we have them in Southern Cali also.... I had a tarantula hawk hit my car window driving 55 MHP sound like a rock hit my window.. when I pulled over the fracker was still alive...... SMH.....
That sounds awesome. I would love to see those things in my yard. I might even want to save a T's life and make it a pet. Do you know what kind of T's you have there locally living in your yard?
so lemme get this straight. the wasp bugs the shit out of the tarantula until the tarantula fights back, then the wasp impregnates it... why not just do a fly by hit and run to avoid unpleasentries?
I suppose if you don't wear a Spider Man suite for a fancy dress party this guy will leave you alone. Interesting video and I would be checking my shoes each time I went to put them on for spiders if I lived where you are.
The tarantula hawk is such a cool insect but I live in the UK and if I walked down my front path to see a tarantula I would get the biggest knife I can find and end it lol.
I was driving through death valley and i pulled over and think i ran over one of these wasp's holes cos before i knew it there were about 3 of these flying around me. Got in the car drove about half a mile and they were still following me, horrible things.
I watched on a programme, where the hawk wasp paralyses the tarantula, and then lays its lavae in it, and the tarantula is then eaten alive by the lavae, this is so the lavae can eat fresh meat, brutal stuff.
These guys are like "It's cool, huge ass spider outside my house having a battle with a bug which gives one of the most painful stings on the planet" xD
Spiders are way more badass, wasps are like the skinny white kid who thinks there though but can only kick your ass because he rolls around with 5 other dudes.
@Zhangnitzu lol...i have about 25+ T holes in my front yard...and have about 3-5 T-Hawk Wasps roam around daily. As long as you don't mess with them...they totally ignore you! Disadvantages of living in South Texas?
@bigpapaernest What city in South Texas are you from? I grew up in South Texas and I've never seen one of those things. Not saying I wanna see one. ha ha!
@whatrugonnadocrazy Those wasps dont hunt in swarms...they are independent and will fight EACH other for their Ts. As for the Ts...well we just learned to live with them..they spook me when they come into the garage though! ;o)
I saw a t hawk. Those things look fuckin scary! Id never even heard of them before so you can imagine how shocked i was. I was only wearing board shorts too and it landed right next to me :-O
@binweevilsjackpp5 i am thinking that the wasp had already stung the T by the time i got my camera which might be the reason it didn't react in defense.
@bigpapaernest yes, for sure... the spider was already poisoned even if at low dose of venom (it can still move and finally try to escape), the wasp inject an initial dose of venom so when the spider is kept safe injects eggs
@binweevilsjackpp5 The wasp is armored with a slick chitin exoskeleton. Biologists have heard the desperate scrabble of tarantula fangs trying to gain purchase on that slick surface. The spider is soft all over and vulnerable to the wasp's fast-acting neurotoxin. The spider has to turn its whole body to bite whereas the wasp has a flexible dagger. I think the spider's threat display is acknowledgment of its grave peril.
@binweevilsjackpp5 those wasps are like a mongoose to a cobra, u wouldnt think it would win but they beat on the tarantula pretty easily. Evoloutions just made tarantulas that wasps prey for laying its eggs in so the tarantula doesnt normally win i guess lol, the wasps get 1 sting in and its over
@secretgeekyaccount its kinda weird, but they dont attack us. I have NEVER heard of a T Wasp biting someone down here. They are looking for the Ts and will fly around us.
@bigpapaernest They hunt Tarantulas, I think. And they're apparently not aggressive towards humans, and it takes a lot of provocation to actually get one to sting you, considerably less than, say, a bee.
If i would seen something like that it would be like STOMP KICK!!STOMP KICK!!STOMP KICK!!STOMP KICK!!STOMP KICK!!STOMP KICK!!STOMP KICK!! Until my foot would fell off:)
What these guys do is they paralyze the Tarantula with a potent sting. They then drag them back to their hideout, paralyzed and then lays it's eggs on it.
