This is a shining moment in the history of dance and of cinema - the way their relationship is capsulized into one perfect dance sequence, the flow of it, the beauty, the heartbreak...my favorite number from my favorite Fred & Ginger film. Abiding thanks to whoever made it available here!!!
If someone says they don't understand the way people broke into song and dance in musicals tell them it was a way of expressing feelings that couldn't be conveyed by simple dialogue. Tell them it's similar to animated programs like ''The Simpsons'' whose characters say things unacceptable from live actors. Musical numbers are devices to move plots forward.
This is the reason they are the best. Always will be.
The RKO story, Fred and Ginger details the difficulty they had doing this scene, MANY takes, Fred's toupee flew off in one. Ginger's feet bled. We will never see the likes of them again.
The director was George Stevens, one of the widely-considered three greatest american directors, along with John Ford and Howard Hawks.
This is by far my favorite number of all Fred and Ginger ever did. It's pure movie magic, and yes, the gown is absolutely stunning, as is Ginger herself.
One of the great A-R duets, which one documentary actually said may have been their most difficult to film. I can see why, for 2 reasons: the number is of them actually breaking up, and it was shot on 2 levels and contrary to what is assumed, was NOT filmed in one continuous take (the shot changes @ 6:19, but shows a stunning climax of Rogers in dramatic twirls in and out of Astaire's arms, no doubt the moment her feet began bleeding). as the re-shoots rounded past 40 takes. Incredible stuff.
@ciroalb3 I was quoting both TCM and dance critic Arlene Croce's book on the A-R partnership. She wrote thus: "Toward the end of "Never Gonna Dance," (director George Stevens) attempts a daring crane shot, but then cuts to a stationary angle at the top of the stairs. It may have been one of the few Astaire-Rogers dances that *couldn't* be filmed entirely in one continuous shot, for its climax, a spine-chilling series of turns by Rogers, took over forty takes to accomplish."
it took them 47 takes to shoot this, and on the last take they got it right, even though ginger's feet were bleeding through her shoes, but she didnt notice. now THAT is dedication....
When they filmed this Ginger Rodgers feet were hurting so bad they were bleeding all over the floor and she couldn't dance in heels after this for a few weeks just shows how amazing they were to do it anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#iloveFredAstaireandGingerRodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This incredible!!!!!!!!!!!! The director wanted to take a few different scenes of the dance up the stairs but Ginger refused she said it would look like they weren't doing it themselves so the did it in one scene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) In a rehearsal her shoe flew off and Fred in the face :( I am sure she felt horrible
This is simply a masterpiece which by all accounts took 47 takes to get right and made Gingers feet bleed - if anyone doesn't understand who the "wolf" is in the song, it's the wolf at the door during the depression and Fred has at least been left his feet and the "La Belle Romance"
Does anyone else notice that they're both in tears during this song, but they're the most subtle, believable and best acted tears you're ever likely to see? What's acting in Hollywood come to? The golden era is kicking it's butt.
This number "Never Gonne Dance" took 48 takes. Ginger's feet were bleeding, but she said, I don't want to quit. Let's get it over. They wrapped her feet and her and Fred continued until is was finished. When it was done everyone cheered. It was around 4:00 am when they finished it.
@Rtmax45 I'm not surprised. Although it looks glamorous I don't think many people realise how much musical stars of the 30s, 40s and 50s really suffered for their art. They had seriously talented skills but it wasn't an easy life and this sort of hardship was a regular thing. This is why we need to keep showing their clips... otherwise they will get forgotten with time and that would be a great shame considering all the blood, sweat and tears they went through to entertain millions.
@shufflehop I agree. I got my information from Ginger's AutoBio. Check my video on when Debbie Reynolds was found crying under a piano and who found her.
Her gown is the most beautiful gown ever. So elegant and shimmering. I'd love to wear a gown like that.
