" at 4:35? (In a higher-quality clip, you can see it at the header of the first visible column)

  • "Leetspeak"

    Used by children and idiots

You sir have made my day.

  • WHERE IS THAT VOICE COMING FROM? Oh, the video.

  • Hey, milw0rm's haktivism pages were entirely in leet.

  • Haha, I didn't even think about how broken the metaphor is until this vid mentioned it.

"Because as we all know, not a single ship has been intercepted for drug smuggling in the history of forever."

  • lol. crime show? you must be kidding me. comedy show is more like it

  • why are you explaining the joke

  • As has already been pointed out, IRC can easily be encrypted and otherwise secured. Additionally, you could have also pointed out that you can't just "set an alarm" to see if a certain person enters ANY IRC channel ANYWHERE - it's not a centralized system.

    Cool video though :)

  • @ariw2003net And why on earth wouldn't they be running their own IRC server to avoid the feds.

  • @esaedvik Haha, of course :p

  • Well "luckily I know leet" Is now a string in my vocabulary and the correct response "that's hot" is known by the people I chat with. Numb3rs taught me how to have a lot of fun :D

  • keep #math out of this fucking nerd

  • Touch my system and I'll eat your young? Who the hell talks like that?

  • It's for the drama. Like how in law shows like Harry's Law they ignore most of the rules of evidence, especially those against narration. A 40 second narrative is just more dramatic then 12 yes/no/who/what/how/when replies to 12 separate questions.

  • "Thieves cant" god what a supernerd.

  • @sublimeade Yep! And proud of it!

  • You can use encryption when you are talking on IRC!

  • @stalingbg

You can use encode your message with pgp keys, or you can require an encrypted tunnel on the server side, but that's not IRC, that's something plus IRC. (Which the show didn't mention)

  • hahaha i loled soo hard when i first heard them say "can we get a screenshot?"

  • XChat and Freenode sucks. You got to use irssi and EFnet to be considered clever :-)

  • Crocodile slaps numb3rs_dude around a bit with a large trout

  • "you got a screenshot?"

    *tap* *tap* *tap*

    "got it!"

lol, last time i checked i only had to tap 1 button to get a screenshot

  • @killer5054 tard =)

  • @killer5054 you are just a stupid commoner. Go die in a hole.

  • I hate your voice. You sound like a typical autistic computer nerd.

  • @Havermayer

and you're the typical idiot who can't comprehend interests and lifestyles unlike your own?

  • @Havermayer I am a computer nerd.

  • If you set up a private IRC server+ a Blowfish encryption Ftp server Tls/Ssl, then you can use a Proxy, Chainproxy, Or Bouncer, ?

  • Set up a private IRC server+Blowfish encryption, Ident to connect, bot to control woops ;)I

  • instead of commenting on the original video, ill jsut use this as a link ;)

  • Leetspeak: used primarily by children and idiots

    xD

  • I laughed my ass off when i first heard about the numbers description of irc. I'm glad to see a video which points out the fact that it's misleading. (though i would argue it's more insultingly misleading then dangerous) at any rate, the average idio-imeanum normal person takes shows like this for reality, and the internet suffers for it.

  • about your encryption comment, fish is very popular on irc and is a requirement for most site channels

  • Voice over is accurate and entertaining. Nice work.

  • leetspeek was actually used to get around filters.....

  • @whattheima lletspeek was actually used in CS to pwn n00bs

  • @whattheima

actually, you are wrong there. yes it can be used to get around filters but 1337 was first invented by CS players to p\/\/n n00bs.

  • CS didn't even exist at the time leetspeak came around...

  • @whattheima again, that's not actually true. you obviously haven't heard of cs16bit on nes-live. obviously. it was here that leet was invented.

  • @pr0pr0 What do you even think you're talking about?

I played CS when it was in 5.2 beta...

  • @whattheima but your probably thinking of CS3D, which was actually the 3rd cs to be released. Remember the 16bit one (kind of like doom?) on super nes live?

  • @pr0pr0 rofl, ofcourse...

  • @whattheima yeah, well that's where leetspeak came from. It was actually how you played the game. You input leet commands to move around and shoot.

  • brb making a GUI interface in visual basics

  • @PoringClawk

stay away from my IP address!

  • yeah, so now you know how so many Americans feel about the current Administration. Complete nonsense, but they know you're too dumb to know that it's complete BS.

  • but wait, why did they just use a GUI interface using visual basic to track the hackers IP address???

  • but she speaks leet guys so she has to be right...

  • ...and this is why i NEVER watch tv anymore! :( it haz suxxorz!

  • lmao man IRC is not for hackers.lol.its for FBI agents looking for PEDOs.

  • You didn't mention that the text appeared as it was being typed.

  • You are wrong in some things, server can log, but the most dont do logs, only client. The whois can have fake things IRC is used mostly for group conversations, in channels, but it is possible to have private chats.

There are many things very strange, the ips in the monitor, if it is a private server using a default port (6667) is not secure, got the trace of what? of many ips? u can have many ips, but use only one for the server, and the server shows what wants...

    BTW, primitive? LOL

  • I agree with you :)

  • Thats one of the more accurate videos, Actually NuBerz was correct (and yes i meant to say nube) was correct about one thing that being the default IRC-D Socket being 6667.

  • If I ever bother making a crime drama series, I'm DEFINITELY going to make sure it's ACCURATE with the facts, unlike this and CSI. (going on about the furry thing.... >_> damn stereotypes)

  • @Vash1036 Personal agenda much? Also, yiff in hell.

  • Come up with something less cliche, will ya?

  • Nice video man. And nice explanation. But you should also say why is irc used. This kind of shows scare people and i thnk that everybody should know that if you connect to a freenode server and join the #windows channel, at least, many of the people that annoy me every day can and will find an answer for their problems there. So theres also the helping people subject in the irc.

  • lol thanks, ive never used IRC and that just made me understand what my mates were laughing about,

    5/5

  • you don't know what you're missing, man!

  • this is actually not so correct

some IRC channels are private, does not keep records and are used by hackers (or, rather, scammers, who resell the data)

but yeah, when it's private, some random policeman can't access it

  • Comment removed

  • @runn1ng

It's not correct? What wasn't correct about it?

    - Some IRC channels are private, yet if you gain access you're in and able to:

    - Almost all channels don't keep records, bots or people do.

    - ANYONE can use IRC, regardless if it's or i/legal purposes.

    - No police man or anyone else can intercept the text without help from the network staff (unless they've been compromised) through private chat (not channel chat).

    - Check out Irssi for a good client.

  • Yea but the base backbone of IRC is set up in a way that anyone with half a brain can get into said chat and log the data.

There are MUCH better ways of speaking privately. The best is to simply NOT use the internet.

  • Comment removed

  • yes.

  • dude fuckin great, i saw this episode and i just laughed.

  • 1 h34rdz j00 sp34k 1337?

  • yeah but you dont

  • @hardkoregamer999 OMGZ a HACKER!!!! ;P

  • 1 12 1337 H4x0rz

  • Thank god I don't watch the drivel that the major networks consider "Cutting edge TV." I felt my IQ lower a few million points lower than it originally was to begin with.

  • Great video A+ would watch again.

Also, I think you should have mentionned that the text does not appear word-by-word with a beeping sound.. We always see that in those kind of shows and it looks incredibly stupid.

  • Can you imagine how real detectives feel about these shows?

  • They should of at least used a onion router to hide their true identity.

  • "private servers over SSL pipes or other encrypted connections. "?

Fuck you, they use undernet and rizon just like everybody else.

  • good luck finding a certain hacker on undernet: /nick randomshit666 ope, trace lost.

  • Heh.. you use x-chat on freenode.. that gives you a little cred right there. :-)

In reality, though, "hackers" such as warez groups *have* been known to use irc, but they use private servers over SSL pipes or other encrypted connections.

  • True, but it's an error of oversimplification... not of obfuscation. :D

  • Xchat-2 is the way to go if you're on Windows.

  • @tigercubkitten But don't use the official build, which is shareware. Use the silverex build of it. It has better Windows compatibility and brings it's own GTK and some nice additional features compiled in.

  • Yeah, that's what I meant. The Silverex build is labeled as X-Chat 2 on its site, but I suppose since the original X-Chat has been up to version 2 for a long time, there could be some confusion.

Thanks for pointing this out, pal.

  • @cstubing SSL and fish

  • @cstubing mate that is lame

  • @Chazzer131 what's lame? Your ambiguous statement is lame.

  • @cstubing Not really, well, the private thing. Many of the warez traders do use the regular networks, they're idiots yes, but meh. Some networks are crack down on such users, most just don't care because it uses a P2P exchange code.

  • @KittenKoder I don't know why so many people feel the need to correct me on this. Yes, there are public irc networks that are used to distribute warez to the public. So you know about these, congratulations.... They are public. There is an entire world of private servers that groups use themselves, and if you deny their existence, you simply don't know what you're talking about.

  • hascat is a douchebag for pointing it out.

He also doesn't sound like a douchebag, you're just to use to hearing ignorant people like the ones in this video to know a difference between an intelligent person and an idiot.

  • Thank you for clarifying that, now I can laugh at the joke!

  • Someone has not heard of SSL...

  • this video makes me laugh every time, lol :D

I also laughed so hard when they said, luckily i can speak leet, and they are even so dumb to have leet in there own show name, hhahaha

  • Those "lines" are called pipes.

  • @lonebard

I thought it was a series of tubes.

  • Technically, other than physical eavesdropping of someone's connection to the IRC server itself or something like that, how easy it is to eavesdrop or otherwise gather information on an IRC server depends on the context itself.

PMs and other such things, for example, are direct User1 -> Server -> User2, with no other users involved.

/whois only shows you what the server allows you to see, and I've been to servers which obscure identifying information, as well.

  • Obviously they were talking to each other (as the only two users) on #channel - the perfect destination for any super-secret meetings. :P
